Maybe we're all getting old and cranky!
Maybe?
Well, there's an alternative to both states.

There is snow on my car.
It is April 30th.
-
@silverfox Yup. That was us two days ago. After i planted my garden. I was out hastily putting blankets over the soil to protect the new shoots.
-
I watched one of my coworkers try to choke down a bowl of cauliflower "fried rice" today for her lunch. She is going keto and was interested in talking about it (and I don't mind talking about food like ever, so win!). Someone had told her that cauliflower is "bland" and so that's why you can substitute it in things. I have never understood that at all--to me it has a very strong distinctive taste (that I LOVE so even though I'm fat I will eat your cauliflower crust pizza and riced cauliflower because I love it and it's yummy!). I wish people would stop telling people that they won't taste the difference or somehow riced cauliflower can be substituted for rice. It really can't! That's just setting people up to fail, or to be upset about their food and disappointed to have something for lunch that they don't enjoy at all.
-
You HAVE to cook cauliflower right. It took hubs and I several cauliflower crusts before we found a good one. (Sprouts brand idly.)
-
@silverfox It all tastes good to me. but i am pretty sure there isnt really a way to make cauliflower taste like mashed potatoes, or to make it taste like bread.
-
@mietze Remind me to send you the recipe my mother uses for it. IIRC it's fairly simple, mostly just cauliflower, a few bread crumbs, and a small amount of butter, but however she does it, it comes out tastyface in ways even my cauliflower-hating husband loves. (He cringes as I just chow down on it raw.) She's made it since I was a kid and it was one of the few veggies even this fussychild never minded (and instead loved) eating.
-
@mietze There isn't because cauliflower will always lack a critical ingredient as a bread replacement. No yeast. Yeast is what tend to give bread its flavor (not always, but often). And cauliflower won't have that. Which isn't to say that one can't enjoy cauliflower that's been riced or mashed or made into a crust (I happen to fall towards your end of the spectrum where cauliflower is just damn tasty), but if you go into it expecting that familiar 'bread' taste... disappointment awaits.
-
As someone who digs in rice, I find it not bland at all. I rather like the taste. Itās just that most white people donāt know how to prepare it in a tasty way.
As someone who digs on cauliflower, I also donāt find it bland if prepared.
As someone that digs in the keto diet, anyone who tells you that the food doesnāt taste good or is without flavor is probably a white woman named Karen.
Iām sure Wretched and I could create a keto cookbook thread that would be boss.
-
@Ganymede I know that eating keto can taste great, I've done it. I also love cauliflower everything. I also agree that rice isnt bland and I do not understand why people insist that it is.
However, I have noticed a lot of people who have this mentality of "I want a substitute for rice/crusty bread/potatoes/beans," ect. I feel that really sets people up. There really isnt a substitute for a loaf of sourdough bread I've just pulled out of the oven, but I can def. think of a few replacements that I enjoy!

I hear you. And, yeah, I guess it is kind of deceptive to suggest to someone that Substitute Food will taste the same as Desired Food. But it's hard to convince someone to get onto a diet that may help them by telling them: "Look, buddy, you need to stop eating the stuff you love and start eating different shit before you die." Maybe the lie can be helpful too.
That said, keto isn't a great long term solution, and it isn't a panacea. Diet with caution.

