Which gets sticky if someone is also active on wikidot for something not related to this hobby. There are just enough stalker issues that this could create more problems than it solves, unfortunately.
Interesting. Every game I've played on in the past few years uses Wikidot for their game wikis, and people have no problem creating additional logins if they don't want to use their OOC one. Some even create different wikidot logins for each game if they're worried about being stalked. :shrugs: It's a solved problem in my game circles.
@Roz You could tie it together with Wikidot too - I've done player/alt lists before on Wikidot in an automated fashion. That said, if you're more familiar with MediaWiki there's no reason to switch other than the universal login aspect for alt verification.
But if people are making separate accounts to join the wikidot wiki, how do you have any universal login alt verification in any way more than you do with a mediawiki where they have to make a user account to make their list anyway?
Making your own wiki instead of one on a wikifarm gives you MUCH more control over it, in my experience.

It only works if their wikidot username becomes their player identity. Let's say you've got Larry, Curly and Moe as wikidot usernames. If Larry posts an update saying Joe@CoolMUSH is an alt of Larry, you know it's legit. If Curly posts an update saying Joe@CoolMUSH is an alt of Larry, your moderator has reason to be suspicious.
Edit to clarify: If Bob the player has created two separate wikidot usernames (Larry and Curly) for two games, it's because he doesn't want those alts to be connected to each other OOCly, so him wouldn't be trying to claim them both as alts in the first place.

@faraday
Sure, but what you have with the self-hosted mediawiki is, you've got Larry, Curly, and Moe as usernames on the wiki. The wiki's been set not to allow anonymous editing. If Larry posts an update saying Joe@CoolMUSH is an alt of Larry, you know it's legit. If Curly posts an update saying Joe@CoolMUSH is an alt of Larry, your moderator has reason to be suspicious. So there's no difference there.As a bonus, @surreality's suggestion of using the User page as the Player's overall list means you could curate by things that user contributed and it would then be near impossible for someone else to attribute an alt to them.
-
@Ninjakitten Absolutely. But bear in mind that I was talking about a circle of games where everyone already uses wikidot. So there's already a concept of player identity there. And I don't have to worry about someone erroneously claiming Faraday@YourCustomWikiSite because I've already got Faraday@Wikidot. And so if you see someone posting at CoolMUSH or FooMUSH's wikidot sites with the Faraday handle, you can be assured it's the same person as the one in your player wiki.
-
Ahhh, I see where you're coming from with that! Yeah, in a situation where all the games people would be coming from already use the platform and they already have a username connected to that info for the other game(s), that would be handy.
Since not all the games that would be involved use wikidot, though, I don't think it would be as useful for this. Plus, those of us who didn't have wikidot names (or have ones that aren't our MU* community identities) would be in the position of having to worry about the potential username conflict instead, then, and I suspect there's a lot of usernames already in use on wikidot.

I support the idea that only a player can create entries for their character, however may I suggest that there be a way to:
-
list other characters you played with (this can be a simple text entry no harm there)
-
a requested list for entry, meaning I say hey I'd like to see Kay@TR the cephalopod feral make an entry and have that be someplace publicish. Like the Shout In The Dark forum here. but more of a list by MU* with an identifier to help differentiate between similar/the same names.

I can probably mod the 'seeking' template from BITN for the 'looking for person' lists. (It's used for wanted concepts/wanted scenes, take a peek over there for an example.)
-
I like both those ideas -- people you played with might be something a player can list on a character's page.
So some important questions if it's going to happen are who's going to host it, where, and what to call it...
ETA: thinking about naming, I realised I still have 'texthibitionism' from when I was planning to make a central site people for people to post logs, years back. More appropriate for that, but could sort of work for this. Or it could be MUspace and everyone can have autoplay playlists of MP3s, terrible background images, and lots of flashy gifs.

I would always go for Game - Player - Character, because I hate reading Bob first, thinking it's a dude I know, then reading further and seeing it is not, in fact, Bob from FunGame37, but a Bob from LameGameIHaven'tPlayedEver298.
-
I hope that this is a volunteer thing and you folks aren't talking about basically documenting other people's history. Because this project mostly comes across as creepy as hell to me and invasive.
-
@Cobaltasaurus No, I think there's been several agreements throughout the threads that it would only be people putting up their own playlists, as it were. In essence an organized, collected form of people's playlists on here. (Were they to submit them.)

Though Player - Game - Character could also work, because stuff.

Yeah its for listing yourself. I guess that is creepy and invasive.
-
@Cobaltasaurus Yeah, volunteer-only seems to be the intent here, much like the playlists on MSB or some of the old livejournal or FB groups that people post the info themselves. It's not a new idea by a mile, it's just a different implementation of it.
Broadly speaking -- and this is a case of 'oh god, scope creep!' that makes me cringe even as I mention it -- it may be a good idea to have a field for game type. As in, don't limit it to MUSH/MUX. Open up to MUDs, play by email, play by post, etc.
Why? Well, a lot of players here have multi-venue overlaps like that. It might be a good way to show some folks here some viable alternatives if there's nothing that's grabbing them at the moment in their favored medium. If there are some folks they already know who they could get in touch with to help them get started, this is a big plus. Along the same lines, this could maybe draw some people from the IRC/play by post/etc. crowd over to MUSH/MUX, which I've seen happen. The mention of the reincarnated writers game on livejournal, elsethread, comes to mind; a lot of folks here may never realize how many people they run into in another RP type are actually the same players, too, simply because 'it's a different RP medium'.

I guess I don't see why this is something that is needed, really. Not when MSB has the shout in the dark area where people are already listing their alts. If MSB were like how WORA used to be and people wouldn't log in because of how toxic the board was at times, I could understand it. But I really don't see the point to a stand alone, add yourself to the database if you want database, really.
I just got off an 8 hour shift, I'll say really as much as I want, thank you!

Pfft. Really?

@Sunny Really, really!
