How to use Potato MU Client
-
@skew I'm giving it another try and see if I can just get used to it. If I had my choice I wish it didn't do that, but it seems silly to have that be the cause of my dismissal of the client, because otherwise it seems to be a perfectly good client that is a good replacement for my old school SimpleMu.

@Ruggles is reporting the above simply does not work on PennMUSH. Is anyone out there playing a PennMUSH game that could check?
The
[/get 0]
is what seems to be failing. If you set up the above to just sendsay [/get 0]
it should work. Though now that I type I do hope ol' Ruggles was using a zero and not a letter!This is happening in windows 64bit. It doesn't matter what the server type is. That is the part that is purely handled by the client before it sends it to the MUSH. Basically there is some kind of bug. I ran my client as administrator and it still won't do this. Course I'm trying to log to a drive that is not the main OS drive (potato isn't on the OS drive either) so that might have something to do with it if this isn't a widespread bug. Who knows.

I'm still unsure what this is supposed to do exactly?
More specifically -- get takes some predefined variable that you've set on the game (or set through /set) and recalls it. What is variable 0 here? When was it set? It's not one that has a predefined meaning in Potato.

Got a new laptop. Win10, like the old one. Installed Potato. I'm getting the same Potato-yoinks-focus issue that was discussed on page one.
Help. ;__;

@Rinel I have no idea what I did that stopped mine from doing that. If I find out, I'll let you know.

@Rinel Hate to be "that guy"... but you might want to just move to Beip.
https://musoapbox.net/topic/2676/how-to-beipmu-the-best-mu-client-for-windows
It has all the features of Potato, and then some. Most importantly it's actively developed and has great support.

I might check it out. Strangely enough, the Potato issue resolved itself. Or something. It's no longer happening.

Arggh. New laptop in hand, trying to set up Potato. I've used the above code, set it to 'regexp' instead of wildcard, have "Continue?" checked, along with "Omit from Display" and "Spawn" set so that it should be spawning to a new window just called Pages.
It is not.
Help??

I managed to fix it. For reference for anyone setting this up in the future, all I did was remove the $ at the end of the line, which seems to have been the issue.

Yeah, Potato pretty much gets that anything you put in that box is going to be a regex, so signifying that it's the beginning and end of a regex isn't entirely necessary and could break stuff, IIRC.

So, asking for some folks here.
Does anyone out there know how to make Potato work with MUD prompts? It should, in theory. When setting up a world, it has a toggle between MUSH/MUD. I know.
So: any workarounds/thoughts?

Plz help.
I did a fresh install of Windows 10 on my desktop.
Everything is gucci.Except.
Except.If I minimize Potato and there's new activity, it pops back up. The issue is with Windows, but I'm asking here since it only affects Potato. I've tried numerous things. 'New' install of Potato (I initially just copied over my settings). Running as admin. Changing around the alert settings. I uninstalled the 'Xbox' center since a friend said that'd done weird things to their window-focus on their machine.
For now I'm gonna try Beip despite my discomfort with its GUI (just can't get comfortable with it, it's a me-thing), but if anyone has encountered this and knows WHY IT DOES IT... plz for the love of god let me know.

@Auspice
From talvo:Hey - I'm the developer of Potato, someone has just pointed me to your post. Development is (more than) a little lagging at the moment, as istarian mentioned, alas... But I'm still moderately active, if not actively updating and releasing atm.
The reason for the behaviour you're seeing is a missing library. On Windows, it's due to a missing .dll from the MSVC++ Redistributable that's needed (I used to know exactly which, but unfortunately lost that during a computer change; if I ever get it nailed down again, I'll distribute it, or at least make it available for download directly...). On *nix there's a small C file included with Potato that it'll try and compile at runtime, but this has some dependancies, which are documented on the wiki/in helpfiles.
When the library is missing, it falls back on a behaviour that used to, in many cases, flash the window, but in all modern cases seems to just maximise the window/bring it to the front; ideally I need to remove this as a fallback, now, as it's more disruptive than helpful...

Is Potato client being maintained for new Mac releases?

It hasn't worked properly on Mac in a long time.

I have zero answers in this thread. Mike (Potato Client developer) is regularly on PennMUSH (which he also helps develop) : pennmush.org:4201 . Someone there may have answers if there are more questions on Potato as relates to MAC and/or its developments.

The only way I could get it to work properly on macOS is by replacing the hopelessly out of date system TK bundle with something up to date, such as ActiveTK (which I believe is still free for development use), then downloading the UNIX source for Potato (not the Mac binary) and running the script manually. It works but it's a PITA. You'll probably be better off switching to Atlantis.
