Why no Mortal Kombat MU?
-
With MK 11 arriving very soon I'm once again wondering why there has never been a pure Mortal Kombat MU? I think the setting is ripe for it, especially if you do it post Outworld invasion of Earth. You've got ninjas, cyborgs, cyborg ninjas, gods, lizardmen, and whatever the hell else. Just seems like a setting ripe for RP. Has it ever been attempted? Just curious what others think.
-
I could have sworn there was one. In the 00sish?
-
I'd honestly play the hell out of it. You might have to hyper detail the combat system (and perhaps even automate it) though since that would be the point.
-
I honestly think automated combat systems can be hella-fun if done right. It's one of the things I miss from my old Transformers MU days. I wonder if it'd be difficult to do up a MU version of the old Street Fighter RPG...

There's the cross-fighting-game-theme Match of the Millenium MUCK: http://motm.kicks-ass.net/

@mietze There was one. You might say it suffered a Fatality.

A MK MU would be both the best and worst game for players who don't like character death:
Plus Side: Your character could be shot 18 times, lose 6 gallons of blood, 3 spinal fractures, their skull imploded, 32 separate 3rd degree burns, and have their skull imploded again...and not only still win, but celebrate it by doing a backflip and dapping.
Downside: Losing a match contains everything above minus the victory part, then add in: Having your testicals telekinetically ripped out, filled with mercury and frozen, shot like bullets into your eye sockets, and then you are uppercutted into an inescapable pit of razor sharp spikes where you die die. Dead die. Total die.

https://kombatmud.com this is the one mentioned from the 2000's. It's still up for old players who want to go down memory lane. It isn't currently being actively developed.
Combat is nothing special though, just the typical Diku style.

You'd have to write the kombat system (lol) so it's more forgiving than a match in the video game, with the fatalities coming into play for pressing your luck too hard, and the forgiveness of Nether Realm to bring you back from the dead if you found a patron like Quan Chi or another sorcerer.
That means a coded martial arts culture of risk-commitment that would be binding and non-consensual once you've made the decision to let it ride (a bonus for exposing one's self to harm, a second chance once wounded, and level selection where you'd be placing both characters in harm's way in exchange for certain coded advantages), various classes of character related to the worlds (Earth Realm protectors having some degree of prescience between realms, Outworld horror gore genetic engineering, cybernetic repairs that would alter your character, sorcerers that could return you from Nether Realm, and Elder Gods that could play with fates), and a function of the game to character redesign via acts of fate.

And outlaw hard C's.
It's not coded; it's koded.

Bonus points if the wiki domain is something like:

Because everyone would complain how OP Sub-Zero is and that player gets all the wins and is in all the stories and games.

But there is more than one "Sub-Zero" as he was part of a clan of Ice Users. So.. Everyone could be OP.

That could be misinterpreted in some areas, where 'ice' is slang for crystal meth.

I like the idea of a stable of all-Douchebag Johnny Cage approved movie martial artists with sponsorships.
