Yeah, or more nefarious or pessimistic, could it truly be that people may be unwilling to pay restaurants more because having control over the tip makes the food cheaper for the diner and gives them more control over the performance of the serving staff?

Here's an alternate view, sort of.

Could it be that dispossessed, entitled diners with a modicum of "self-motivated" success prefer exerting control over others who they see as undeserving of payment for their labor?

Said another way, could people who otherwise have little actual control over their success want to punish people for being inconvenienced or slighted, thus assuaging the "successful" personas they need to bolster their egos?

Said yet another way, could it be possible that people are petty tyrants in their minds and little shits in their behavior?

Thankfully, the service at the In-n-Out I go to has been fantastic every time.

...tho I'd prob still go regardless. Cuz In-n-Out.

          Possibly.
One of the last times I went to a buffet (I just can't eat enough in one sitting to justify the time/money/effort anymore), I remember overhearing a guy at another table justifying not leaving a tip to his family (I could tell his wife and his mother or mother-in-law were flabbergasted): "I've got to put gas in my car, so they can deal!"

Well, buddy, maybe you shouldn't have gone out to dinner if you couldn't afford both!

Also reminds me of the time I was sitting and waiting for my ex-husband to get off of work (he worked at an Applebees at the time) wherein I witnessed a man run back in after his wife dragged him out in her snooty snitfit over refusing to leave a tip. He'd feigned forgetting his hat........ all so he could come back and leave a generous tip, apologizing for her all the while.

I mean. Tipping culture is horrible bullshit and its roots are extremely racist. I'd much rather people be paid a living wage for their work, but I'd also rather we not be murdering the planet and that people had to test regularly to be able to give their opinions outside clearly delineated playpens. Wish in one hand...

The ones that get me are the ones who write a $0 tip receipt with a note that their tip will be donated to Jesus.

When I was in the US I was told that it's apparently better to write a zero dollar tip receipt and just give your server, or whomever, cash. Due to taxes, or somesuch. Is there any truth to that idea?

This may be happening, but this will lead to cheating the restaurant, not the government of its taxes.

@Tinuviel yes, because CC tips are easier to audit. If you tip in cash, servers can under report their earnings for their income tax. Which yes, fine, illegal, but our entire economy should be illegal.

I'm just not at a point in my life where I can reliably carry cash. I'm busy, ok?

I'm in the card payments industry. Kinda went on detail previous page.

                        Hierarchy should be:

Cash > Credit with 20% tip or less > Credit with 20% or under tip and over 20% is cash > Credit with tip over 20%

Ive started putting cash in a 'tip box' at my house, for when i order food or weed.

Most food apps at least have a tipping option (Uber eats gives it to you after your food is delivered, which I like, less pressure)

My weed delivery service (eaze.com) has no built in tipping thing, and delivery people hussle in thier own way, either mention ing venmo, or 'tips welcome' in their 'your delivery in on the way' messages. I feel awkward if I dont have cash. One time i handed them like 7 bucks in Dollar Coins i got from change at a lightrail ticket thing, because i had no other money. The order was 130 bucks, I had 7 dollars in coins. They were cool about it but man, I wanna give more. Because Delivery drivers barely get shit, and are dicked around by who they work for a lot.

                            Email from recruiter.
Subject line includes 'Long term contract'

In the body of the email, under 'Duration' ...... '6-12 months'

MOTHERFUCKER IN WHAT UNIVERSE IS THAT LONG TERM?!

                                        Today was decidedly unfun.

                                        I'm glad it's over.
