Paying for a MU*?

@thhppbbbt there are a few people in the community that you could offer me $500 to run a scene for and unless I had a bill to pay absolutely no way in fucking hell.

Getting paid to do what I do now does nothing to solve the fundamental issues that some players are entitled Karens that might be willing to pay for entertainment but don’t really respect the effort that goes into it. Attaching a paycheck to it just turns it into a shitty retail job and no thank you. At least now, if a player is being a creep or a jerk, I can just ban them or not engage with them and it doesn’t affect whether I can pay my light bill.
-
And on the flip side to this, there are simply staffers that are terrible GMs and storytellers and don't deserve to get paid for the effort(or lacktherof) of wasting player's time. So no, I don't think paying people to be storytellers would solve any issues.
So while yes, you'd remove the gripe that staff throw out(I don't get paid to entertain you) and then you're adding players becoming more entitled than they already tend to be. Now you just have entitled players and staffers. Granted, you're going to have that regardless of if you pay people or not, but I can just see it being so much worse.

Next you people will tell me @Ganymede isn't a catbot.
WHAT. YOU'RE MY PROOF THAT I'M REAL

Pretty sure it'll just pave the way to players asking staff, "If I pay extra can you GM me becoming a mushroom mage, controlling all fungi" or something.

I think I've hit on where the line for pay makes me uncomfortable.
While a thing like a tip jar after the fact (as appreciation) doesn't trigger the squick for me personally, prepaying/contracting for services just isn't what I would want to get involved with as a ST. Maybe if I could summon inspiration on demand I would feel differently but I wouldn't want it hanging over my head esp if I didn't know the other person and how they react to delayed gratification when money changes hands. I've noticed this is a common worry (I assume with cause!) because I have paid for many commissions over the years and have had to explicitly tell the artist/crafting person many times to please not apologize for delays, I understand the process takes time and they've all been people who have day jobs too. Some have sounded very distressed and I get it because I think feeling like you owe someone something is anxiety producing for me! Id much rather have someone shower with me with gifts/chocolate/$$$ after I've done the thing they liked.
And then there's less risk of having to deal with someone you thought was okay but surprises you by turning into someone who feels like they own you and you must account for all of your time to them until they get what they're owed. We have enough of thise folks even on standard volunteer mushes.

What if I just want to be able to travel along root paths? You know, become one with The Green?

I am due my admin cut.

The other factor is... as a ST, builder or general admin the price for my services is kinda vague. Some might say it's 0. Some might put the tag higher (minimum wage? less? more?). How much is it worth it to build a setting? Write wiki snipets to set up theme? Organize a PrP?
And then there is coding.
Let me put it in very simple terms. We can't afford to pay coders what they are worth in the marketplace. Even with crowdfunding paying a decent programmer to put 100+ hours is... expensive.
So either it's agreed upon that they do it because it's fun or well, we're kinda insulting them by throwing a couple of bucks their way.
The only cost that sorta maybe makes sense is paying for hosting.

I don't think any kind of pay model is intended to solve any current problems except to help pay for the cost of hosting a game.
I think a tip jar model would be the best way to go about it, especially if it was anonymous so no one felt any particular pressure to pay or feel beholden to anyone in particular.
A very clear, overly blunt statement about the fact that donations don't entitle you to anything should be attached to any donations page, along with a site policy that anonymous donations are to remain anonymous with any hints or comments about donating being incredibly bad form. Possibly subject to disciplinary action.
I don't think the concept of crowdfunding a game site is a bad idea. I don't know what it costs to host a game, a wiki, or a website. I doubt anyone should or would expect to make a living out of it. But for a lot of the reasons listed in the thread, it shouldn't be allowed to affect the game.
