How Many Alts Would An Alt User Alt If An Alt User Could Use Alts

@Thenomain You are exhausting.
-
I can own that.
Twenty years of this hobby plus I like to talk.
Thenomain does mean "cannot be shut up".
Ahhem.
-
@Thenomain
Being talkative is cool, but the pedantry. That's all. I shouldn't have said it like it was the entire summation of you. But, you were making me tired all over at that moment. IT STANDS. -
What? No. Main = primary character, alt = everything else, and no, the hobby doesn't in general change that definition. Maybe some corners of it, but your redefinition is absolutely an unnecessary redefinition that needlessly complicates an already murky issue.
-
@Sunny Er, most folks I know who have multiple characters don't designate one as a main and the others as secondary. They're just all alternates to one another.

Yeah. At this point 'alt' has just taken the same meaning as 'character' in common parlance, in my experience.
-
@Coin As long as they don't call them 'toons'. Please don't call them 'toons'.
-
Well I did say I didn't know how we got to the conversation, so I was covering my bases, and that I started pedantic to make a broader point which I did, then clarified "alts" because I knew someone else would get pedantic, and there it is, someone else being pedantic about it, and AIGH I'M DOING IT AGAIN!
I can't remember the last time I've heard the term "main". More than five years, I think, so yeah our experience is vastly different.
-
Whatever. I am clearly so off base in my viewpoints that I'm not really sure why I am even bothering anymore. Peace out.

I downvoted this, cause upvoting this makes it seem like I agree with you, get out the door, but no .. you're not off base. I agree with you, a 1 alt policy means 2 chars to me, not one character.

It might be difficult to avoid someone with 15 alts, especially if they are prone to making/dropping them with no notice.
They thankfully list their current/former PCs on their user page so it's not difficult to avoid them. My only gripe is that I really can't say I care for this person and for a while it felt like they had an alt in every single sphere just about. Thankfully they are down to three alts and the one sphere I am in with them is large enough that I can easily ignore them without gimping myself when it comes time to want to look for RP.
-
@Lotherio Generally, games that talk about a 1 alt policy don't mean you get two characters, they mean you get one and only one. (Which is only really relevant in this convo in the sense that the folks talking about 1 alt have been talking about one login/character only so far as I can tell.)

Nah, I'm still in the boat on my side. You get one char, if you get an alternative, you get 2 chars, one doesn't have to be a main. I do get it, if a place says you get three alts, it means three characters, its part of the lexicon, but if I see a policy say you get alternatives, it implies more than one ... something to alternate.

Disappointed that I know who you are talking about and avoid for the same reason.

I was thinking one (1) this whole time. Whoops? Not whoops? Bottom line is, the idea of not seeing user pages with 8 current PCs and 38 retired PCs is appealing.
-
@Lotherio I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the terminology, just that what people have been talking about here re: 1 alt? They are talking about one login only. They are specifically referencing games that in your terminology would be described as 'no alts permitted' as per the explicit policy on those games.

That works for me, not arguing that, just supporting the confusion @Sunny expressed in main and alt and the confusion that could abound.
-
@Haven For a small game that's been around 3 years, 8 current and 38 retired wouldn't surprise me a bit, nor would I find it remotely unrealistic or off-putting as a demonstration of people coming and going. What you're describing could very easily happen in those circumstances even if the game only allowed 1 character at any given time.

I understand the confusion, but not the anger that came from clarifying it. I also don't believe that limiting to one character bits or two makes a lot of difference in this discussion, no matter what it's called.

Because the math seems interesting, 38 alts in 36 months would be an average of alt-hopping every ~28 days (if we add in the 8 current PCs, that is an alt swap every ~22 days). Is that possible? Of course it is. Is that a recipe for breathtaking RP that remains burned on my brain for years? Less likely.
Again, this is my opinion, relating to me. If the alt policy is "Anything you can carry," and someone is rocking 137 alts that all RP for 6 days a piece, groovy. Just not my cup of tea.
-
@Haven Except that your math is ridiculous, because you're assuming only 8 players have ever played on the game over the course of that three year period.
