I have not seen it yet, but this is the general opinion of some of my friends as well. That it's a decent movie, but probably forgettable in the grand scheme of Marvel movies (which tbh most Marvel movies are only really good the first time around for me, but then again I'm a die hard fanboy for The Dark Knight).

Captain Marvel was wonderful! Loved it from start to finish. Lots of fun action, good humor. The theatre I was in seemed to agree - people laughed at the right spots, cheered, applauded at the end. It was great.

Just learned today that Warner Bros. is doing a Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix that is directed by Todd Philips, the guy who did the Hangover movies. It is supposed to be separate of the current DCEU stuff but meant to flesh out the background and history of the iconic villain.

I am not sure how I feel about the movie studios thinking we have to have an origin story for the Joker, but I'm definitely interested in seeing Phoenix try his hand at this. I am so torn.

It really looks like garbage, to be honest. I don’t know why they haven’t even tried to adapt The Killing Joke, but is the authoritative backstory for me.

I'm in the same boat as Gany here.
I've seen some of the set photos and Instagram clips and everything makes me cringe.

I saw the trailer.

To be honest, the entire "all it takes is one bad day" is pretty much what The Killing Joke is about, but the tone of this trailer just -- it feels all fucking wrong. I'm a fan of Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips, but there's just nothing about the trailer that sells me on the idea that the script will be solid.

The Wikipedia suggests that elements are taken from The Killing Joke, and that Scorsese is co-producing. This is probably a good thing. But there is something so schmaltzy about the trailer that I just can't shake the thought that this take on the Joker will be somewhat less compelling that even Leto's version.

Yes, let's take Babs' brainchild and where she truly came into her own (as Oracle), how she went out and made it her mission to find other female heroes who had struggled and arguably 'fallen' and given them a purpose and....

.......make it a Harley thing.

I guess I'd be salty, but if I recall correctly Oracle is in a chair and Barbara Gordon hasn't really had much exposure in DC's films since played by Alicia Silverstone. I think you'd have to bridge that, and I don't think the general public is ready for a full-blown version of The Killing Joke, especially given the criticisms that Moore had to face even back in the old, chauvinistic days.

Huntress, Renee Montoya, and Cassandra Cain don't have much exposure either (Cassandra, arguably, has the least out of any of the four ladies). Black Canary is prob the only one 'well known' of the recruits.

They're all about re-writing origins anyway. Say she got injured in some other way as Batgirl.

I think WB just doesn't want someone in a wheelchair as a lead role.

No, I think the kind of action movies these are, a wheelchair character would be much harder to write for. For all it’s action, the X-men movies are a lot more philosophical.

I know this is 20th C. Vs. WB, but if they wrote Gordon more like, say, Sharon Carter but with a personality, I think they would be fine.

I also wonder if that's why Fox went with the X-Men era they did for the new films, so they could have at least a little bit of 'hay look young Xavier, who can walk!' and then shift the focus to largely everyone else.

I did not even know a trailer was out yet, so I just took a look at it. And if you could not recognize Pheonix in the trailer I would have thought it was some fan-made movie trailer. It...there are no words to how bad it looks.

I do wish they'd adapt The Killing Joke but doubt we'll ever see that full storyline played out.

I really enjoyed Captain Marvel, it was not perfect but I thoroughly enjoyed it and the mood in the audience was great.

Also, as an added bonus, I can now blacklist Youtubers who put up misogynistic rants about how bad it is. It seems to be a really sensitive detector there even if some of the 'discoveries' are disappointing.

I'm not surprised people are hesitant to touch that particular story again.

Nope. Just like Black Panther was deliberately released in February last year.

Not complaining or shaming, just recognizing that if you have specific events relating to a demographic that is tied to a movie you made, it makes sense to release the movie on or around that event.

Did you watch it? I did.

They did not fuck it up. They did try to tack on about 30 minutes of unnecessary character development between Barbara and the Batman. I understood what they were going after, but that doesn't mean it was necessary. But was it bad? No, it wasn't.

No, what you have is a lot of fanboy nonsense, for the most part, regarding the added sequences, and some ornery bullshit about deviating from the source material "too much." Frankly, I enjoyed The Watchmen movie as much as I enjoyed the graphic novel, but I liked the movie's ending more because it is a little more realistic and understandable. Did the fanboys bitch and moan? Oh, you betcha.

So, no. I liked The Killing Joke. It was very good. It just wasn't as "edgy" as The Dark Knight or as 90s-noire was the graphic novel. So what? Hamill and Conroy do just fine, and you'll pardon if I don't need to see suggestive photos of the Joker banging a paralyzed Babs.

@Ganymede I did, actually. I own it. Because I pre-ordered it. Because it was something I'd been waiting literal years to see. And I was disappointed. I don't care that much about the one time Babs and Batman made the beast with two backs and it absolutely wasn't at all necessary to the story. I was pissed that there was more emphasis put on the front half of the movie than the back. They spent more time building up this relationship that wasn't necessary... but the actual HORROR of the Killing Joke was so muted as to be almost non-existent. No, I'm not suggesting graphic photographs of Joker and Babs. But dear God, all that lead up, all that story building... and then eh. It was like 45 minutes of foreplay leading to a one pump chump. I couldn't have been more disappointed. Hamill and Conroy are as excellent as ever, the voice work was great. The animation was fabulous. The story made me want to cry in horrible and unintended ways.
