If you work hard, son, maybe someday you'll RP

I almost set a mortal only game set in 1984 but I was pretty sure I'd be the only one excited to play there.

@ZombieGenesis You're wrong.

Out of sheer nostalgia I'd like to see a 1990's setting. I want to see trench-coats, brick-phones and Usenet.
A friend was doing an online tabletop thing set in 1997-ish and I was so excited to be like "MY CHARACTER WORKS AT THE USED CD STORE"
I would play the shit out of Empire Records: The MUSH.

I'd play the shit out of generic 90s. Like Singles meets Friends, doyne random city neighborhood starting to become trendy with a few hangouts. Some bands, some coffee shops, some random drama. Like Old City Philly or Brick Town Detroit. Take the various groups from Higher Learning or, better, PCU (John Favreau with dreads) as factions trying to have the coolest hangout or something (we can't go to Roasted Ground, it's full of grunge kids, ewww). Or on a college and African Nation's vs Hacky Sac blazoids for best music in the quad (digable planets Cool Like That on one blaster, Chili Peppers higher ground on the other, both groups wearing flannels).

And on Ares pls

So... College: The MU. I dig it.
I briefly considered a parody game based in a Soapy TV Teen Supernatural Romance Drama sort of setting, and was looking at Westchester PA for it. Since odds are super slim I'll ever do that, if y'all want an inspiration town for 'classic TV style quasi-quaint college town full of random festivals', you could do way worse, and it's worth checking out. (It's such a CW town, it really is. Mystic Falls of the mid-Atlantic.)

HorrorMUX did an 80s segment and it was so, SO fun, I would LOVE a 90s one as well.
-
My friend just opened a Buffy game that's set in the 90s if any of you like other flavors than just human.
-
There's a coffee shop in Cincinnati that (at least while I lived there in early 00's) had the most 90s grunge feel to it. I miss that coffee shop sometimes.
-
We lived in the same city at that same time! What a small world! What part of town was the shop in? It sounds familiar.

I've been wracking my brain for years trying to remember. I lived there 2004-2007 and it was NaNoWriMo 2004 that I spent a lot of time there. It was a coffee shop full of old couches, chairs, battered tables, and it was sort of notable in my mind for a big ass couch in the front window.
I really wish I could remember what part of town so I could ask the people I know still in the region 'IS IT STILL THERE?!'
There was also this little quaint downtown spot somewhere on the east side that had the most amazing used bookstore that I just randomly stumbled across and I'd love to point people to it but I literally just stumbled across it during one of my 'go out and drive aimlessly' days.
-
Yep, that's exactly the time frame I was in college there. The bookstore doesn't sound familiar but the coffee shop does, and I too can't quite remember where it was.

Well, at least now I know I wasn't hallucinating the coffee shop. Sometimes I've wondered if I did, even though I have clear memories of the people I was with, the wood grain of the table, etc.

@Sunny I wish I had been that smart on the new games I recently started playing on. However, this goes back to the "finding RP is hard work" complaint that had me starting this thread in the first place...
-
@surreality Love West Chester, though it reminds me of famous son Bam Margera. Ha.
-
@bear_necessities One hundred percent wrong.

People have, at times, posted stuff here, too, if they don't have a built-in group to go somewhere with. It's worth a try, since you may find people willing to give the game a shot who may have resisted previously for exactly the same reason -- not having someone to go with. Also worth it, since people already there may reach out if they know.
And, yeeeeeah, I loved the apartment I lived in when I lived there. It was amazing. It is the most 'should totally have been haunted' place I've ever lived, but... nothing, really. I miss the hell out of that apartment, save for the whole 'no parking anywhere ever' problem.
-
@L-B-Heuschkel People are struggling, but they were also not RPing with me in 2019, pre-pandemic, when I started this thread. So there's that!
It's interesting to me, because I am RPing more during this whole thing not less. I want a distraction and social interaction. In theory, MU*s are both, except when you have to endlessly hustle to RP, and then they're just unfun.
-
@surreality It's too late on the most recent game I'm on, unfortunately. I'm already playing there and I didn't think to do all that stuff. Sucks to be me.
West Chester is adorable and I liked the surrounding countryside, too.

@Lisse24 FWIW, Lisse, I miss playing witcha!
