@jaded Pacing, maybe? It's been at least a decade since I saw it, so would have to see again to be sure.

        M. Night Shyamalan was never known for his fast-paced movies. The Sixth Sense works because it moves glacially. If people expected Unbreakable to be more like Stuart Little, I mean --

@ganymede I think Unbreakable is one of his best films.

Unbreakable is, without a doubt, one of my favorite Shyamalan films, and one of my favorite films, period. I'll definitely be watching Glass, even if it's likely to end in sadness and disappointment.

Co-sign the love for Unbreakable. I think it wasn't what people expected after Sixth Sense but is a really good film. It bought me years of goodwill that didn't totally die until The Happening. I'm stoked for Glass.

Why would you think that? Split was a pretty good movie, mostly because of a superlative performance from James McAvoy. The Visit was also a watchable, well-received movie considering Shyamalan's past. If there's one thing that he's good at, it's deconstructing what makes a particular genre tick. His storylines may be trite and hackneyed, but he understands the genres. And of all of his original movies, Unbreakable is my favorite.

@ganymede I defended Shyamalan longer than any of my friends (there are even some things I /really/ liked about The Happening), but I admit that nothing he's done lately has moved me at all. But I'm willing to keep an open mind, and I'm looking forward to the movie.

@ganymede oh man. Lady in the water. I know I will get groaned at. But I really enjoyed that. I can watch it on repeat.

@arkandel Bob Balaban monologing his own death was fucking lovely. Or Mrs Kim's daughter's voice omg. So screechy "My mother said she is a princess Narf" Like, in the middle of a club and her mother makes her call to relay a portion of this fairytale. I quite enjoy the movie. And his music choice. He sure does love giannachio I believe. Man, I have the village soundtrack even. Gravel road is still my favourite.

I liked it just fine as well. For me, it was an expose into rural America's oh-so-nutty spirituality.

I think what works against Shyamalan these days is his reputation more than anything. It used to work greatly in his favor ('that guy really knows how to do movie twists!') but after a couple of his movies bombed - and come on, The Happening was terrible - there was just too much... negative stuff out on the interwebs about his films.

"How is this guy still getting movies made?" was pretty common before he scored big again with Split.

@ganymede I loved Unbreakable. I think what threw people off is that it was a superhero movie before superhero movies became a thing. (And it was not marketed as one.)

I've been anticipating the build up to Glass for a long time. I loved Unbreakable. Split was great. Shyamalan has struggled for a while because his 'twists' fell flat more than once and in ridiculous ways (The Village is another one; he took a concept that had been done too many times and also in a book many people read in middle school and tried to market it as a BIG DEAL GUIZ and then was shocked when people were like 'oh I know what this is' before the opening credits were even done).

But this trilogy is, I think, his true masterpiece because... it's not "what a tweest!" and it's street level "supers" in a properly 'gritty' way (aka not DC comics I am Batman Ben Affleck grit).

Saying the quiet parts out loud since 1996.

I haven't seen it yet, but many of the reviews I've been seeing are pretty positive, and they've already cleared a sequel.

No one cares if Aquaman is good, though I'm not sure why they didn't just have Jason Momoa and Amber heard getting sprayed with water in tight clothes for 75 minutes. It would have been way cheaper
