Calaveras-style sandbox set in the 80s or 90s... just with a little more staff oversight to keep players from steamrolling each others' stories...
Hindsight and all that.
I almost pondered taking the rodeo aspect in a follow up game after Calaveras and narrowing the focus to an amateur rodeo circuit with actual staff plot. Like in new Mexico this month for the Santa Fe PBR qualifier. Random rodeo dude is shot mysteriously because he owed drug lords money the mafia tries to extort other riders, or in Kansas for the Dodge City Rodeo and fourth of July celebration and abusive husband and his biker friends are out to get the new person and their friends while they're in town. But I've moved on alas. Staff oversight would go a long ways, we had to many retired feds ir drug Lord's or assassin historians in the end it was like some modern law drama.
ETA: corrections on my phone silly me

@Lotherio
Man I would play the modern rodeo game with like intrigue and competitions. -
@Lotherio I definitely miss having a Calaveras-esque game in the universe of games that are out there to play. Are you making a new game? I think there was some talk about you reviving your Arthurian/medieval game, but I don't know what happened to that.
-
@bear_necessities I was knee deep in a Fifth Kingdom revisit on Ares but it just felt like recreating something that ran it's short course. I am working on something in that Arthurian Fantasy vein though. More enchanted fantasy with some Fifth Kingdom like elements. Traditional sort of fantasy, borrowing inspiration from like Song of the Sea, Legend (Ridley Scott 80s film), Watership Down. That and projecting were my time will be in the next few months.
I do think modern has lots of potential and is untapped, but lots of folks look to established cannon. But when you look at it the more popular long lasting places currently out there with ongoing regular RP regardless of size, its all pretty original theme.
If I do modern drama I want to do the monthly shake up. Instead of a new RP partner for RP to earn XP, it would be you get a random name and have to make up some drama. Like in a relationship, you get other person Zita and you kiss them or one night stand or do something inappropriate with them and let your current person find out or something ... Or dump your current for this flame that burns out and spend the rest of themonth convincing your old p it was a one time mistake ... The stuff off an actual modern drama/soaps.

eh, I think people will make their own drama. It's really hard to give people prompts because then you're deciding their story for them rather than letting them go out and make it.
But the enchanted fantasy game sounds like fun!

@Xetetic I'm sorry to hear that you've had such a miserable experience. Can't say I blame you for wanting to do something else for a while. Some games are exceedingly difficult to get into and some feel like an old boys' club where new people simply aren't welcome.
Here's to hoping you feel up to returning to the hobby and find one of those more welcoming games when you do.

It isn't so hard to find RP, but most of it is found elsewhere. The MU* world is kind of petering out.

Where would that be?

@Jynxbox @BroadStreetBully Yes, where, pray tell?

This is twice I have seen this statement with no reason to believe it.

It’s (almost) June. For whatever reason, mushing is always dying in June, September, and December. It has to have something to do with holiday schedules. I must conclude this most recent spate is early because schools let out early.
ETA: Blah blah, something to do with the expectation that when they have all day free it’s going to be all rp all the time, but daytime on games is very different than peak blah blah.
-
"MUSHing is dying" seems to be another way to say "I no longer am young or free enough to obsess about it for every waking moment, and thus the hobby must be in terminal decline because my friends and I all have adult responsibilities now."
-
Whenever I read "X is dying" now, I just assume it means "X is changing and I'm not."

can confirm, am old

I have often spoke about the next generation at risk of being alienated if we don't change the user interface, but I haven't personally seen a sharp decline in the number of MUSHes or the activity on them in the last 5-10 years.
That said, I do think that there is more RP going on in other platforms. There are tons of MUDs. Play-by-forum sites with tens of thousands of players. Hundreds of games on Storium, which has gotten national media attention. A vibrant community of folks who RP with emotes on MMOs. Tumbler blogs, Discord RP, Roll20 and other interactive TTRPG forums.
There's lots of RP to be had, and numerically I think MUSHing is a very small part of the bucket. That doesn't make it any less worthwhile.
-
I agree completely that there's way way way way way more RP happening elsewhere, I just don't think that mushing is in decline in comparison to itself.

A lot of that is really "this thing has been so stupidly overblown in importance that millennials have chosen to eat and pay rent rather than invest in X."

Can confirm, came back to MU*s from that. Don't miss the ultra toxic, alt-right take-over of at least European WoW servers one bit.
