Tablet keyboard
-
I don't recall if we have an existing thread for this but... does anyone have a tablet keyboard to recommend?
Sometimes I want to play from my recliner in the living room my gaming laptop is too heavy for it. My 10' tablet would do the trick well enough but typing is annoying as hell, so I'd rather use a physical keyboard for that... but Amazon is full of weird unknown chinese-branded products full of reviews that might or not have been written by actual people.
Does anyone have experience using such a setup? If so do you have any recommendations for a tablet keyboard?

The only keyboard I have for my tablet is for pure show Cause I'm that big of a geek.
-
Ugh so I had a case w/keyboard for my iPad because fuck yes I'm a writer and I can whip this shit out an-
that motherfucker stopped charging after a month. And I guess that's because I bought a $30 model instead of shelling out for one of the $50+ ones.
So I just bought a basic case for my tablet and I'm using a cheap (it doesn't do the trick lesbehonest) stylus and the Moleskine app for notetaking now while considering getting myself an Apple Pencil for Crimmas.
But if you find a good keyboard, @Arkandel, let a gal know.
-
So I asked my son what keyboard he bought for his tablet and he uses this one it survived a 16 year old. So... YMMV
Edit: He earned the money so he could pay for it. So, yeah. I'd have never bought it for him.

@Auspice lol. He works at my SO's tattoo parlor scheduling appointments and collecting monies. So if he wants to spend it on stupid stuff. I'll let him.
-
@Auspice For iPad, the Apple Magic Keyboard works. Works on iPhone, too. They aren't cheap, but I use mine for both desktops, then pack it up to take with me on the rare occasions I need to type much from 'somewhere other than my desk' and there's not even a need to briefly retrain the fingers to an alternate keyboard scale.
ETA: hooooooooly crap, they're still way cheaper than that logitech.
-
@surreality Alas, my tablet's android. I guess bluetooth would still work anyway but eww, Apple stuff in my house?
-
@Arkandel Could we please give the OS wank back to the 90s? Seriously, it is not cute or endearing, and is possibly the most useless form of negativity possible in the day and age. It graduated from 'tiresome', got a Masters in 'eyeroll fodder', and went on to become Dr. Don't Do That somewhere in the 00s.
-
@surreality Geez. Okay, sure.
-
@Arkandel Probably an apple user.
Not to derail the thread, but you, me and others work in IT. The OS wars are alive and well on a variety of fronts.
I think with a tabelt/keyboard setup the problem is going to be how you keep it on your lap. I have a tablet PC for work and it's basically impossible to use without a desk/table unless you're using it as a touch screen.

eh.
I work in IT. About half of us have windows machines, half have Apple.
My developer friends who I game/chat with have pretty much exclusively switched to Apple for development and prefer it for that environment, but game on Windows. -
To be fair some of the hate on Apple is due to the way Apple presents themselves and isolates themselves from the main stream. A prime example of this is that Apple has gone out of its way to make sure that gaming on a Mac is a less than full-filling endeavor. This is not to say that I have a hate for Apple or anything, just that they've done enough marketing to encourage this OS war stupidity. Apple is superior in some aspects, Unix is superior in some aspects and wait for it.... Windows is superior in some aspects. There is no "Perfect" OS, and I use all three in my house.
-
@WildBaboons Since the AppleII!
And if in keeping with that dismissive tone, go with this reply instead: and you're probably kind of a wanker if you think this nonsense hasn't been tiresome since then, and that the reality you describe, as Auspice and Seamus laid out clearly, is well past its sell-by date on accuracy.
Which brings us right back around to 'the 90s-00s want their wank back', and it's almost 2020.

Back on track:
What I personally want in a tablet keyboard (and Ark might, too, based on a discussion we had yesterday) is something that is an all-in-one package. I want it to be part of a case/cover. I also don't want one of those non-tactile "squishy" keyboards that make me have no idea if I actually hit a key or not, leading to where I miss 90% of the keystrokes I make.

That's the biggest complaint I have with the IR Keyboard. If I type too fast it will not catch the key strokes and will cause typos like it is smoking crack. Again, I really only got it because geek and nerd-fu showoffness.

No.
I you, but Apple has earned every bit of the eye-rolling and hate that it gets. Every operating system gets its fair share, but I'm just gonna leave this here:
-
Just get a converter cable, use your regular keyboard. Done.
Edited as I just realised you said you otherwise use a laptop. But you don't need a special keyboard - just get a cheap normal one, a converter cable, and that will do it. I do it with my tablet (an android too btw.)
-
@Derp sorry, but no. Have the wank elsewhere. It is not remotely relevant to this hobby, and it's fucking tiresome and juvenile.
Go refer to the youtube classic 'it's ok to not like things' often referenced here and recognize it applies in full.
For anyone not familiar with it, if's pretty fucking simple: 'it's ok to not like things but don't be a dick about it'. You, Ark, and WildBabboons could use a refresher course on that little tune, because this is truly needless dickery being slung at fellow members of the community.
-
@surreality You're the one being the dick here, Surr. Ark made a mild, jocular comment, you started screeching like a harridan.
