@Sparks This is the first game I encountered ascii desces in a weapon or item. I find that...strange, actually. So I would not expect ascii art. Just...a good desc.

Well, there's also +shop, where you can walk into a crafter's shop, bring the materials—in the case of a sword, for instance, that's four ingots of whatever material—and provide the desc yourself, but get to use the crafter's dice. 🙂

Yes I keep being told that. But also I am horrible at desces. It also does not generate RP for the crafter which I think is one of the perks of searching for a smith or tailor or something.

I actually disagree; I have had some folks come in, RP about having a specific design they want, and then use +shop to do so. Now, usually they do this because they want to make something using all their AP to reduce the difficulty (which is not an option if I make it, code-wise), but we still get RP from such an exchange.

Now, I also get the desire to have an object show up you didn't desc, because it's a little like unwrapping a present; seeing how someone else interpreted your request is always fun. I know Magpie was utterly thrilled with Windward and Leeward, the two blades I made him, because he hadn't expected how they'd turn out.

I like crafting with rainbow vomit. I admit this.

Once I asked a crafter to make a coat for a gift that looked like a rainbow vomited on it. The crafter agreed, but on condition I not reveal his identity.

          Good times.

@Jaded I think you might be overestimating how much fun a "i want a seven piece armor set made of GOLD that shows off my BUTT" is for a crafter.

I mean, maybe there's a unicorn out there that really, really, likes to RP taking measurements and dithering over prices.

            I just have my doubts.

The shops were implemented because I think crafters would probably like to be able to rp about non commission stuff, and maybe, MAYBE have time to work on projects they like, to put up for sale. It's my fond dream to have a grid with stores where there's actual stuff to browse.

I tend toward just using shop code, assuming that an apprentice or some such did the work, and go from there. In the past I've used Hana and others for projects and when asked what I wanted, my general answer was just some variant of "whatever you want to do, Phil". Mostly it's a matter of not wanting to feel like an inconvenience to the crafter in question.

Though when Ida was active I did have some fun scenes with that character and player surrounding a commission, but it wasn't actually anything coded. It was to discuss a harness for an animal retainer, so nothing that was any sort of coded need. RP for the sake of RP.

In short: be kind to your friendly neighborhood crafter. They really don't need to put up with your shit. Besides, if one asks around they can tend to find people who enjoy doing ASCII and coloring stuff for the sheer fun of it or their BFFs of the Week.

@Kanye-Qwest Are you saying there are people out there who don't want to RP about my butt?

I didn't understand it in Firan either. To be honest, I find most ASCII art ugly as sin. Only a few pieces have made me go "Oh, wow! That's neat!"

@Faceless I miss Ida and stories of Tomato Bacon Chef.

Well, a lot of people like it. Luckily, using ASCII art is completely, 100% opt in! So you don't have to if you don't like it.

@Ominous I admit I don't understand what the purpose of voicing this is other than to be like "I hate this thing all you people like and it's ugly."

@Roz The prevalence of ASCII art indicates that most people like it. I am adding my voice to Jaded's showing that their opinion isn't some odd outlier that no one shares. I apologize that a lack of conformity offends you.

@Roz I admit to not understanding what the purpose of you voicing your issue with my initial post is, if it wasn't as a smack to the knuckles with a ruler for sharing in the subjective opinion that something isn't as good as everyone thinks it is.

I used to use ascii for my crafter on Firan, it can be a lot of fun. I don't like it when color schemes are garish as all hell though and clash badly.

Depends on if people honestly want to call me out on my off-hand opinion.

I hate most ASCII art. It's as ugly as sin. That is all. I'm not giving a dissertation on some new insight into the human experience. It's an opinion given in support to someone else who offered a related opinion on the topic being discussed. The sensible response would be for a person to shrug their shoulders at it and move on rather than calling me out for having an opinion on some minor tidbit of our very insulated and unimportant hobby.

OR you could say the sensible thing would be to keep it to yourself if you don't like X thing other people are talking about liking. I mean, I hate Star Wars, but when people are like omg the new Star Wars so fun!!!11 I don't assume that's my moment to shine and go ham on their enjoyment. That's just me, though. Cash me ousside.
