Gauging Interest in a new Erotic RP MU* (with anonymous survey)

Hi everyone,

Long-time lurker, first-time-in-a-long-time poster here, with a new account I'd like to use exclusively to discuss a project I'm considering developing. First though, I'd like to do some "market research", so to speak, and figure out what kinds of people are playing/have played erotic RP MU*s. I'm not interested in demographics so much as I am interested in collecting some ideas on features for the project and/or reaffirming some ideas I already have about the design process. However, I'm aware some people will be less forthcoming talking about erotic RP if their name is attached to it. To that end, I've made a Google form to survey people anonymously if you prefer not to post your thoughts in this thread:

Whether you are currently playing an Erotic MU*, or haven't played an Erotic MU*, or have played one in the past, feel free to submit the survey if you have a few minutes to spare! I'm interested in hearing opinions from everyone.

What I can share about the project is going to be somewhat minimal as I don't want to taint the survey results too much. I'd like to make a single-universe original-setting game with a focus on erotic RP, with a social deduction element for some form of secretive, supernatural intrigue, but I'm open to changing some plans around if that doesn't turn out to be as interesting to a potential player base.

That said, if you do have thoughts on erotic game design, or just words of encouragement that you want to share, and don't mind having your MSB handle attached to it, feel free to post or PM me. If this general survey goes well I would like to make a more specific survey at some point as I continue the initial design process.

Even if the focus isn't on erotic RP(though it certainly could be) I'd just like to see more games that don't shame players for engaging in erotic RP. A lot of games nowadays have policies in place that amount to "do it but don't post logs about it or discuss it in any way" and I think that's a shame.

I'm interested. I have a few thoughts I don't mind sharing here:

1. I don't have much in the way of strong feelings for most of the questions asked, so alot of my responses were just 'neutral'. I don't care either way. However...

2. I think my biggest issue with Shangrila and it's multiverse setting is that it allows literally anything. Such as @bear_necessities dick cows or the horrors like Baskin Robbins. And that just ... I just ain't into it? I also have a general preference -against- playing with copyrighted characters (super heroes, characters from popular TV shows or movies), or real people. If it's someone's copyright or it's just too weird it makes me wanna run away.

3. I don't much care about whatever anyone's kinks are, right? Except... another big problem I have with Shangrila is the ageplay. I would absolutely love it if there was an Erotic MU* that drew a line in the sand and said: No, you can't have underage characters.

4. Similarly I'm kinda eeeeeh about non-consent and rape RP. On the one hand if both players are OOCly consenting to exploring that... ok, I guess? On the other hand, eeeeeeh, icky.

5. ....but I do absolutely love the idea of a robust crafting system and an IC economy on a sexmux. I'll be right there hunting dickcows for making armor with @bear_necessities !

I agree with @Cobaltasaurus to be honest. Multiverse TS game just feels really fucking played out. We need an actual theme to invest in, I'm kind of tired of the sex sandbox backdrop. That's why WoD is the most enduring TS theme in my opinion lmao.

Like damn, let me be a wizard who does sexy wizard things, but also I can do other wizard things, and Doom Guy won't suddenly walk in like "I'M GONNA FUCK YOUR SEXY WIZARD THINGS!!!"

edit: By the way, probably a good idea not to let people make characters under 18 and such. While this might seem obvious to many people, a lot of people seem super keen on the right to play and fuck child characters, and I'd just like an alternative where that is not a thing.

I wouldn't mind an Erotic MU* with a stronger theme, as long as the theme doesn't get in the way of having erotic play, if that makes sense? Although there's nothing wrong with having an Erotic MU* that focuses on a single small set of kinks. Like, I think there are niche MUs like...Shoujo Ai MU? Or that m/m superhero MU* I don't remember the name of. Where they lean into a specific kink constellation.

But, I admit, one of the things that appeals to me about a huge 'wide theme' MU* is the ability to get a whim, create a character for a specific scenario, and be able to (theoretically) find that scenario until I get bored with it, then drop the character without causing any distress to anyone else, or messing up any sort of plots.

It would be interesting! It would be a lot smaller, though - which comes with its own sets of 'downsides' for a sex-MU, since the drama is going to go through the roof. Especially if there's continuity and theme and infidelity (oh my!). Or, let's face it, perceived infidelity based on the fact that someone once pounced and snuggled someone else on a channel, and now that means THEY OWN THEM and how dare you try and break them up.

One good thing about the uber-MU*s is that you really can just nope out of any interaction you don't enjoy, and still have literally hundreds of other characters to play with.

Thank you everyone who's completed the survey and/or replied to this thread! I wanted to touch on a few of the sentiments expressed in this thread:

• Regarding multiverse. I also feel that a cohesive theme really helps set the mood of the overall setting, and that some restrictions on what players can make as characters helps set the theme as well. I am heavily leaning towards single-universe. I'm open to being convinced to think more about multiverse but at the moment, I'm not seeing as many upsides as single-universe offers.
• Characters under 18 won't be supported by this project, full stop.
• Seeing more games that don't shame players for engaging in erotic RP: 100% agreed! As this is an erotic MU* project it goes without saying that it'll be a shame-free zone, but I am aware of the potentials TS drama can reach and I think a community guide on avoiding creating it could help in that regard.
• Tentacles - somewhat agree.

I like having the option to do romantic RP with long term partners on those types of games, but I FTB for TS/erotic RP. I know that makes me insanely weird, but I do enjoy it.

I hate multiverse themes personally. I don't want to TS (if I did TS) Dante from Devil May Cry, I want to get to know a character someone put time and thought into - the player, not the creator of Devil May Cry.

It kinda sounds like what the existing games are - or tried to be - where most people just partner up for private RP and don't do much else. Being able to play characters from other series typically just ends with them looking for sandbox play from their original setting, which they can already get on existing games, so if you want people who stick to theme and participate, I'd say keep it original.

That said, I do kind of wonder about a game that's specifically set in an AU of a certain setting, but with a pervasive theme of lewdness and/or an allowance for characters to just be freaks. Superheroes or Star Wars or whatever. Or an original plot based adventure RP game of that sort in general. I can see why it wouldn't work out, but I'm kinda curious all the same.

Poll could maybe use an optional section for anonymous comments/suggestions of that sort.
