The term cracker meant poor white people in Virginia
I always thought it referred to slave owners cracking the whip.

According to Wikipedia, you're both (kind of) wrong.
Not that I'm taking Wikipedia as the definitive answer, but I rank it somewhat higher than "something someone said on the internet". Wikipedia is more, "something someone said on the internet, but showed their work".

This is the business venture of two local friends of mine (though they ship all over). If you don’t want to go to an escape room, they can bring it to you! :). I test piloted a few things early on, they are top notch, and would be a super fun way to mix up a game night if you wanted someone else to do the prep work!

I was called a cracker once when I was in college. I was so utterly baffled. I peered at the person who called me such as if they were nutters for thinking that was an insult.
I thought I was being called a cracker because I was white like a Saltine cracker, and I asked wtf was supposed to be so offensive about that. Were they implying I was bland? (Not an adjective anyone ever has used to describe me, so the whole thing was extra ridiculous to me.)
That whole group of black people were entirely taken off-guard by my response. One of them told me it was for "whip cracker". I said that made more sense for an insult, except it wasn't accurate cos I am first-generation American and if they were insinuating that my eastern European Jew ancestors were somehow responsible for the slave trade, they really needed to better educate themselves.
They gave up after that.

@auspice I have been in a similar situation as that teacher. Alas. Parents with, presumably, learning difficulties that can't or won't consent getting their children assessed. Unless it's actually abusive, the state often won't do anything. (And even when it is... the state often doesn't have the resources to do much beyond removal.)

@auspice That's one of my fave Key & Peele sketches. I also die at how much the white chick costs in Wendell's video for "The Power of Wings".
