@Admiral — Octopath Traveler is one of the best-written classic-style JRPGs I've seen in ages, one of the most visually striking, and also one of the least forgiving (especially given the frequency of random encounters on average). It's been a while since I played a game that only let you save at actual specific save-points!

@Sparks When does it get hard? I haven't had any difficulty whatsoever yet and I'm a few hours in.

@Admiral - To be fair, I had different levels of difficulty getting out into the world from the starting zone depending on which character I started a game with. Some of them aren't a great solo character to make your way through the wilds with, which was the part that sometimes felt punishing.

@Sparks Oh that makes sense. I started with the Merchant, so I suppose that was easy mode?

Maybe Sword and Shield will prompt PokeMU to get up and running. I'm all here for the @digging (after I take a crash course in how to do that again) and world building and such. Whee!

I should also get switch codes and the like, for all that sweet, sweet trading. Later. Probably.

If this article I just read is true, then Gearbox is doing something smooth as Hell for Borderlands 3.

Borderlands 2 was released in 2012. Borderlands 3, the chronological sequel, is getting relased in 2019.

Would it be slick as Hell to release a FREE DLC for a 7 year old game across all platforms? A FREE DLC for all that will be a connecting piece between Borderlands 2 and 3?

Yeah, IMO that would be PR/fan service gold.

                  Leaked Borderlands 2 Free DLC Pre-Borderlands 3

Delete the Hog Pit. It'll be fun.

So, Octopath Traveller. I'm usually not a stickler for graphics, but paying full 60$ price for a game that looks on par with SNES Final Fantasy 6 is kinda making me go ehhhh.

Is this the greatest RPG ever story and mechanics wise (I have trouble imagining how much one can do with turn-based rpg combat) or something?

What is justifying it being full price?

(Also, how similar is this to Saga Frontier? I loved that game.)

On the matter of pokemon, I just got my switch a couple weeks ago and I'll prooobably wind up getting pokemon when it comes out, but since I haven't played since like..Ruby(?), I have some questions.

First, I will probably always have a soft spot for the gen 1 pokemon. Vulpix, Growlithe, Krabby, Jolteon, Abra, etcetc. I'm sure some of the new critters will grow on me, buuut....

Is it even possible to get old pokemon still in the newer games? If they are...Are they actually catchable in the game, or would you have to like...trade them across 7 different pokemon games/systems to get from gen 2 to gen 6?

(Tangent, related question, if there are more than just 'current gen' wouldn't that mean they'd have to have images/etc built into the game for EVERY POKEMON EVER? That seems like a lot.)

Second question, if you bought both versions (Sword and Shield) would you be able to trade to yourself, or would you also need a 2nd Switch from somewhere?

@Tempest That's what turned me off, too. There's this whole 'retro pixelated 8-bit look' many A-list (and priced) games seem to be going for these days I'm really not into.

It has pretty much become accepted among gamers that console games will always tread the full price mark and lack the fluidity of pricing that PC games have due to things like that.

Since this originally came out for the Switch, it would be no different. Now that it is going to be released on PC, it might be best to get the game then because you can wait for the best sale price on it to get it at a cost more equitable to what you consider the price range the game should fall into.

Given a look at it myself I'm thinking the $15-25 range is probably fair, but I would not pay any higher than $25.

Console games have that markup due to delivery styles as well. Until they adopt a more common online distribution. Your paying for the packaging and etc that we don't pay for on steam or the like.

That said. Holy shit it's expensive for something that looks like it was made with rpgmaker

It's worth noting that Octopath Traveler's use of 3d makes it feel visually very different in play than an old school SNES game. There actually something quite beautiful about the way it looks in motion, and I think it's almost more because of the pixelated retro textures than despite them. It's the best example of HD-2D I've seen, I think.

It is also multiple RPGs kind of smashed together. Each party member really has their own entire storyline; you pick one to start with, but as you travel the world you will gradually find the other characters and thus can also play their stories, their own arcs. Only once you've done all those stories can you start to see the common threads that tie all eight travelers together, and what the story that will affect all of them is... and then resolve that one.

I tried with the remastered version, dammit, but whatever rose-colored glasses I was wearing weren't enough for the shock of what these graphics look like to my 2018+ eyes.
