One of the doctors always sends a gift for the entire office every year. It's usually food but given Covid, this year everyone got a bottle of champagne - pardon, sparkling wine since by law it can't be called champagne unless it's made in France's Champagne. Anyway, it brought to mind a fun coin fact that has always amused me since I learned it.
In the late 12th century, the county of Champagne started to hold regular fairs (markets). Like most counties/large cities back then, they minted their own coins and those of Champagne came from 2 different cities in it. Whoever designed the silver deniers in one of those cities must have had a sense of humor as the design on one side of the coin is a comb in a field.
The French word for comb is peigne. The French word for field is champ. Field - comb / champ - peigne. For the Champagne fairs.

@tnp Funny and curious. field comb-er. Wasn't that area east and northerly also where a lot of the massive field tourney's took place in the 12th century? On the scale of kilometers/miles of teams lined up for grand melee. Makes you wonder if there were lots of field combers after a tourney looking for bits and pieces to salvage. Then again, they probably weren't going for punny names.
