Why We Don't Make New Friends Anymore (Or Creepers Do Creepy Things)
-
In 20 years of MUing I've only met 4 MU people IRL and each time it was awkward and weird. The worst was a person I met on the defunct B5MUX that I really had feelings for until I visited her IRL and discovered that she lived in a dilapidated mobile home with a dozen cats in a real hoarder situation. Disgusting is not even the word. I won't say that I won't ever meet another MU*er but if I do it will be strictly as friends and in a neutral place.
-
I've met quite a few MUers in my time. All my interactions were totally pleasant and without any drama or awkwardness over the normal meeting someone for the first time awkwardness.
-
The only MU'ers I ever truly hung out with in person involved a hotel party where it was a ton of rum and coke, cards against humanity, and then my SO and I hooked up in our room, which the MU person littered with rose petals and a dreamy picture of Jean-Claude Van Damme.
Figured 1 and done. No more. Never again. I'll call it ending on a high note.
-
My two best friends are people I met through Mu*ing. I moved to the same town as one of them for a few years, before moving back closer to my parents. We've met many times and we play OTT regularly.
That said, I've also met some outright weird people via Mu*ing.
Edited to add: I was introduced to MUDs via a computer society I was a member of, so I had many RL friends who did that, and then moved on to MUSH/MUX back in the beginnings of time. Don't think either of them still play. -
I've met 4 or 5 people in person from m*ing and they were all fine. Only one who I would probably hang out with on a regular basis if geography allowed, but no creepers.

Sounds like they set a high bar.

I've met maybe five people RL from MU...
One happened to also work at a Tower Records so I got to make all my tracking calls with him and not deal with the jackass buyer, and we got fairly close once I moved back to the Midwest from Hollywood. He had another friend that we gamed with, and I met her, too, and I can't remember who she is on here and I apologize (@krmbm, maybe?)
Two were a married couple and we eventually all lived in the same city and would hang out together; we drifted apart once he got a faculty position in another state.
The last was another player from Metro; he actually came to Philadelphia from Baltimore to hang out with me when a friend of mine was playing his first-ever US gig there like nine year ago or so. Not a single bit of weirdness or yuck going on there; we even shared a room without even a hint of impropriety or sleaze. Tried to get him to come back and meet me there again last month when another friend headlined the Dracula's Ball but he wasn't able to.
Either I put out a great 'don't fuck with me' vibe in person, or I've been fortunate that the people I've extended myself to all had some kind of facility with social skills.

Almost all of my chosen family locally ate people I met because of mushing (though not necessarily because we played a lot together if at all). We have seen each other through some really ugly times RL. It is amazing to have people that you know absolutely will have your back RL through thick and thin, regardless of game stuff (where there have been the usual arguments and disagreements). I never would have met them if I had not been a musher and considering that some of my RL and online buddies have been in my life for over 20 years (can you believe it guys?) I am eternally grateful to the hobby.
I have met a ton more mushfolk from around the world. It is always fun regardless of whether I click with them (and it's always kind of surprising who I do click with face to face--sometimes it's with people where we annoy the fuck out of each other on game) however i always meet folks in public or they are invited to a group event at my place, with a few exceptions when I was younger, so that cuts down on creeper issues.

Probably a smart choice, that.

I think you mean:

@Lotherio I love BabyYoda's "WTF is going on? I don't know what's going on but I'm not comfortable" faces.
(Btw this is not a spoiler. No one knows what Baby Yoda is, but no one knows the name of Yoda's species so by default it's just Baby Yoda)

I dunno wth that thing is, but I wouldn't get it wet or feed it after midnight, if I were you.
-
Yeah, sorry for spelling error. I do really love feeding people, but not usually that way.

We know what that copy of To Serve Man really is.

...while this thread is depressing enough to require some levity, can it please be kept on the rails, y'all?

For the last ten years I've met at least one Mu* related person every year along with sometimes their kid and/or spouse. I didn't set OUT to do this, but it happened?
I did cheat this last year and meet the same person I did the year before, but I'm okay with that.
Every single one of them have been amazing and lovely. I would 10/10 hang out with any and all of them again.
