      Hey folks,

While I slave away at SWR...I have a buddy who has an entertainment company and is interested in starting a few mu*'s...or looking at the potential.

The first one is a Trek Mush. I know there New Hope and ATS out there...but I saw something out there from a few people who said they would have interest in a trekmu. Question would be...Do we want something based on one ship (ala new hope) or base, or something more expansive emcompassing an entire galaxy (ala ATS) utilizing a space system with aspace or hspace. Combat or RP?

The second one is a MUD more than a mush...but based on the Guardians of the Galaxy universe from Marvel. Different factions (nova corp, ravagers, guardians, etc). It would be a mud, with Rp elements and a space and space combat system. What are your folks thoughts?

      Cheers!

First off: My Buddy who 'runs an entertainment company' & wants to run a few MU*s- now I am no lawyer, but that sounds kinda complicated legally speaking. (Mostly because all mu's, except for a few, are not pay to play. (i.e the creators make no money from them).

II: Dealing with Copyright stuff and 'owning an entertainment busy'. could be poorly perceived if someone stumbles across something like:

THis Mu* produced 'Red Oni Entertainment' ( and its say Star Trek), you did hear about the Fan movie that got its butt kicked when was it Paramount realized that they'd turned on a Kickstarter and raised money to help fund their project... right?

Just saying, it sounds like an awkward zone.

Third? Why those two properties? Why not something original? Star Trek games are tricky to keep running :They're either Paperwork the MU- (Gamma One I am looking at you, I loved it its space station game play was good!) Or they get bogged down with 'social RP'.

Gaurdians of the Galaxy- Interesting franchise ( with movie 2 on the way at some point I think): but I wonder if it'd have the staying power of a MU to attract and hold players.

MU*s are about keeping people at their screens, and roleplaying, in today's busy world that's tricky.

"buddy who runs an entertainment company" is a lot different then "buddy who owns an entertainment company and wants to make money on a copyrighted existing genre". I also own my own company, as do a lot of owners/staff of MU*'s...that's irrelevant unless you are trying to profit off a game. I don't remember the last person who profited off a MUSH.

Star Trek because there is a bounce in viewership with the JJish movies continuing to be released. Plus there is Star Trek: Discovery due in the fall. Why not tap in to it? I agree that Trek is tricky, but can be done.

GotG would be a lot easier to hold attention in a hack n slashy RP mud then it would on a RP required MU.

If it wasn't relevant, then why did you lead with it?

                  @GangOfDolls Kinda that, yeah. πŸ˜•

It comes of sounding like either it's designed to be a money-making effort -- which is a sticky wicket for the reasons already mentioned -- or that it's an ask for credibility based on business experience that isn't likely to be especially relevant.

I mean, I've run a business RL for years, and been paid to entertain people in the past, but I don't talk about my M* projects as being 'run by a long-time business owner and former professional entertainer'. I may have learned a few things from both, but nothing that I feel is going to make me especially suited to the task in a way that makes these things worth even a mention, let alone the lead for an intro.

                  Oh fucking well.

I wouldn't either, because that sounds a lot like Donald Trump to me.

@Ganymede Pretty much, yup. (Edit: Though really it's worse, 'artist' and 'former ren faire actor'. They paid me! Sort of.)

It amazes me that we just wasted 15 posts on how I led a question in a thread.

The post wasn't about the relevance of the background. My buddy makes games. Some subscription, some f2p, some p2w. I was describing him, not asking for approval of his business models.

My question was the viability of a trek based mush, or a GotG based mud/mush, as far as interest goes. I'm well aware of the pros and cons of paid commercial ventures. That wasn't my question.

I think we were mostly taking advantage of what you wrote for a giggle.

I'm not a big fan of GotG, and I don't know enough people who are big enough fans to consider RPing in that part of the Marvel Universe.

A Trek game you'd find more traction with, I'd reckon.

Leading with something like that implies that it's relevant. If it's relevant, I actually wanted to know why. The snarky non-reply killed my interest in any further discussion on the rest of it. Why should I bother?
