@surreality We did have a WM staffer whose main job (if I remember correctly, it's been like... twenty years) was taking in the submitted logs, anonymize them, then randomnly distribute them around the grader team making sure no one ended up grading their own logs.

And yes, it was subjective as hell of course. In retrospect the greatest issue with this was that a very certain 'style' of emote fighting - as we called it - was the right way of doing it. While I have no recollection of the pronation factor (I don't think I've ever used the word in... anything but maybe I championed it back then - who knows any more) there were specific things you could do wrong, both documented and undocumented.

For instance you could never close an emote meaning something like "Bob slashes at Jim and hits him in the leg". Jim could accept the hit in his own emote, but not the other way around.

The funniest incident I recall was one Lan player (who lost the character after being caught and shamed for this incident) had gone over past logs of high Weaponmastery scored players, took their poses pretty much verbatim, changed the names and used them for his fight.

Unless you're a doctor, you should never be using 'pronate' and similar in your writing. It's jenky as all heck.

Repeat after me: purple prose is bad.

If I have to sit and spend five minutes just puzzling out what the fuck your character is doing, it is not good writing.

An irresistible urge to engage in the contumacious denial of the brevity so highly esteemed in these literary latter days and to revel in sesquipedalian verbiage akin to what a perspicacious member of the literati might find while perusing catalogues of authors past frequently engenders a sense of frustration and, dare I say, ire in the modern reader.

Purple prosing the hell out of in-character letters has always been some of the most fun/amusing writing of all time for me tho, especially for characters who don't actually speak that way and are often involved in Dubious Affairs.

That's different, though. I'll write IC messages in my character's 'voice.' But for poses that are meant for the player to read? plz do not.

I warble back and forth on the purple prose. Like. I will specifically use utter nonsense in an @desc (Blonde, just under 5'6", and fit! Like, muscle-y, but not super muscle-y. With clothing that changes based on the weather and other assorted circumstances! Descs are hard.)

In poses, I somehow manage to come across (in my inner-ear, at least) like the SNL Love-Ahs. I should probably just tell people to read my poses in that voice, even. It's the best!

As for Big Word Poses Bad, I get it. I can't stand the dialogue in, say... the film Contact, because everyone speaks like Carl Sagan. All those SAT words. Dude should have gotten someone to edit it.

As an aside, we're running a big scene tonight. If you wanna make a char in an hour (no need for stats yet, just have a concept and I'll let you on grid for the scene), then come join in! Mage-newbs is all good too!

                                goldenroad.mudhosting.net 4201, right?

Maybe it's a routing thing... Never had a general failure error before.

                                  Found it!

It was my peerblock firewall. At one point the game's IP address must have been used by a spammer so the moment I disabled my peerblock software firewall it went right through. I'll add an exception to the list.
