Direct quote from the developers. The Qun is meant to be the Islam analogue, in a rough way.

Aint nothing wrong with Islam. There are plenty of recorded Islamic empires in history with similar mindsets.

Bear in mind, no one said there's anything NEGATIVE about the Qun. It's a mindset, a religion, a race of people. It's no more offensive than noting the Jedi Order was influenced by Buddhism/Hinduism/the Samurai

Popped in just out of curiosity (not going to play with those major characters as PCs). What the hell code base is that? It's horrible. MOO?

That's fine, but it's not even close. As I said, the mindset of assimilation is very close to how Islamic regimes operated in the Middle Ages, but the idea of "everyone to their role" is closer to Stalinist communism.

@Thenomain I always saw it as having more in common with extremes in Theravada Buddhism or Hinduism if we must make a religious analogue. Individuals are encouraged to separate themselves from desire and are locked into a caste (admittedly through evaluation than through birth). If we are speaking of governments I am inclined to see it as communist as Ganymede said or perhaps Qin legalist. The developers can "say" its Islam, but really the only thing that matches up is the idea of Exalted March as Crusades and the Qunari on a form of Jihad. So I'd be inclined to say they just called it Islam because the Chantry is a Catholic Church expy, but the Qun has little in common with the Islamic Caliphates.

And the Martin Luther analogue uses explosives instead of nailing beliefs to the door, and doesn't start a war of just the spirit. I understand what you're saying, but I don't know how that changes anything. The Europe analogue is upside-down (hotter being north). The Inquisition isn't the Inquisition. The Church started in France by a woman who freed slaves from the Ancient Roman analogue. Most of this isn't perfect, and isn't supposed to be.

I don't know what any of this has to do with the price of tea in Navarra.

                    @Akurel

It may be. A lot of Dragon Age is a pastiche (hah!) of European history thrown through Fantasy's blender and topped with a dollop of modernistic sensibilities.

@Thenomain Perhaps this thread needs a drinking game for when anyone uses the word pastiche.

Noooo. Someone be smart enough not to do this! I would love to dick around in a Thedas setting. Just, not with a bunch of canon characters.

@Kanye-Qwest The events of DA:Inquisition would actually be a decent in game canon setting to do it in. Have the players app in as those agents performing all of those war table missions or the ones that never hit the table. Other interesting time periods or settings (for me at least) would be the Ferelden War of Independence or a Game of Dwarves. Or hell, be mercs running around the Free Marches.

On the note about canon characters I can tolerate them. I understand the appeal, but would never want to play one.

I just want to get an idea on how likely it is that IF I play, that my char would just be supporting cast to canon character PCs.

Any players wanna weigh in on this? I would prefer to look before I leap.

The King and Queen of Ferelden are listed as PCs along with all the other major characters from the games. Take it as you will.

Smoke and Shadow also did/does the FC thing. I don't understand the trend, but apparently its a thing.

                                    Pass.

9/10 times games have canon characters in ICly ranking roles, they are divvied up amongst staff or friends of staff, and the rp circulates around their inner circle.

Not only that, but a glance at the site indicates Anders is chillin in Skyhold? With Cassandra? And I guess she hasn't broken him in half and tossed him over the wall for Reasons. If you are going to insist on playing canon characters, play them.

I wondered about that myself. Seems Anders was separated from Justice and pardoned.

If this isn't all but proof that staff are making a game to play their favorite characters and little other reason, I don't know what is.

Wasn't someone a few months ago plotting out a Witcher-themed game? Between that idea, the recent Black Company thread, and broad interest in Dragon Age, it seems like someone needs to respond to the exigence for a gritty fantasy game...
