Is there anything returning or new coming up that anyone is interested in, in particular?
The Witcher.
Yeah I heard this was coming to Netflix. Now that I've done some research into it, the author of the novels is being a collaborator for the show so this gives me some hope it will be good.
Or maybe not interested in?
That new X-Men venture on Fox. Stephen Moyer can suck a bag of dicks.
Yeah it is on Fox. I do not trust them with sci-fi shows of any sort.

@Jaded Star Trek: Discovery, The Gifted, I'll give Inhumans a shot of course. I also liked The Mayor's trailer for some reason, and Zach Braff's Start Up hit some major Scrubs vibes for me.

The novels are a lot better than the games, even translated awkwardly from the Polish. That should tell you something.

@Ganymede
I have read the translated novels. I am hoping that if they go with a recreation they stick close to the novels but from what I'm reading it sounds like it might be something a little different. -
@Jaded That's not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes a different medium requires changing things around.
I think two things make or break fantasy series adopted from books... budget and creative vision. The Shannara Chronicles series is just... meh, and looks incredible fake and blue screen-y, with actors telegraphing their parts in (all those different accents among the same Elves, wtf), and directors who seem to just want to crank their alloted number of episodes and be done.
And then there's Game of freakin' Thrones.

Hey, it's Netflix. They tend to do things right, and aren't beholden to the vagaries of a television schedule.
I trust it will be very good. Or, at least, better than the Shannara Chronicles, which seriously destroyed my childhood.
-
@Ganymede Yeah, Netflix's advantage in storytelling is massive. They have no need to account for filler episodes, villain-of-the-week stuff, dealing with 'new viewers' by planting constant exposition to narrate the whole arc up to then, account for commercial breaks...
But even so, I really have to give it to them that they put good quality stuff out there. The fight coordinators they had on Daredevil (especially season 1) blew me away for example. And they haven't fallen into the romantic cliche trap so many series get trapped in - there's no Oliver+Felicity shit or Barry+Iris endless, endless storylines until I just hope they'd kill someone just to stop watching the same predictable, tired dialogues over and over again.
I haven't watched the new Sense8 season yet either. Saving it for a plane ride.
Oh, oh! And Stranger Things. Goddamn Stranger Things.

I love how the persistent nature of Netflix means people discover things at different times. One of my cube-neighbors at work came in yesterday just raving about how much he'd loved Stranger Things after inhaling it over a weekend.

Star Trek: Discovery,
I'm so worried about this show. I was super excited until I heard it was pre-Kirk, then I was only like, okay, breathe, it's not going to be terrible, quantum leap guy isn't in it.. Then I saw the preview, please don't those be the klingons, please don't let those be the klingons..
-
@SG
Yeah, I keep getting a little less excited. A new Star Trek show with Bryan Fuller...not really involved because he's busy with American Gods...that's going to be locked away on CBS' subscription service that should not exist...that's going to be pre-Kirk instead of post-Voyager...Oh well. I am a Trekkie. It's maybe the one fandom I'm most attached to. This is a thing I will watch. I enjoyed Enterprise, even with its legion of flaws.

@Three-Eyed-Crow It just feels like there's some executive producer somewhere purposefully making bad decisions because their kid likes Star Wars and not Star Trek.

@Arkandel
I was not meaning different was bad. I agree with you in fact. But sometimes going with different can be detrimental because The Witcher, mostly because of the video games, has generated a huge following. So my big concern would be negative reception that would tank a tv show because 'it does not follow the VGs' when a lot of players are not familiar with the novels. -

There are a lot of Star Wars video games, novels, and fanfiction, and the new movies don't really follow them.
People sometimes consist of idiots who will complain when something doesn't meet their unassailable explanations.

@Arkandel I saw that trailer and was like ... Oooo... Galaxy Quest tv show ... then after watching the trailer, my hopes deflated a bit. I should be laughing out loud even at the trailer and I found I wasn't really.
As for the actual Star Trek show ... I have my concerns. I don't mind a reimagining .... like uniforms looking different or even Klingons ... it always seems disingenuous when I see people freak out about uniforms or how Klingons looked or anything like that when ... they change ALL THE TIME. I mean, Picard was wearing FUCKING red on the pilot of ST:TNG ... RED!! What is he, an engineer?!?!
Seriously, things change, I can deal with that if the quality is good. My main hype is actually that Jason Isaacs and Michelle Yeoh are in it. These are not small time actors and they are both VERY good. They should be able to ground the scenes and give the younger actors good workboard off which to bounce their own acting.
-
Fuck you.
-
@Arkandel That actually looks really good!
-
@Arkandel
I'm kinda interested...but then I like Scottt Grimes and he is in it. -
