@lithium
Which one are you having problems with. We, the collective playing the game that is, might have some recommendations for you. -
@jaded The one with the ammo dumps you have to guard and there is turrets and 8 mechs of varrying sizes from heavy to light and you have to capture the ammo for the side you're fighting for.
I am running two shadow hawks, a trebuchet, and a jenner for it because I need the speed to make sure the ammo trucks don't get away because I like to complete every objective.
I really think I am just severely out tonned in this one and need to get bigger mechs.
-
@lithium
You are yes. I found it near impossible to actually get the first ammo truck that makes a run for it without getting any mech out into the field of fire and letting it get hammered by all of the things that could shoot at it, which were many.I would recommend going to another planet and doing a few of the 2.5 skull missions and see about getting a heavy mech at least to throw into your lance. At that level if you can find missions that have you hunting to assassinate a target or pick off a single mech, those tend to be heavies and you can work them to get them as salvage.
-
Yeah I was clearing 2 skulls pretty easily and this was a 2 skull mission supposedly. Oof. I like having the Jenner cuz it can go stomp the trucks but geesh.
-
I'm enjoying Battletech very much, but I find that I can only play one or two missions before needing a break. This is much better than Frostpunk's constant realtime style.
I also like how Battletech makes the main plot epic, but then gives you room to explore after the two or three intro missions. There was a space game called Escape Velocity, a 2D space piloting/trading game in the realm of Elite: Dangerous, and for 2002 it was fantastic for just how many threads you could follow (three major plots each with their own interacting mini-plots), but it was easy to pick up and easy to put down.
I'm getting this same feeling from Battletech. Not the threads, but the ease of getting into.
I don't know if Harebrained Schemes knocked it out of the park, but they've shown us that they not only know how to story, but they can consistently make solid and engaging games.
Can't wait
for more Shadowruner, to see what they do next. -
@lithium Youch, when I ran that mission I had a Grasshopper, a Catapult, a Thunderbolt and a Jaegermech and it was still not a fun time. I essentially had the Grasshopper jumpjet off to melt the escaping trucks whilst everyone else engaged in fight time with the swarming enemy mechs.
Even so I still ended up blowing one of the ammo crates after I saw that four enemies were clustered around it. Eight mechs plus turrets AND the side objective leading to arguably my best mech off chasing vehicles was getting messy.
To add - I got a bunch of heavy mechs early by hunting for those missions where you have to fight 'old guard' or whatever, that tends to send you up against a lance of heavies with half armour, so I took lots of flamethrowers to cook the pilots out and steal their big mechs. Or shot off side torsos before pushing them over with volleys of LRMs. It was absolutely worth taking damage or even losing mechs in order to salvage 65 ton heavies.
-
@lithium
Yeah if you're going to run a light mech, right now the Spider or Panther is the best bet over the Jenner. The Spider for its speed and the Panther because it can jumpjet around and plink things with its PPC. -
I'm not that far into Battletech. I decided to start over.
I just got my first heavy from doing a story mission. Woo, Dragon.
Can I load it with nothing but flamethrowers and jump jets? Because dragons breathe fire and fly right?
-
@admiral
You can build them however you’d like. Due to losing limbs and scrapping mechs together, I don’t think I have more than one that is a standard build.
I also don’t know why I would need more than five mechs and five pilots. Five story missions in and I’ve yet to be strapped for cash that I couldn’t wait a month to let everyone heal.
-
I know it's childish, but I always get a little giggly when I blow off a mech's main weapon. I hear Bruce Willis in my head, from Sin City.
"I take away his weapons. Both of them."
-
@thenomain That depends on how many mechs you have active, how fast you upgrade stuff, and how many pilots you've got. I need 8 pilots, I get wounded pilots all the time, mechs get smacked and need repaired. I am running ragged edge but damn my Argo is fly.
-
The key thing with dragons is that they are as fast as a a big medium, say a Shadowhawk, and slightly more punchy.
But they are that fast due to having a big engine which means they cannot really mount any more weapons than a medium mech.
Personally I figure this means you should capitalise on the punch factor and point blank range and use them as melee brawlers if you use them at all. Jumpjets and flamethrowers is thus actually a pretty good combination!
-
@packrat I actually use Dragons as mobile snipers.

Five.
how fast you upgrade stuff
Eh.
and how many pilots you've got
Five.

I found by mid game that I was running 7-8 pilots and mechs, it costs a little more but the ability to go straight into missions without waiting if you get something shot up or a pilot put out of action for a few weeks is more than worth it.
Also, crucially, it means you have trained up replacements for if some asshole in a walking center torso does a Death From Above and smashes the head of an untouched heavy mech, taking a highly skilled mechwarrior to the grave in the process.

@admiral
Well if its successful that is the end result... -
@admiral
Death From Above, an insanely dangerous Mech maneuver where you drop your Mech onto another. A good way to lose leg structure.
I’ve not been paying too much attention to armor and weapon damage, but you only need to see it in action once to know how terrible and terrifying it can be.

Anybody else obsessing over OWL(Overwatch World League), or is it just me and @Sonder ?
