So the last time I did any MU*ing was well over a year ago, and even then I was coming in really rusty after a previous long hiatus. I feel pretty much like a newbie, except I still remember the basic commands.

Now I finally have the time and energy to play again, I just have no idea where to play.

I remembered Arx and checked it out, but it looks like they don't allow original character creation atm which made it not an option for me.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Where is everyone playing these days?

My experience and resources are mainly around WoD, superhero games, fantasy and scifi, but I also love original concepts and historical stuff. I don't mind small games, and I might be able to bring in more people as I have some friends who are also looking for a new "home".

I didn't see any recent threads with this theme, please move this if it's in the wrong board.

For your WoD fix, Modern Nights has recently reopened.

I've only been there a few days but the people seem nice.

There's an index of Ares games here: https://arescentral.aresmush.com/games

If you're interested in a modern setting and usually active during this time of day, it might be worth checking out Gray Harbor in particular.

@sixregrets Beat me to it. We've got a small handful of European time zone players at least.

Agh, total pity. I would have been in the same boat, I hope it reopens for you soon.

It seems like it's going to be a long while before OCs open up on Arx again. But! I saw someone posting that they were trying to make a new roster character so maybe that process is still open? Can work with someone to make a roster you'd want to take up? Really not sure if that is open right now either though, but I saw it on the internet so it's probably true.

@wildbaboons My understanding as far as making new roster characters is that people who want to add new roster bits can reach out to staff about wanting to do so, but in the same breath should not expect staff to make approving new roster characters a top priority right now.

                  now playing

So I recently discovered Elder Tale Online, and was considering writing an advertising post for it, but I'll definitely plug it here for you:

It's an anime (Sword Art Online, ./hack and another, I forget) inspired Isekai game with a combat system reminiscent of Slay the Spire. You actually collect cards, and the cards can not only be used in combat, but they grant 'Concepts' for other things. It's kind of lengthy to explain here, but suffice to say, it's REALLY impressive how it's set up, and this is from someone who's been mushing for ~25 years.

ETO features a "Duty Finder" type system that is essentially like running a PUG on an MMO, in a dungeon, complete with random events. Except the PUGs aren't nearly as noxious as they are in MMOs.

The overall theme, being Isekai, is that everyone is trapped in a virtual MMORPG, and as such you have not just a 'player' level but also a 'character' level to your character bit. IE, you have yourself controlling the player of the game, who is trapped within their own character bit within that game.

The community so far has been nothing but helpful, compassionate, friendly, and welcoming, and I'd highly recommend at least poking your head in if you're MUSH shopping. FC and OC are both allowed, and the game's vast system allows for just about any fantasy (and maybe even some steampunk) concept to be playable.

The only thing I can't comment extensively on is the RP, as I've only been approved for about 2 days and haven't had much of a chance to dive in, but given the quality I saw from the one Duty I took place in, I'd say it's going to be pretty high quality.

Also, alts are allowed (up to 3) but time gated (I think every 25 days or something) and there is a very active playerbase with staff run scenes/plots.

@ortallus ... Wow. Ok yeah, I'm extremely interested. Isekai is one of my favorite genres, and I'm especially fond of the "stuck in a game" version, so this sounds amazing. Thank you for the description and the link! I'm going to check it out right now.

I see there were a couple guest logins this morning and someone spoke to Uta. I'm on now so if you guys need any help or have any questions hop on in. It really is a great place and I'd love to see more people join (even though they do have a good healthy pbase).

Not sure if you're into Transformers but it does fall into the sci-fi category. Both are great!

I'm slowly getting back into MUSHing myself. I found two good Ares-hosted games

Shadows & Shields: The theme is 'Marvel Comics Espionage' with the initial focus being SHIELD vs. HYDRA. I'm playing Tony Stark there. There's room for creative takes on characters (both Cap and Red Skull are females, with the Super-Soldier Formula only working on women), and you can pitch an OC.
                                http://shadowsandshields.com/

X-Men Divergence: Marvel game centered on the new mutant nation of Krakoa, a few months after the Genoshan Genocide. So, based around the recent events in the comics, but that's only a starting point where the game diverges. So far, only OC, but the staff does a good job of rostering characters and sometimes altering event & character histories from the comics so that the whole X-cannon fits together a bit smoother, not to mention condensed. Big playerbase and several active plots. I play Beast there.

@vixanic I haven't seen a lot of CofD 2e MUSHes. Actually, I haven't seen any, aside from my own, which didn't take off.

                                  Is 2e kind of irrelevant?

I think there were a couple that lasted at least 6-ish or so months, as for relevancy or irrelevancy of 2E that's probably a topic for a new thread.

There are two other WoD games on Ares, where you hosted, and they're both 2e as far as I can tell.

@wizz Sorry to derail the thread a bit but am I completely wrong in thinking WoD used to not work well for Ares due to its internal combat system limitations?

Has this been addressed or are folks using workarounds?

@arkandel it's not built in like FSS, but there is a perfectly functional dice roller.

People are using workarounds. Ares and CoD/WoD don't play well together, so people are storing sheets on Google Drive, and using other dice rollers. It's awkward, which is a shame. I do think that the lack of modern conveniences in a WoD/CoD friendly format is keeping people who might make games from doing so.
