Are you doing Inktober? NaNoWriMo? Other things?

      Hello?

      Anybody?

I'm planning a book and am lonely.

I am in cheerleader mode for NaNoWriMo.

I suggest signing up for https://chatnano.net/ if your region is signed up for it (if they aren't, make them!). Mostly because a former MU*er and one of my best friends runs it and codes Timmy the ChatBot (https://twitter.com/BotTimmy). But also because the IRC community on chatnano is really awesome. Timmy hosts word wars and will tell you when one is running any time, any where. So even if YOUR region isn't running one, you can hop into a channel where one is.

(And since you can join any region in addition to your home region, feel free to join Utah - Elsewhere. That's the one run by my friend, Utoxin. He'll be happy to have you.)

Anyway, I'm not joining this year because I'm under massive deadlines at work where they, well, y'know, pay me to write. So it's hard to add NaNo on top of that I'm afraid.

Saying the quiet parts out loud since 1996.

Yeah, what with the whole "having to write briefs, motions, and memoranda while at work" thing, I'm very doubtful of my ability to come home and write ~1700 words per day.

It is doable and I have done it. But it wasn't easy (or really fun and I fell off the proverbial wagon halfway through).

And there are people who call themselves 'rebels' who count EVERYTHING they write even if it isn't strictly their novels. >.>

Every year I say I'm going to do nano and then I don't. I do enjoy the nano forums, though. Particularly the 'adopt a' whatever threads.

This thread seems suitable for this..

I am debating what to work on during the period of unemployment I may have (I am applying for things, but I still might hit end of January and not have something yet). I have two projects I've been wanting to do, it's a question of which one.

Option A) Feature-length script based on Bradbury's short story, The Veldt.
The very first time I listened to this song, the movie came to me. I have some notes on it, some rough outlines/concepts worked up, and a crystal clear vision of the final scene. However, I've only written short films and outlined one feature length. I've never written a feature length and the idea is daunting.

Option B) Cyberpunk vampire. I mean, there's a lot more to it than that, but those two words sum it up nicely. Or if you want three words: 'Vampires in SpAAaaAAAace'
This is something I've been picking at for over a year now. I have about a notebook's worth (spread out across a few notebooks since one is 'Story.' one is 'Characters,' etc...) of details. I've written a short story about one of the characters to get to know him better.

I need to just pick one and focus on it. Unfortunately, both appeal to me quite a bit.

Thing 1) this just cause a longer account of what's happening in the room/AI/whatever (kids plotting to kill parents) would be interesting.

Thing 2) a MU-version of this involving various 'plots' or as folks call them these days 'seasons' in different genre's worlds for a few weeks to a few months with the in-between plots time being trying to figure out what's happening with these intelligent VR immersion rooms should be done. I'd vote some odd, deep, supernatural thing where the singularity/universe/deity is opening the way to lost dimensions or otherworld or dreams as folks like to say these days as part of the meta.

My concept for it is to delve further into the psychiatrist (McClean) and use him as the protagonist. Expand on the whole world since it's very obviously a cyberpunk (though the term didn't exist back when the story was written) world. You have an automated home that caters to everyone's needs. A 'nursery' that gives children a fully immersive (holodeck-like) experience to play out stories.

I see it being a man investigating similar cases and trying to uncover what's going on behind the scenes of the 'Happy Home' megacorp.

@Auspice That's good, and goes back to pre-cyperpunk era with corp/AI/govs using tech to brainwash/control even. Not saying you intend to go that way, but it bridges a lot of interesting gaps given its time frame and a lot of the work that has followed.

This was a movie once. Particulary, Dracula in Space.

The Veldt was also a TV episode on a Twilight Zone-esque show in the 70s. And it was terrible.

Just because something was done bad once doesn't mean it's always bad (or else we'd have all given up everything vampire after Twilight).

When I think of the Veldt, all I can think of is FF6.