This is pretty heavy for a peeve, but it isn't anger, so, well, it's here. (It may be anger so vast I just can't see the size of it right now.)
I try. Laugh if you want, roll your eyes all you want, but that doesn't make it untrue. Typically, I try really hard.
And it's really just not making any difference any more.
Over the past few years, it's become increasingly apparent to me that while I'm expected to consider every possible aspect of the feelings of others, mine are rarely considered. I'm going to tuck in a thank you here for the folks who are the exception to that rule, even if it is something as simple as 'please don't call me dude'. I appreciate that, y'all. I actually do. It's good of you, and it speaks well of you.
It's that most of the world just isn't like that, even when it comes to the big stuff, or the actually important stuff, so while I still try to keep those things in mind re: others, to the best of my ability -- everyone, including me, fucks that up sometimes, but I actually feel bad when I do -- some of the people who have been closest to me in my life pretty much don't seem to have a single fuck left to give.
So, Tempest & co., bring on the mockery that surr's whining again, I guess. I expect nothing else from you; it doesn't even bother me any more.
RL-wise, I'm staring down the barrel of something scary on a number of levels. (Yeah, the dental crap.) By the time all is said and done it will be over $66k. We make $24k/year. (Go ahead and mock us for being poors, too, if it strikes your fancy.) I haven't been able to eat much of anything since this started; people talk about 'dental death' being a reality for animals and ancient humans and it sounds like something that is weird or impossible, but, hey, I totally grok that shit now; if you can't eat, you can't eat. It's all going to cost a small fortune, to the extent I don't sleep at night any more because the anxiety over it all keeps me from sleeping at all, and no amount of Xanax in the world makes a damned bit of difference.
And it could all still go wrong, and it could all still fail. Someone I previously trusted pulled a bit of underhanded double-standard bullshit last night and then threw in a dig about that just to be vicious and ugly and compound the hurt they were intentionally causing.
On my desktop is a pro and con list, very seriously considered, no matter how stupid y'all may feel it may be, re: 'should I just quietly kill myself and spare my family this expense over something that may not even work', and it isn't a joke, just as this isn't some plea for sympathy or back-pats. (Like, please don't?) This is my parents giving up all of their happy things in retirement plans. This is me and my husband going into long-term debt we can't possibly afford. This is me not being able to afford the supplies to do the job I've done since I was in gradeschool, let alone build up toward the new one I've spent time and energy working toward. This is no more dinners out, or movies, and the only reason we're still doing this year's vacation is because we had to pre-pay a year in advance before all of this happened, and it's going to be the last one we ever take. (Winning lottery ticket, now's the time?) There are reasons, and there is knowing I'm not a useful person (and this is like GoT's Wall in the way of becoming one), and there is knowing my family truly deserves better than all of that. So, there's kinda no not at least thinking about it.
24 hours ago, I had two close friends outside my family. I have one now, and 24 hours from now, I probably won't have that one, either. (Preen and smug about it if you want, consider it your proof of what a horrible shit-pile of a human being I am if it tickles your fancy.)
Shit is only going to get worse from here, whether it's for a while, or permanently (and no I don't mean 'dun dun dun FATALITY' there). I have no idea which it's going to be yet.
Whichever it ultimately is, it's not a good time for me to be around here, much as I do enjoy this place and the vast majority of the people here. I make a point of not logging into games when shit gets bad, and it's pretty stupid of me to have not included MSB under that umbrella as well until now -- which I've kinda proven repeatedly and in spectacular fashion, and don't want to do again. The 'games don't deserve to deal with me when I'm like this' always made sense, and frankly, y'all are the same crowd and even if not, y'all don't deserve it, either.
So, uh. Be good to each other, folks. I'll pop back in when I have a hope in hell of keeping my shit together.

Sorry to hear that your RL is still going all to crap.
-
@surreality Good luck getting your life sorted out.

If there's one bit of advice I can offer it's this: Stop doing that. You can't face problems if all you see in front of you are people mocking you for trying. Deal with the issue(s), not the people.
-
@surreality ā I'm sorry life's not going well for you; the situation sounds horrible.
As for the 'bring on the mockery', though? I definitely don't always agree with you in discussions on here, but I wouldn't think anyone would mock you over RL misfortunes or a lack of income. Sure, people on MSB verbally spar and talk trash with each otherāand mock each other over game-related thingsābut despite how you doubtless feel at the moment, I don't think anyone here wishes actual physical harm or financial misfortune on their fellow posters or would take glee in it.
(At least I sure as heck hope not; if people are wishing that level of RL harm on each other over pretendy fun-times internet game discussions, I'm genuinely concerned about people's priorities.)
There's lots of other things I could try to say here, but you've asked not to be showered in sympathy, and I can understand that; sometimes receiving sympathy only makes everything feel worse. And even when they are a comfort, words very rarely change anything substantial about a situation like this.
I will instead just say that this is yet another example of how unbelievably sucktastic it is that our country is in a place where not only do many people live close to the edge financially, but where even people who have enough to be comfortable can lose that cushionāand sometimes everything elseāwith one unlucky medical bill. It is fundamentally wrong that people routinely need to set up GoFundMe's to make medical bills, or keep a beloved pet alive after an injury; our safety net should not have to be "the kindness of internet strangers".
I hope things do work out for you. That treatment for the dental situation is successful. That the financial situation ends up being at least partially alleviated, by whatever meansāeven if it ends up being the aforementioned kindness of internet strangers through a GoFundMe or somethingāand life can go on. That eventually this can all be a horrible story that fades to an anecdote you can share with people someday, down the road. I know things often don't work out that way for people, but I can still hope.
And when you're ready to come back I'm sure people will still be here, prepared to argue vehemently over the merits and flaws of different approaches to pretendy fun-time internet games. Because as weird and loud and combative as corners of this place often are, it is still a community, and it'll be waiting when you return.
(Well, short of the server melting, a nuclear winter that takes down the internet, alien invasion, or something similar.)
