@Tempest Oh yeah, they'll probably do something dumb...but that gameplay demo got me legit excited. So far, they seem to be fucking it up less than I thought they might.

I'm torn. Part of me wants the same ffvii experience, just with better graphics and gameplay. Another part of me doesn't want the exact same story as before so that there are some surprises.

I have a feeling there will be changes due to the size and complexity of the game, as well as the fact that it's releasing in phases. If those stick to the same idea/feel/visuals as Advent Children, I don't feel like I could be disappointed. The big one will be Aerith. If the story remains the same only with better graphics, i feel like the impact will be more interesting than before. HOWEVER, I will be expecting it and would be pleasantly surprised if it flipped to Tifa or some other plot twist.

I also prefer Barrett stays Barrett.

Delete the Hog Pit. It'll be fun.

@Ghost I think there will be changes, because they've already said they are adding stuff. But! The gameplay demo still feels like FF7 -- moreso than anything in the Compilation before it, IMHO. I don't think it makes much sense for Tifa to die (Aerith dying is pretty fundamental, IMHO), but people have already pointed out the black-smoke things in the remake trailer that are in the Compilation, but not really in the original game...

I personally think FF7 is more popular than FF6 for a reason, and only has a little bit to do with "advanced" graphics or whatever: FF7 is more unique, especially setting-wise and tonally, and especially for the time, in the JRPG arena than FF6

FF7 owes a lot of its popularity to the fact that it was the first FF released for the PS. That aside, it was the first FF game that allowed you to customize the magic and skill set for your PCs without having to flip jobs constantly. FF6 was pretty close with learning magic, but FF7 brought more customization with the Materia system, which ended up being a template for later games like FF9.

Let me just say that I do like FF7 and I respect that it is a ground-breaking game. It deserves all of the props it gets, no doubt. In my opinion, Square Enix's zenith games are FF 6, 7, and 8.

            But that ending, ffs.

I think we're in agreement on this one! (I also really like 9 and 10, though they're not as genre-defining.)

OMG, what?! I love the ending! Bombastic ambiguity at its best, something FF (and especially FF7) does really well.

Compare said ambiguous ending with the preachy heroic ending of FFX (a game I like!), an ending that left no room for interpretation at all. No, I always loved that FF7's ending left so much open to the player's imagination.

                  I'm glad you liked it.

I'm not really a demanding lover, but I prefer it when my climaxes take longer than a couple of minutes to conclude, though.

                  Just saying.

                        Not by half.

                        FF8 has four discs.

Will FF7 remake be the first PS4 game to use 2 bluray discs?

I can't seem to remember any other ps4 games coming with two GAME discs (a game disc and a soundtrack disc, sure, but more than 1 game disc like old PC game days where the whole Neverwinter Nights collection came with 7 discs? No.)

And now for a partial non-sequitor! This is all I have to say about things Final Fantasy, at least until we hit, eh, July 6th or so:

I reluctantly draw the topic away from the beloved Final Fantasy but...

...holy shit if you love Metroidvania games, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is just an amazing game and I can not recommend it enough. And it is well worth the price point.

The game is gorgeous, the controls feel great, the music is well done.

I would say it is like comparing apples and pomegranates. The tempo, beats, and musical cues that fit the game are wholly different than those used in an RPG and so one should experience them on their own separate of the comparison to fully enjoy them.

Well, are you surprised? The game is getting good hype so of course someone will have to come out of the woodwork and claim it is racist and offensive. Really, I am not surprised by this. Mike's responses though to this, particularly to people on Twitter, have been pretty perfect.
