Final Fantasy III (6), Christmas of 1994. Still the best FF game ever made and my dad really made that year for me since he gave it to me as a secret gift.

It wasn't to me, but one year my brother got Dark Tower. We played that thing until the motor started giving out.

Hah. I got FF2/4 the year it came out. The memories of the nailbiting OH GOD WAT DO in some of the fights back when I was like 10.

Best part of that game is when you'd get to the Tower, but you were starving to death, so you'd get BOTH the death sound and the victory sound when your turn started.

I was 16 when I got my first video game and console. My parents were adamant that I shouldn't play video games because it was a waste of time. I ended up putting together my own computer when I was 12 and I guess after four years of me spending all my time on that thing, they gave up...
Anyway, I got the PS2 and Final Fantasy X. Ended up playing that game straight through for two days during my winter break from school. It was great. -

Sure, I've gotten "better" gifts over the years, but FF6 will always stand out to me. I just remember wanting it and wanting it after seeing it in Nintendo Power. My parents were well aware of what I wanted that year, and then for him to just randomly pull me aside after all the other presents were handled and giving it to me. Yeah.

I got both the original red and blue D&D books back when I was in the sixth grade, so, 1982.

One of the best gaming-related things I received was the Texas Instruments 99/4-a computer my nana bought me when I was in fifth or sixth grade. It was a lot of fun to play but I eventually had competition as my papa discovered those magazines with programs for the various home computers that were out. He wound up using my computer more than I did.

First thing that bubbled up was my mother getting the boxed FGU Aftermath! game for me. I wanted that game so badly and was that ever a world of disappointment. I joke the game should be called After! Math! because of the complexity making the game a complete bore and drag to play.
She also got a Macross VT-01 Ostrich fighter when I was 13 that I resold awhile back for $1500 when I needed a car quickly. She was happy a toy she got me for Christmas bailed me out of a sticky financial moment.

This brings tears to my eyes.
I had the complete GoDaiKin collection (all the main robots as well as all the side-robots/vehicles/etc) before I went off to college. All mint condition, boxed, nicely arranged, and hidden in my closet.
I came back from college to find nearly every toy, broken, outside, sitting in a sandbox.
With my 8-12 year old nephews still playing with some.My brother's comment was 'well, they're just toys, get over it'.
I haven't gotten over it. I never will. And yes, the majority of my family are assholes

@Ashen-Shugar I feel you on this.
I also could have throttled my mother for selling off all of my My Little Ponies at a garage sale for fifty cents a piece when I could have made bank on the little buggers on ebay at the time.
But I digress. <cough> She claimed to not believe this was possible until I reminded her that selling a handful of Jem doll shoes on ebay the year before had brought in over $250. 
My geekery in terms of any kind of gaming has never been encouraged by my family, unfortunately, and most of my friends are all in the same 'we give each other hugs and best wishes or make little things for each other for Xmas because we're all broke as hell' category.
The geekery that tends to get fed around the holidays here is my fixation on costume and art history books, though, which is very much

@Ashen-Shugar It was not a decision made lightly for certain. As much as I wanted anything BUT the VT-01 at the time it was cherished. I had a similar situation with all my model kits when I was 17. Went to work on a Saturday, came home to find them all smashed to pieces and the family response was to get over it, kids will be kids. Besides the money spent on all these Japanese import model kits, the time put into assembly and painting was ridiculous. I mean, my painting was pretty mediocre then (as it is now) but it was still time invested. It was probably close to ten years before I started painting anything again because I was so upset over the incident.

@TwoGunBob ...nnngh, that hurt to read. I collected anime figure kits for a while as a teenager and specifically tried to learn airbrushing just to make them as awesome as I could. (I remained bad at it, unfortunately, but damn, I still treasured those things.)

This was one of the few that were not broken that I salvaged out of the sandbox.

@Ashen-Shugar And still awesome to me after all these years. Brings me back to the Christmas jealousy of those kids that got the GIANT Shogun Warriors. You know the ones, and you know the envy you felt if you didn't have them.

@surreality I'm glad to say that since getting back into the miniatures painting it's been a great anxiety killer. I'll never be a professional by any stretch but just sitting with the quiet, my thoughts, and a paint brush has been a good valve for my sanity. Was a time I'd mu* and paint but when I started realizing how much painting I was getting done between responses I had to take a look at where I was playing kind of.

@Ashen-Shugar OMG, I remember my cousin getting one of these for Xmas! His was one of the giant ones I think, though. I got a 'Big Barbie' (not the creepy human child size ones they make now, just 20 inches or something) that year and we both knew we were getting those things, and kept trying to guess whose giant box was which.
That still stands out somehow as Best Xmas Ever, even all these zillion old fart years later.
