Solo: Bad casting choice is why I am not seeing this in theatres. I do not see Han in the actor they picked.
-
@lithium He is forever Hobie Doyle in Hail Caesar to me.
-
Deadpool 2 is worth seeing if you enjoyed the previous one. (It is definitely not for everyone.)
I didn't find it to be as unexpectedly endearing as the first, but it had some great callbacks to the previous film and it held its own. The end bits in the first credit break are well worth waiting for.
The sad thing about this particular franchise is that I don't know how it will fare over time, considering the number of pop culture references. It's likely destined to be the Aladdin of the Marvel Universe in that respect.

It's for everyone who wants to see a buff Ryan Reynolds in a wet tshirt though. >.>

@insomnia Saw it twice already.
I want to see it again :sighs:

@jibberthehut If you're okay with horror, there is always Amittyville horror too. You know, for when Deadpool 2 isn't in theatres, and not out on BluRay yet too. >.>

Liked Deadpool 2, it will always be good to the people it is good to now. Such is the way of many movies. Even look at say, Terminator. The time it is set in is foreign to younger viewers and they may have a problem getting into it.
It's actually a /rare/ movie that survives the transition of time.
Saw Infinity War finally, was pretty good, but if you haven't been caught up on /all/ the recent marvel movies, (Black Panther, Captain America Civil War, even Iron Man 3 to an extent) it might be a little jarring and create some disconnects.
(ETA) And Thor: Ragnarok, and Guardians of the Galaxy, etc.

I don't know, I felt they summarized and explained quite a bit of things pretty clearly within the movie. The things it doesn't say explicitly are things that are known even to people who didn't see the movies. Cap and Tony are at odds? Yes, we know, because Civil War was three years ago and everyone remembers the promos even if they didn't see the movie.

This looks good.

I agree, it looks good. The plot seems to be fairly by the numbers, though. But you don't really go to that kind of movie for anything but the visuals, lol.
-
@coin I haven't read the books so I don't know how interesting the source material is. But Peter Jackson seems to go either way... either he's inspired to greatness or he gets distracted to visual oblivion.

At least he has four books to work with...
... that means we'll get anywhere from 4-12 movies!

My review of Ocean's 8:
Stuff happens. You won't be bored enough to fall asleep. You might forget the movie by the time you hit the parking lot.

Meh. Just like Ghostbusters, if this doesn't do well it will be attributed to something about all-female main casts as opposed to it being a bad movie.
-
@arkandel That is something that bothers me. There are so many phenomenal actresses out there.
There are so many great stories they could tell with them...
But what do they do? Ghostbusters... but with WOMEN!
Ocean's Eleven... but with WOMEN!
The irony that I get shouted at by some women I know for disparaging these sort of films disappoints me, like when I see poor people vote Republican.

Even so, do these things. I'd watch the hell out of a new good Ghostbusters no matter who the cast is.
Just make it good, dammit.
And the problem here isn't that they made a bad movie - tons of them are made every year. It's that it will be framed in a particular way - it's just how Hollywood works. Do they make Batman and Robin and it bombs? "It's superhero fatigue" versus "it was a shitty film". I can even place Solo in that category without even having seen it - "too many Star Wars movies" as opposed to "this latest Star Wars movie was bad".
Now the same thing will be said - gently, given the current political climate, but it will be - for female casts.
-
Most of the criticisms I've read of Ocean's 8 have centered on the direction. The 00s movies were triumphs of how to make a movie FEEL fun. Really wish Soderbergh had come back for this but, alas. It'll still get my money. I'll forgive much in a fun heist caper.
-
@arkandel
Yeah and objectively, it is a bad movie. The actresses are fantastic actresses. Even a few standouts were better than others. But the movie was just so very flat and it didn't go anywhere with its story beyond the predictable. -

Sure, if you keep an eye on the blockbusters it will look like women are not getting plum roles in excellent films, but if you keep your eye on excellent films I think you'll find that fine actresses are getting great roles. Laurie Metcalf and Allison Janney were spectacular last year.

Annihilation, aka 'a Hunter team goes into the hedge'. The leads were all women. The men were the secondary characters.
