are there any comic places that are good
and not year one everything potpourri mashup where everything is flavorless and just a giant bland gray glop
and, like
also they have players
and the players do stuff w people they haven't known for a decade
(prob im asking too much i know)
-
@Prototart Waiting for this myself
-
I hear people say Empire State Heroes is good.
-
@GreenFlashlight It's still a DC/Marvel/Indie mash-up game with OC's.
Also, I have an issue with their banned/restricted list; Hulk, Thor, and Wonder Woman are okay, but no Kryptonians. I understand and realize that Kryptonians are a PITA from a power balance and Staffing perspective, but to just outright ban the iconic superhero instead of figuring out how to make him work in the setting is just a bad ruling, IMO.
-
i don't object to mashup on a like fundamental level just it usually becomes this confused boring mess of everything blended together w nothing that made the originals interesting
Like, i still like my marvel/wildstorm shit that will never be used
-
@Prototart I agree with you. But, I also have the opinion that because the power levels are so disparate, with DC being literally magnitudes of order greater than Marvel, it makes combining the two main universes and maintaining some kind of equity/balance a challenge.
Better to just do an OC universe from scratch and allow the occasional homage/expy character.
-
@Runescryer So it's not the OC part you dislike, it's mashup, right? So you're looking for something more single universe flavor?
-
That's what I would be into. The mashups are blah. I agree. Ideal would be just one universe with a strict canon around like for example MCU and not just anything marvel at anytime!!!! Or OCs only. I would be down for one of those. All the OC ones I've played on have been meh at best, though.
-
@Macha Pretty much. Either strictly Marvel, strictly DC, or strictly Original.
The other issue with going Marvel or DC is character history/interpretations. You're confined in what you can do with the character; if you go in a different direction, you can make the character less desirable to app for future players, or they have to ret-con your playing tenure, or lots of other dicey propositions.
With an OC, it's your character so do what you want.

yeah people are always all bUt NoOnE lIkEs ThOsE but idk they used to have a hundred logins when the mashups had like 20, so ive never bought it i think they're just harder bc you can't just go "yah it's everything :3" as your theme

ps for the inevitable "why don't you make one then" i tried and it was v little red hen, like i asked everyone to help me make bread and they were just "oh wow i love bread hmu when it's done" but like little red hen doesn't have an oven so she just went to drink straight chartreuse and watch zombie movies in her underwear

Yup, this adequately describes my experience attempting getting a game going. Sometimes a staff team comes together and sometimes it just doesn't happen, or people flake, or any number of things. So I feel you dude.

Did you not watch the past 50 years of zombie/low grade horror. This is just the situation zombies (insert title monster) wait for to attack. Lucky you survived to tell about it.

The New Gods are better than the Asgardians, so I feel your pain.

If I were adding to a comic/superhero wishlist, I'd love to see a game that was willing to make (and let players make, through TPs) consequential changes to the world/game over time. It's difficult to care about the stakes of something when you know that the initial status quo must always be maintained--and I say that with the acknowledgment that a recognizable world is key to bringing in new players.

I feel you on that one. The static nature of superhero comics and superhero MUs are both frustrating to me, as a life-long fan of the genre.
Which is why books like the Authority and Hickman's current X-Men ...thing... (it's not a reboot or a refresh, more like a reframing) and RPGs like Aberrant get me excited. Same old, same old is harder to work up the enthusiasm for.

the intent w marvelstorm was like
basically it existed bc Secret Wars had started and nobody had realized it, there was an incursion before the Wakanda one & it was with Wildstorm Earth, and Void, Majestic and The Doctor managed to, like, hammer the universes together and only they knew it's happened at all
i had/somewhere have idk like, 20+ pages laying out how stuff fit together like SHIELD was just NATO & Stormwatch was UN formed bc SHIELD was overtly American Interests, I/O was a CIA workgroup that took over p much the entire domestic intelligence apparatus like in The Wild Storm, Kherans were like the alpha release for Eternals and the Celestials abandoned them but they still went around Cuckooing worlds, etc etc etc
but Secret Wars was still all happening and we wanted an Illuminati to form and like eventually we were gonna do a Battleworld thing and allow some, like, very highly curated don't-expect-yes-to-A-list other-media chars as Hyperion-like survivors of other universes and etc once people caught on
-
^ that's like idk 2/3rds? of it if anybody really wants to read a bunch of dumb fanfic world building whatever that me and @Phase-Face did
-
@Prototart I would love to see an updated version of this using The Wild Storm...
-
@fatefan
I've seriously considered it since Wild Storm finished but WS is a LOT harder to fit in, like, basically to the public it just was our world until Engineer turned up
