The conversation I keep having is the 'this proves that we should have people work and school from home all the time! It's so easy!'

Like, yes, if working from home works for you: great. It doesn't for everyone. And it requires a certain level of discipline that not everyone has.
And schooling online is a whole other bag. Part of why it took me so long to pursue my degree is while I can work from home, I don't learn great without a structured environment. Online school is basically audio/visual learning only and a relatively small number of people benefit from that style of instruction. I'm very much someone who is hands-on, who needs to be able to see things done and then mimic so that I can see myself go through the process. Video calls help this, but they're also not as feasible. There's no replacement for a teacher moving around the classroom to see people at their work and spot where help is needed.
And 'but what about their parents' is not valid, either. As someone who had to homeschool (my parents wouldn't enroll me in a school for HS: I asked, often)....my mother barely graduated herself and would stare blankly at my work. My father's style of teaching was 'yell until I got it or left in tears' (usually the latter). Or worse: kids with bad home environments?
I think the unfortunate thing is that quarantine is still 'novel' to a lot of people and seen as a fun-thing-to-do (which, I guess is OK if it means they're staying home).

Entirely agree. From my own experiences, from siblings experiences, to my stepson's (when I was married), to my current studies in certification.

I don't drink, but I'm learning a lot of recipes for quarantinis.
So I'm home because I'm high risk in a high risk job. No problem. Executive orders came down to pay out unemployment because of Covid and state of emergency. - However, now my employer is contesting it because it's technically a 'leave' not a 'firing'. SMH
Under executive orders here for Covid, they don't even have to pay out for it as a business. I paid my taxes, etc. I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed. Since the option really is lose my job as it is to get paid a very small share of what I normally make. Or go back to work in a very high risk and essential job when I'm very high risk (immune disorder, lung issue, stuff, things). It's just frustrating is all.
Like I said, I'm not angry. I'm just disappointed I think and a bit put out that it's my health or my paycheck/bills/whatever. Just venting.
You may want to see a lawyer and discuss the concept of bad faith with them.

I'm angry. On your behalf. Wow, that's completely shitty and I'm sorry you're dealing with such an awful and heartless employer who deserves both a good shaking and a legal system that holds them better accountable for their lack of ethics and insensitivity.
I'm not a lawyer at all. I don't even play one on tv. I don't think they are acting in bad faith. I mean they didn't tell me they would pay me on the leave and then not do it. They didn't force me on the leave. I took it voluntarily.
I'm sure everything will be fine. I just really don't want to get this illness and I also want to be able to make bills. I'm not the only one with this struggle. It's just like I said, sad and disappointing.
You still should see a lawyer. I don't know what jurisdiction you live in, but you may be entitled to paid leave under the recent federal legislation and you may still be entitled to unemployment for a voluntary layoff resulting from the pandemic under state law.

If the company is not being "harmed" by your getting assistance than there is no reason not to fight for that assistance prior to making a choice between continued employment and getting it.
Really hoping the nausea I keep having is just a combination of HRT and intense stress.

My peeve today: people blatantly ignoring social distancing rules.
I gotta go shopping. There's shit I need. I don't WANNA be in the store, but ffs. They have marked off lines/areas for a goddamn reason. If I'm waiting for the elderly lady in front of me to get situated, that's not a sign for you and your kids (who you're also letting touch everyone and everything) to PHYSICALLY PUSH PAST BOTH ME AND HER to get in the store.
And I understand the employees not saying/doing anything. I wish they would, but I get it. They're tired, stressed, and don't wanna risk the confrontation.
But goddamn people.

One of the guys he cut in front of took exception and pulled him back out of the store. I thought for a minute that a fight was going to break out but the assistant manager showed up and then, a moment later, a deputy. They served the guy with a notice not to trespass and ordered him off of the premises. Everyone in the line cheered

I have not been able to find TP anywhere since this all started (for my area, anyway) two weeks ago. Fortunately I was able to uhhhh liberate most of a case of it from work (kidding, the boss actually suggested we help ourselves to the TP and paper towels).
