Back in the day, we had an excellent Wing Commander MUSH, called Red Horizon, that focused on the ship and ground combat. A colleague and friend of mine, 'Alty', once tried to create a Halo MUSH, but couldn't get a project staff together.

I actually have a system to create a coded thematic implement for a Halo MUSH, saved as a text file. I like to view it as a sci-fi version of Elendor's Mordor theme. If anyone wants the file, I'm cherry to give it up.

Ah Red Horizon -- Now that was a game where I was afraid to not log on for a day because shit was always happening.

Speaking of things with "Horizon" in the name, Horizon: Zero Dawn MU*. Add some MUD elements with the exploration and hunting. MUSH elements with building villages. You have survival elements and a pretty flexible metaplot to work with.

Lords and ladies political MU set in the Nine Hells.

Tons of TS, death, reincarnation, betrayal, and the antagonists are like angels and heroes of destiny from the mortal world, and other crazy shit.

God I want this game so bad and I know no one would play it if I made it.

@Chet WC:RH was the shit. My all-time favorite MUSH.
@BobGoblin : You are not wrong. Shit was going down so much on that game, it was ridiculous.

That's actually some of what I miss at times. I know in my logical mind that with RL, family, etc I can't have those 'glory days' of constant chaos happening and that it's very rose tinted glasses.

But there was a time where there were games that shit was always going down it seemed. WC:RH, Star Wars: Dark Horizons (irony there). Those 90's Star Trek games too, like Strange New Worlds, ATS... there wasn't this 'wait for staff to run something' mentality.

Which leads back to; there's a lot of great settings out there. But the problem is it requires people to run and babysit.

@BobGoblin Haha, the now classic 'OOC Waiting Room for plots' method instead of players investing into things going on grid-side.

My extremely short time on Arx was filled with grid-side RP/plotting/whatever-ness. I was very happy with it. Some with Dystopia while it was around (I think that was the name).

Dystopia was pretty awesome. I feel like it opened sooner that it should have though. And then nothing ever really had time to 'get rolling' before it died. A bit more 'hand-fed plot' at the start would've potentially nudged things along until players/factions could sustain ongoing plot themselves.

The only real plot that popped up was Dildo Fest, afaik.

Another property where I love the concept but I'm not a huge fan of the system; the Strange.

@HelloProject I actually had a project like that I never got to finish. But I'll describe the concept if you want a slice of any of the material.

You have Hell, with Seven Patrons, based on the Seven Deadly Sins (Reference a guy named Peter Binsfeld, he's a Catholic witch hunter and theologian, Wikipedia has the basic list of the demons, you can do deeper research from there). The Seven Patrons are NPCs controlled by staff, and the politics of the MUSH is about the Seven Patrons vying over Hell, with each PC falling via a Mortal Sin that makes them beholden to one of each Patron. The Mortal Sin is listed on the +finger, as important as Quote and Profile.

You have them start as Sinners, and if they advance (through however you want to do it), they can become Demons. Alternately, you can have them attempt to Atone for their Mortal Sin (by however mechanism you deem fit), and escape Hell.

The key would be the goal of politics. You could possibly have them influence the Mortal World, master various forms of magick, court the older demons for extra power (an artifice system, perhaps, where Pledging yourself to a Demon with a higher rank granted both of you power), or maybe even the old fashion armies of Hell battling back and forth.

@HelloProject @Chet You would be surprised. I would play there. I was bandying about a similar idea; though, I had the Princes of Hell as PCs with an emphasis on frequent turnover (it's the crazy, intrigue-y, back-stab filled politics of Hell after all, so being at the top has a huge target on it.) I sort of hoped that since the setting was Hell, people would be more willing to be cutthroat with one another. The idea eventually morphed into an island world setting with the politics centered in pseudo-Rome, because I wanted to incorporate some thematic elements from Dune and economics.

@Tempest I liked Dystopia too and was sad to see it go. I reached out to see if I could review some of the mechanics they had, because I want to steal some of them for a Gilded Age Western in Spaaace game with elements from the cyberpunk genera, Tales of the Borderlands, and Offworld Trading Company.

@Ominous You can use economics in a Hell based setting. You should read Fiendish Codex II.

@HelloProject A different kind of economics, one not based on larvae or whatever souls are called in D&D's hells. 😛

Basically, I took a space-like setting and transplanted in a fantasy setting, using sea travel and islands instead of space travel and planets. It tightens the scale of things, while still allowing for distinct land masses with easy borders to be claimed as territory. I felt it was cleaner and easier to work with for a MU*, since it doesn't have the graphical interface of a strategy game.

@The-Sands The Strange and Numenera are pretty interesting. The Cypher system overall, I guess.

Another system I have been looking at is Degenesis. Not a whole lot has been put out since 2015, but what they do have is pretty nifty.

The Cypher System would be a great system to have fully coded stuff for (except Cyphers themselves, which are too varied). Unfortunately, the game would have to be extra clandestine, as the company is super strict about MUs using their rules.

"Excuse the hell out of you. He's a bag of dicks. I'm a carefully curated box of cocks." -- to @GirlCalledBlu upon being misrepresented.

The cypher system is interesting to me. while i am not sure I would ever run it in table top, I do think it would be interesting to see in action on a MUSH.

Another EuroRPG that is nifty and would be a great MU basis is 'Shadows of Esteren' Dark medieval fantasy game with haunted woods and a 'nature magic vs. techno-magic' theme. Most of the websites for it are in French, but it's a very beautiful game world.
