That's not what I said. I said we do not have a freedom of speech, of any kind. The government can make laws at any time restricting what we can say, and where we can say it, and so forth.
-
@Tinuviel Whoa! Another expat in China! Cool!
-
@WTFE Nope. Australia.

I'm sure the lawyer-types floating about could explain it better than I... But freedom of speech in the US basically means you're free to express yourself without government censorship/involvement. Where in some cultures there have been times (and still are in places) where, say, speaking out against your country's leader can get you imprisoned (or worse). Freedom of speech says 'You have a right to your own thoughts, opinions, and counsel, without the government's influence.'
A lot of people -- especially kids whose schools haven't taught it properly -- think freedom of speech means 'I can say whatever I want whenever I want and no one can stop me.'
For the kids, on the forums I worked on, I'd often explain it as:
'If someone came into your home and began insulting you, you'd ask them to stop or leave. You wouldn't just stand there and allow it to happen. This site is privately owned and run. We want it to be a safe environment for everyone, so sometimes we have to ask you to keep those thoughts to yourself... or to leave.'It dumbs the concept down a lot, yes, but... they were kids.

Freedom of speech guarantees that you can say what you want (threats not included) and the government will not throw you in jail or take all your property for it.
It does not protect you from any other consequences that might come of you saying dumb shit. That's where people get confused.
-
Right, that's pretty much what I thought. Thank you for explaining.

This is a good way to look at it, if you are someone that doesn't want to toe the line when it comes to laws and regulations that actually infringe on the absolute right.

Nintendo NES Classic Edition, a MSRP for $60.00 and fucking re-sellers have blown the market so out of proportion on this thing now you can't find it for less than $300.00 and the places that would sell it for $60.00 are continually sold out. Sonovabitch.

Last week I saw people listing them on eBay for $10 grand.
-
@Auspice Oh I did not even realize they had hit that high. I figured wait for the rush to die down and the initial stocks to be refilled at the box stores and get one. Of course it does not surprise me that Nintendo does not sell this through their website.

Yeah - I suggested my sister buy this for the nephews as a cheaper than an Xbox option. I feel guilty now.

@Lisse24
Probably will not be until springtime before the bottom drops out on these crazy prices. -

There's other options for getting the older style of consoles. Sure it won't be THE NES from the 80's, but it will still play the cartridges. And Gamestop is currently selling all the old games it has. Play & Trade markets specifically towards the older consoles and tends to have the cartridges, too.

I've yet to get an emulator to function properly, and in looking at that link, nearly HALF the games on there (and all but one of the games I would want to play) don't even work for the emulators. Also, doesn't fix the problem for people that want a retro system for their kids to play on.

Right, which was the idea for my nephews. The games available on the Xbox are either way too babyish for them or a bit too hard. Old NES games would be just the right challenge level though. They don't take a lot of thinking, just hand-eye coordination.
-
@Lisse24 Check out Play & Trade and Gamestop. They have retro consoles that can play all the old Nintendo games.
edit: And they don't go over $60-70
-
I've done the emulator thing on my computer.
I hate it.
I hate the keyboard interface and unless I go out and buy a controller just for it (http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/1b4c/?srp=1 - $15-20 apiece), the modern controllers are hinky to map/use.
And then you have to hope the game was actually ported correctly.
So sue me if I want this nifty machine I just plug into my TV and get to play without headaches.

@Auspice Yeah the ease of use is what I wanted it for. I was going to get one for my brother for his wife, for Christmas, because her disability makes 'ease of use' tech devices best for her.
