      @Tinuviel
It might have less to do with pre-orders but being able to pre-order games does not help since it goes back to that sense of entitlement that I see in some people who do game pre-orders.

But typing rage-filled diatribes and sending death threats to level designers on twitter

I understand what you are saying here, and that this happens over game delays is just terrible. I think that this in part is just part of one of the problems with Twitter, albeit as it relates not just to the gaming industry. I do not use Twitter. I think that it encourages, supports, and endorses social toxicity and internet mobbing. I mean take the worst of our online game communities - COD, League, DOTA - and amplify them by 1000 and that is Twitter. So I wish I could be surprised that happens to designers and game developers.

I think it's one of the problems of our instant access and availability to spread rage and find echo chambers. Twitter is an avenue for that, but isn't unique.

          This.
Twitter, I think, just makes it easier to find and encapsulate. But look at YouTube comments (the owner of the video would get alerts for all of those), article comments (again, the above).... many of us have trained ourselves out of reading comment threads, but there are people who have to.

I actually don't mind pre-orders. Unless they're tied to some really significant bonuses/locked content (which with modding is a pretty high bar), they're... well, optional, right? It seems a pretty voluntary step players can take to support a game or studio they really believe in. It's basically the real world equivalent of:take my

If you'd buy it close to release anyway, vs. waiting on reviews, patches, sales, and complete editions, there's not much difference. It's mostly an AAA trend so these games aren't generally going to go vaporware.

Conversely, I'm really leery of Early Access titles. It's sad, because compared to pre-orders, this is more on of the indie side of the coin, and they're often counting on that money to fund later development. But that ends up being the problem. After a few idealistic attempts, I've learned that most of these titles never make it out of Early Access. The ones that do often kill their own chances, as the time they spend in what are essentially long public alphas often kill any hype as the interested players try the games out and move on. I don't want to say small studios shouldn't do anything they can to make their projects successes, but I feel they often end up shooting themselves in the foot here.

              Fans are terrible.

For my thoughts: I'm not a fan of preorder culture on the whole. Me, the only video game I bought within a month of release, like, ever was the third Mass Effect (and, well, case in point there; I'm super lucky @Aria was out of the house when I started swearing at the TV at 3 in the ante meridian). If I haven't played the game it's new to me.

("But @insomniac7809, what about massively multiplayer games when the servers are empty?" You, Hypothetical Strawman, have grossly misunderstood what appeals to me about video games. "This is fun, but wouldn't it be more fun if I was hearing a Korean teenager calling me a homophobic slur as I play" I said, never.)

But yeah. Pre-orders. "So you can buy a video game." I'm listening. "Well, there's no video game, but you will get the video game when it exists." Oh, is this funding the project? "Well, we're an EA subsidiary, so..." Okay, gotcha. So is it cheaper if I pre-order it than it will be if I wait six months until the game actually works, and after people can tell me whether or not it's a turd? "NOOOOOO no no no. Nonononono. No. Uh-uh." So I don't really see how I benefit from buying a game blind at the most expensive it will ever be while it's still likely to be full of game-breaking bugs. "Well... your pretend character gets a hoodie." Oh well be still my fucking heart...

Star Citizen. I can't play the stupid game that I paid for numerous times over because it never ever will be released. But at least I have a lot of pretend spaceships I can't fly. YAY!

I am so glad I only ever got the basic pre-order for that and quickly realized 'oh, this is... not worth my money.' I know too many people who have sunk in the order of $1k+ into it.

I have a friend who has $5000 in ships for that game and I keep telling him that he'll never get to go anywhere in them. He flips me off a lot.

He has a purchasing addiction and the liquid income to do things like that. The past year he's been fascinated with board games of all stripes and has paid into the Kickstarter of about 10 of them.

ahhhh anthem, the game it took days to just get into the beta and then the beta was unplayable because I could never even get to a mission

and the town looked like they lifted the meshes straight from Oblivion

More's the pity, because the parts of Anthem that are fun are very fun. The rest of it, though? ... yeah.

Probably War of the Roses. It was supposed to be a successor to Mount & Blade Warband. It looked pretty, but the combat was trash, and the spawning mechanic was god awful, with people teleporting in on teammates.

Right after that, Star Wars Battlefront. Gosh, it was pretty, but the gameplay was awful. Spawns were all extremely campy. That, and those stupid perks that EA always puts into their FPS games. I hear SW Battlefront 2 was better, but I just can't even.

Absolutely the worst purchase I have ever made.

In the first set of things to do, you have to fight someone with your fists. And the FPS fistfighting system was painfully stupid.

Like, I don’t mind a learning curve. And I don’t mind fistfighting. But this part was so frustrating, it turned me off the entire game.
