Here, this will help you. (Spoilers if you haven't seen what is probably the best TV you'll watch.)

@arkandel What can I say? With their reputation, Disney is kinda touchy about people who engage in soft Holocaust denial on their dime.

I wonder what ol' Walt would say about that.

For lunch bunch the kids wanted to watch a movie instead of play a game, so we watched the first episode of this and now I want to watch them all.

You should. Everyone should, really. I’m sure GreenFlashlight and I could break this board by chatting about how this show is probably the best thing no one has watched.

But the first season is the slow one. It gets so much better, but the first season got me hooked.
I watched it all one evening and came away wondering how they managed to present childhood abuse and trauma in such a relatable way.

The Magicians (5 Seasons; Netflix) has ruined me for the forseeable future by making me crave emotionally resonant Mage RP. It's a little rough in places - and certainly isn't a faithful adaptation of Lev Grossman's series of the same name - but overall, I found it a deeply enjoyable experience. Like any good fantasy media, it uses its supernatural settings (a graduate school for people born with the gift of magic; an Earth that's full of magic and magical beings just beneath the surface; Narnia, but extremely fucked up) to facilitate stories about relatable human ideas (about relationships, depression, surviving trauma, growing up, sexuality...), and while its characters start off as pretty clear, trope-filled archetypes, they develop in ways that lend them all a significant degree of depth and interest.

Would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys urban fantasy content, with the significant caveat that the first couple season in particular do include references to/instances of sexual assault which are fairly major plot points; that element of the show was perhaps my least favorite by far, but it's something that diminishes as time goes on.

It's also something that is tackled in a mature and realistic way, with nuance and respect for survivors and how that trauma can affect them and what it can make them do.

I would recommend to anyone binging it to definitely watch the last episode of the first season and then immediately watch the first 2-3 of the second season. Don't wait. I had to wait and it was a really bad time.

"Excuse the hell out of you. He's a bag of dicks. I'm a carefully curated box of cocks." -- to @GirlCalledBlu upon being misrepresented.

I am curious with She-Ra.. I've recommended it a bunch to various kids and so far none of them have liked it.

Is it one of those shows that appeals way more to adults than the supposedly intended audience?

Not really. My kids like it. My friends' kids like it.

I think it depends on the age and mindset of the kids.

But for adults? Yes, watch it.

My nine year old started watching it all on his own and absolutely loved it, he got me into it in fact, so it kinda just depends on the kid I think.

I felt the opposite. Season 5 ended so perfectly that I didn't want any more. Some series are best left completed as the writers intended, and that was the case here.
