So I won this trip to go surprise my mom for mother's day. I've been working with my dad to keep the surprise intact and to organize things on her end.

The plan had been that I land around 2:30, I'd stop off at my hotel, then meet them somewhere around 4 for an early dinner. Perfect.

...in classic fashion my dad pulled his bullshit. Calls me to say that he's decided he'll be taking her to a late lunch today and they probably won't be ready for dinner until 8pm or so.

Cool.
Awesome.
Don't know why I woke up at 4am for an early ass flight to maximize my time or anything.

I'm gonna try to make up for it by swinging by too see my grandparents, but goddamnit. I hate how he does this. When they came to TX a couple years ago to visit me, they were supposed to pick me up for dinner....and called about two hours before they were supposed to arrive to say oh, we decided to spend longer in Dallas. We'll just head to your apartment tonight and be there sometime after midnight.

I just can't ever voice this fact because he'll go in about how I'm whining and making a big deal out of 'nothing' or I'm being selfish... He puts his kids (and often his wife because he has done this sort of thing to my mother before, too) last and if we ever show how much it hurts us, we're the selfish ones.

I just keep telling myself this trip is for my mom. This will make her happy and mean a lot to her.

OMFG printer, I don't need multiple places to feed you from unless one of those supports a roll. I can't even afford that shit and you don't print 'roll big', so don't even play. I don't think you do roll. Stahppit.

And who did you think you were foolin' with that USB cable. That thing isn't even as long as my t-rex arm. It would not even reach all the way across the back of the printer itself to reach the other side, come on now.

If this is what we're going through with the printer, I dare not imagine what will happen with the scanner. OH WELL NOT LIKE WE HAVE ROOM FOR IT NOW THOUGH I GUESS. <mutter-mutter> taking up half a goddamned desk are you serious <mutter-mutter>

I remember when 'new tech day' was not a comedy of (t)errors, I really do.

It is admittedly a thing. Though it's a different thing for someone fundamentally selfish, someone who is a workaholic, someone who is fundamentally lazy, etc. It can go a lot of ways.

Still, having worked from home for at least a decade and a half now... very much a thing. You'll run into different problems with someone who is 'complete this task'-oriented vs. someone who is 'I'll get to it in my own damned time!'-oriented and... the list kinda scrolls on and on, but once you live with that for a long enough while, you either develop reliable means of working with people with schedules determined by someone else to plan around their available time, or you become a flaky jackass.

The amount of flaky jackass going on there is just not remotely OK.

My hubby has worked from home as a software developer for over 20 years, and yet is not an asshole incapable of respecting time or deadlines with people, whether he's working with them or not. So. My vote is just being selfish and used to being selfish.

My internet has been unreliable to the point of non-use all weekend. In typical First World Fashion, I am seriously upset about this and it feels like the end of the world; I'm going to have to go back to work tomorrow and feel like my weekend was a waste, because I didn't get to do much of what I wanted to do at all.

Coming to the increasingly annoying realization that I have finally reached that point in my life in which I can't get away without getting a decent screen-printer-scanner-etc. calibration dohickey and software. Which aren't necessarily super duper expensive, but sure as shit aren't cheap.

I swear they overcomplicate this shit just to sell more products some days. (And now, in honor of Mother's Day, I sound just like my mother. Oh gods... )

Honestly, I'd recommend just getting a used DataColor Spyder from a generation or two ago. They keep coming out with new ones with Shiny Glitzy Features, but those Shiny Glitzy Features aren't actually really that useful in many cases. I've still got a Spyder 3 Pro (they got up to 5 and then put out the SpyderX) and it works perfectly well to calibrate things for the purposes of my photography work.

I did the Spyder -> Spyder 2 -> Spyder 3 Pro upgrade jumps, and then realized I wasn't actually getting any benefit from the new features; I've felt no burning need to upgrade since, and the 3 Pro still works perfectly well for me. But the people who do keep riding the continual upgrade cycle on those keep selling off the old ones as they jump to the next.

The SpyderX costs $270; a used Spyder 3 Pro can be found for $80-90.

@Sparks That is very, very good to know. I've been able to get away without needing anything for ages since everything I was doing was purely digital, but... print. And all the changes that come from 'have not really bothered to do anything print for over a decade'.

The last time I printed anything was pre-2010, and back then I had a tower and one of those crazy 30inch apple monitors I managed to pick up when they started to slash the prices on them. WAY different from a retina display when it comes to matching anything.

There's also not... terribly intuitive tools available to handle it on the iMac. Even the 'extended setup' for their color profile tool is, uh. Wanting. My color vision is pretty dang good, but the color balancing portion is the furthest thing from easy or intuitive ever. Also, hell with a trackball and the tiny space and tiny increments I'd be shoving it around!

At least I feel better hearing that it isn't just me, and things are getting absurdly overly glitzbombed to some extent.

Seriously, when doing color work on the laptop, even a tiny angle adjustment can make it look a different color. I never know what color a thing actually is anymore. With the matte screens, I didn't have to worry about that.

I can't even find these as a custom order thing anymore.

RIGHT? I do not understand why Apple discontinued those; the 'you can get a matte screen' option was one of the best features of the MacBook Pro line some years back.

That said, Acer, HP, and Samsung do all have a few matte monitors they still make. They're just harder to track down because they're not often listed explicitly as matte on their order pages anywhere.
