@thatguythere So I think it's really about the fact that the community exists but you personally don't engage with
Isn't that pretty much the same as my initial statement of "to me this place is not a community". You all can have all the community you want just don't expect me to call it that or care about that aspect.

@thatguythere What you are describing definitely exists in gaming. The transitory nature which makes interaction past the point of 'well, we're playing right now' irrelevant, or even inefficient, is there; I join 5-man groups on WoW all the time, and I don't care who these other 4 people are. I look at their gear to make sure they can pull off the run, but they don't even have names to me; there's a DK tank. If I need to refer to him, that's how I do it: "Hey, tank, nice job!".
Yet in this hobby there are people I haven't played with in years I interact with regularly on MSB. Hell there are people who haven't played in years, period, but who might come back. What's even more important is they do - many of us, myself included, took years-long hiatus and returned, only to find they still had roots around and others remembered them.
That's how it is. In one game I don't even remember you while we're actually still playing, and in another you are a person to me, and I have memories of you.
Your reputation matters, too; that DK tank might be bad (I mean, he's a DK, come on) but it's not like if we group up the week after I'd recognize him. But here, look at our threads... we have long memories. Sometimes for the worse things we did but often for being cool, too. There are folks I'd play with in a second if our paths crossed again, and I'd make no secret of it when I introduced them to others.
I mean your perspective might differ, but I feel community isn't merely important, it's what's keeping me MU*ing.

There's a difference between "there's a community but I'm not interested in engaging in it" and "there's not a community." Your posts have sounded a lot like the latter. If that's not what you meant, then it's just a miscommunication.

What i was saying is that the community doesn't exist to me, whether it exists to others only matters to me in so far as how it effects me.
The Ron Swanson quote above pretty much sums up my thoughts about most things.
Though my personal version is more along the lines of, "Harm no one else, do what you want, don't expect me to care."
I don't mean this in a negative way but in a neutral one. -
@thatguythere I mean this in the nicest way, I really do... but what are you doing here?

If you mean the board as a whole, I am here to argue/chat/theorycraft about games. Posts in non-game threads are mostly asides because like most conversations topics wander around. I am on discussion boards about other topics that interest me as well such as pro wrestling, comic books, sports, and Big Brother (the reality tv show not the Orwellian idea) (Note I don't consider any of those place communities either)
If you mean this thread, it is a thread that has a strong potential to impact my purpose for being on the board as a whole as stated above.

No, that's what I meant. You are here over a long period of time arguing/debating games and other stuff with us. Stuff that interest us, and which interest you, and in the process you keep running into the same people over and over to do it. You might even remember some of us from past interactions with you - we do.
I hate to break this to you man, but whether you like it or not... you're part of what we call a 'community'. Welcome!
-
I’m not against people replying to something to say “I️ don’t agree”. Especially if they feel that if they don’t make their stance known then they would risk being misrepresented. This is a lot of the thread derails that I️ see.
Fucking hell, Apple. Well you get the idea. My objection is essentially telling someone that their ideas are bad and they should feel bad goes against the concept of civility that some of us would like to see more of.
Your response? Absolutely civil. Whether or not it was kind is not the point in any of this; it held consideration toward the topic and respect for Faraday as a human being, even if a human being you strongly disagree with.

Not that I am going anywhere unless told to but I have never read anything before this that made me consider not posting here.
You randos keep your community to yourselves. -
@thatguythere Says the guy with almost 2,500 comments here.

I really like to argue. I have never disputed that, nor would anyone here.
-
@thatguythere Sure, but to do that while trying to act like you're just some occasional visitor who has no real connection to anyone else here is not exactly believable. You may like telling yourself that for whatever reasons you have, but it doesn't mesh with reality.
Face it, man: you're a part of this.

When did I say I was an occasional visitor? I am here most days, a lot of days I check in multiple times. I will not claim I don't spend a shit ton of time here.
In the thread with the detestably sexist name that is now locked in the Hogpit, @auspice posted a definition of community that included the phrase Positive feeling, which are absent here. And while that definition is not completely in agreement with mine it makes a good starting point.
For me it is more a familiarity thing.
For example, I could not tell you one thing about yourself, literally nothing pops into my head at seeing the name Wolfs, for Roz the only thing I got is likes transformers games and ran/runs Transformers Lost and Found. For some others I could name more things but I doubt there is a single person here I know more than a paragraph of information about. If that is the bar you set for what makes a community it becomes a meaningless distinction. -
@thatguythere One of us, one of us.
-
@thatguythere I guess, I mainly don't get what the point is of trying to deny that you're a part of the place as more than just some outsider - and that's an example you tried to make yourself. It really isn't even up for debate that there is a community feel for a lot of people here, and it exists whether you're willing to accept it or not.
You may choose to stay more on the periphery and just argue and debate or whatever, while coming to know a few things about some of the people you interact with, but it's pretty clear to me there are people here who are friends whether it's just here, via games, IRL in some cases, and so on.
-
Damn dude, you've got 1000+ more posts than me.

Whether there is a community is a fact question, not an opinion question. There is a community. It is present.
Whether you are part of this community is also a fact question, not an opinion question. You are. Thousands of posts. Empirical evidence. We are all familiar with you. We are even familiar with this argument about how this isn't a community because this is not the first time we have had this conversation.
Whether you intend on engaging in this community or whether you like being a part of this community or whether you like the community are all opinion questions about which your opinion matters, and you are free to have those opinions about no and no, and no; it doesn't change the facts.
This confusion between opinion and fact grows more and more prevalent these days but it doesn't actually change the true relationship between opinion and fact.
