@Seamus
I'm sorry @Auspice but I really don't think they told them wrong. Faraday is real quick to say "no" to anything she doesn't agree with. And as you said, it's her right. But warning someone... That's a good thing too. I've contributed a "Dark Skin" for Ares.
This is bullshit.
I don't usually engage in this sort of stuff, but this is BULLSHIT.
Faraday is hands down the most patient, level headed person I think I've ever seen. I have seen her say no, firmly. I've also seen her spend a GREAT DEAL OF TIME explaining why she's saying no, what her philosophy is, and why it doesn't fit within that philosophy. Patiently. Clearly. Politely.
Including to you.
She's also spent a ton (and I mean a TON) of time helping me implement things that are never going to touch Ares core - some of which she doesn't particularly love philosophically. At least one of these things is now up as an Ares Extra for others who want to implement it.
Faraday is not only open to people modifying the server, but she actively supports it. I would not be half the ruby coder I am (whatever that is) without her continued patience and help.
I've also witnessed people being incredibly rude in the face of her helpfulness and generosity. Repeatedly. And it's bullshit, too.
-
I went through the last year of posts to the Aresmush forum discussion and I couldn't see Faraday giving a rude response to anyone.
-
@Tat Sure. Absolutely. Faraday has done great things. And yes, she has. However, she has also been rather curt and degrading, from my POV and that of others. Your praise doesn't invalidate that. I stand by my opinion of the situation. And I chose to voice my dislike, but stopping using Ares. But... Yeah. I don't think Faraday is the Saint everyone paints her to be. YMMV.
-
@Seamus No one is making any claims that anyone is perfect. Everyone has flaws and everyone fucks up.
The appropriate response to that is to respect the good and handle the consequences for the bad.
'I don't have to respect the good because <person> isn't perfect' is utter nonsense, just like 'the bad person does cannot have any negative consequences because they did this good thing, too' is utter nonsense.
We are adults, goddammit. This is not something that should be difficult for adults to understand.
-
Yeah, no.
I disagree with Faraday about many, many things, and our philosophies of gaming are almost diametrically opposed. And I've argued quite strongly with her about those things on here, where shit tends to fly.
And she's never once been rude or aggressive in those arguments. If you managed to actually piss her off to the point of her snapping at you, I can only assume that you started calling her names or ranting about lawyers or something else completely absurd.
And - honestly? It's her project. If she has a strong vision for what she wants to see in it, then that's her goddamned right, and she doesn't owe anyone anything. I know there are things that she prefers not to actively support, codewise, but it's not like you're banned from doing it. She's just not going to do it for you. It does not, in any way, justify, excuse, or 'make understandable' any sort of harassment of her. It wouldn't even if she turned down every suggestion with a gif of someone shitting on the suggestion and an audio file of extreme flatulence for extra emphasis.

See, that I can totally 100% understand and get behind!

I don't understand when I played on an AresMUSH it prompted me if I wanted to connect a character to an AresCentral handle. If you don't do that than isn't there no privacy concern? Isn't the point of the AresCentral feature to share characters across games and allow msging and stuff?
Right, handles are completely optional. You can even have more than one if privacy is your concern. There are technical and usability reasons why handles are public, which I alluded to in the conversation I shared. Maybe I'll elaborate on that at some point for those who actually care, but right now I'm kinda exhausted.
-
If you like but an opt-in public @handle doesn't need much explanation. Especially with no requirement to link character to handle and no limit on # of handles.

If he can't be bothered to figure that out before turning into this, then perhaps he shouldn't be a MU* admin.

Man. I hate when my husband makes something and works REALLY HARD at it and I just.. don't like it.
I feel like I should be a better wife.
