I put little wire-mesh trays on my desk, because that is what Professional People do, and I am a Professional People.
Now they're filling up with paper. And the paper isn't going away. Sometimes other people's trays have a few sheets of paper, but the paper goes away.
My trays have developed a fault.
Tape a little paper 'U' to one of them.
When someone asks you why you have a 'U' taped to one, you say: "Oh! That's Atreyu."

It works much like it was made 20 years ago, in some ways. Which is what makes it so satisfying to wrestle it into the output I need.
It's a really good system that too few offices used back in the day to manage projects. It's not so good for legal practice because it's impossible to plan for multiple attorneys. But it is really good for the average project, and by "the average project" I mean "anything that doesn't involve attorneys, who are pretty much just like feral fucking cats all the time, I swear."

@Ganymede It's great for my purposes, which here are generating distinct tasks, tracking them through various processes, saving all sorts of data, conversations, and attachments around them, and then surfacing it all on a live dashboard. I'm impressed with what it can do, even if I'm frequently banging my head at how I have to do it.

Practice Panther is pretty good!

Well if the little paper U on your tray is so bad, then you can rip it off and throw it away.
It's tearable.

I've made my "teacher" desk as small as I possibly can and still have a place to keep my shit.
On that desk I have a SINGLE PLASTIC WIRE BOX. One. On it is a sign that says "turn stuff in here" That is for my kiddos, but also for me. Every single piece of paper I get, any binders, books, WHATEVER gets put into that basket. Then on Friday after school I sit down with it and sort through it all. If it needs graded, it gets graded. If it needs put away, it gets put away. If it's important enough I still need it "out" but isn't immediatly going to be used it gets put at the bottom of the basket and starts the next week. My stack is usually about 7-8 inches tall by Friday.
This system:
a) Means that when I put stuff down it is (generally) in one place so I only have to look in one place for where I can get.
b) The kiddos know that they are ONLY to turn stuff into this pile. They aren't allowed to physically hand me anything or I //will// lose it.It's worked for seven years now... but damn if that pile doesn't get HUGE sometimes.

Also.
I'm not allowed to RP again until I grade the damn pile of essays on my plate.
I hate essays guys. I hate them. Even if they're only one paragraph long. I. hate. them.

I hate marking some essays. There are ones that take me over an hour because of the terrible writing. Others take me hours because, despite obviously being from other sources, I have to identify the sources, mark it up and report them. Some are a delight!
We've just got them to move to online exams for multiple choice!

@Ghost You realize you technically spelled "because" wrong while discussing the correct use of English words and grammar, right?

I wish that I could convince my attorneys of this. Between Smartsheet and Sharepoint they're convinced they've hit the next big thing, and I'm over here like 'can we please please not'?

To be fair, Smartsheet is good for short-term projects in litigation and long-term development projects for which legal expertise is required.
But as far as firm management is concerned, it is an inefficient use of time. Feral cats are going to feral, period.

And yet... every day, "How do I spell because?"
"Look on the word wall."
Someday they'll realize it's there.
Maybe.
Then again, it snowed today. So my 7-9 year olds were inside all day long. I'm very tired.
