Anyone using SimpleMu and Windows 10? I'm having an issue where even though none of my auto-connects are checked, I'm still auto-connecting. I've removed the name from it and am hoping I'll just get the welcome screen since I really don't want to delete the password.

It's fixable, but annoying. Anyone else have this happen?

While I haven't had this happen personally, as I use Potato, I've heard enough about SimpleMu to make me question:

Why do people still use it?

I mean, I'm not trying to detract from your topic at all. I'm really not. I know that a great many people prefer it, overall, but it's a client that hasn't been supported through at least, what, two versions of windows? You can just barely get the full version without key-cracker software at this point, but people still adore this thing.

What does it have that other, supported clients like Mushclient and Potato don't have? Is it tradition, or is it some actual feature of it that just draws people to it? What can it do that others can't? The only thing I've heard so far, overall, is that spawning is simpler. But is that really worth all of the headaches that come with all the problems?

And (perhaps more importantly, and more on the point), we have a number of people that are pretty proficient in coding and interface design, being a hobby for computer nerds, after all. Why has nobody taken up the banner to make a SimpleMU replacement that adds in all of the functionality of the things they love about it?

I think that this is a good example of something that we're rooted in by tradition, even though at times it seems counterproductive to the point of being somewhat destructive. We love the things that give us trouble, but are unwilling to part with them for Reasons(TM).

Anyway, does anyone have a solution for @surreality??

P.S. (Once again, sorry for possibly detracting from your thread, but I'm a bit intoxicated and fighting with the boyfriend, and wanted to get this out on "paper" before it flew out of my head. I'll probably move it to another thread in the morning when I'm thinking more clearly.)

Well I have a legit key and I'm cheap, so that's one thing. I paid for it and it still works so I use it. (And if anyone needs a key I'm more than happy to share, no extra viruses!) I like the spell checker as it happens in real time with the red squiggles since I tend to type fast, but I also type Canadian. Growing up I learned how to spell things both ways because US TV was all we had beside CBC and we didn't even get a Canadian Sesame Street until I was much older. So I sometimes say zee instead of zed, and the u's I put into words are jarring to me when I rp with someone who doesn't put the u's in. And I think logs just look nicer if everyone is spelling things the same way. So having it autocorrect as I types helps me. Also, I like the spawn windows and how they are used, especially when I'm staff and on eleventy billion different channels. I can make each channel have it's own tab, and I don't loose anything.

So for me that's it. I paid for it and it still works, and I like how it works. And change is bad. I RP so little now I don't want to have to learn something new, I want to RP.

Anyway, does anyone have a solution for @surreality??

I'm not @surreality but I guess if we go way back in time, I could throw a Cabana Boy at her. (If I feel old, then I'm taking some of you with me!)

The combination of as-you-type spellchecking, spawned windows is my main reason, which no one else seems to have. Plus the fact no other client has a killer feature I want enough to switch.

I actually have MUSHclient and Potato installed on this PC, and I find they both just don't work the way I like. It's just a matter of personal preference. I got used to it because of /grab, and now I'm just comfortable with it. It still works, I paid for it 15 years ago, why fix what ain't broke?

As for the auto-connect... While I've never had the problem personally, you could try:

@Insomnia - In your SITES folder (mine is buried in c:\programdata\microsoft\windows\start menu\programs\simplemu\sites), find the .dat file for the affected world. At the bottom of it, there should be a setting that says:

              [Settings]
              AutoConnect=1

Change it to AutoConnect=0 and cross your fingers.

My husband would kill me. 😕 Even if sent over on the days when he works out of town, I'm sure the smell of coconut tanning lotion and pina coladas would give me away.

                Oh fucking well.

@krmbm Thanks, I will try that. I'm on a computer that it doesn't happen on, but I'll post when I can check it out.

@surreality I guess it's kind of getting a little cold for it too. Would you settle for some pie?

(God I feel old. Is this like... 3 WORAS back now? I think that's the last time you were mistaken for me? I think I had the same avatar then too. Now I want pie.)

@Insomnia What's extra funny to me is that... I'm on a mac, so no simplemu for me. 😄

I will happily share some of Bri's birthday cake, though. It's delicious. ❤

Ditto, it's what got me on to MU*s. I had previously been playing on Talkers and using Zmud to connect. Actually, I think found SimpleMu around that time too.

Checked the folder and it was already set to 0. Thanks though!

ETA but apparently that worked too.

Dear God, I had completely forgotten about Savitar. I used to hang out with the author of that app years ago, on The Cold Dark. Good times.

Not a SimpleMu user but I can tell you way most people still use it. They know it. While it might be easy to get the hang of a new client, I know I would only switch from MUSHClient if the computer I had refused to run it and ten only grudgingly.
It is the same with a lot of things, people will tend to stick with what they know until forced to change then will try to find the option most like what they left.
This is why I am a Playstation, I am sure there are many good reasons to prefer one gaming system over the other but I will always go with PS because I know the controller layout like the back of my hand. Sure each edition changes a little but I know where button x is without having to look if you tell me to do something hit x.

It's simple, really. SimpleMu does everything I want it to. Why should I replace it when it works fine?

Every spawn window in SimpleMU comes with its own input area, so it has potentially many more than a 'mere' dual input windows.

Also, 'pretty, pretty' colours is very subjective. The times I have seen what people make when given more than the sixteen ansi colours, it's looked like My First Website circa 1998 or so. Your mileage may vary, but I MU* to play a text-based roleplaying game, not to see how many colours the staff can cram on the screen at once.

Yeah, if I were on a mud then colours might be useful, but I tend to shut them off on games, because it always seems that people want to make the most eye-bleeding colours as comtitles as possible. Plus if I want colour I just make an event to highlight my name, or a channel so it stands out.

Mostly the comtitles though. Generally what other people think as pretty colours I find obnoxious. So I don't miss 256 colours in other clients, really.
