Regarding the calf spasm, you can often curtail it by grabbing your foot and pulling the toes upwards to flex the entire foot (the opposite of pointing it). That forces your calf muscles to relax because their opposites are engaged. It will not stop the residual pain. But it's handy to know because many times you'll be on the edge of another spasm or several for the next hours-to a couple of days, and you can head it off if you immediately flex your foot to prevent the muscles in your calf from tightening.
I think potassium can help some people but low potassium will not help everyone and isn't always the cause. I am sorry though. I get those a lot, though usually now the warning tightening will wake me up and I immediately go to lean against the wall to flex my foot or do it manually to stave it off. Be careful about massaging or rolling immediately after a spasm. For some folks and in some situations it will send you right into another one.

@mietze the toe stretch works for me, but god DAMN does it hurt when you start. lol
-
If I wake up quick enough, I can stretch it out before the cramp hits but usually it is the cramp itself that wakes me.
The foam rolling is something I was recommended as like, a maintenance thing vs right after the cramp fo sho (good call out; I was remiss in mentioning that). Doing it on a regular basis has loosened up my calves enough that I've gone from getting those cramps regularly to relatively (thank god) rarely.
Plus it feels pretty dang good when you've got achy legs from like, a long day of walking!

I don't care what anyone says. The 2017 Power Rangers Movie was GREAT, and the soundtrack was BANGERANG. GRR.
Is this the right thread for this

@SinCerely I loved the PR movie. I was way better than I ever thought it would be.

@zombiegenesis My kids asked to watch it, it popped up on Netflix. I braced myself for the worst. I was happily surprised, I EVEN GOT THE REFERENCES, it was so great. And the music, totally well timed and spot on. I was impressed. And sad about the snowballing angst that probably gave it a bad rep.

@auspice So i dunno if this is related or will help, but I am diabetic, and i used to get the same fucking thing. Part of it was general ill health, but it happened every time I took insulin right before bed. It was connected (for me) to rapid sugar dropping + being in bed/laying down.
Now mostly I get cramps while swimming, but nowhere near as bad. I used to wake up with either shin or calf cramps and my leg twisting back unable to straighten.
-
If you are getting leg cramps after workouts, it may be due to your diet, and the absence of key electrolytes and/or amino acids. The old “eat a banana” tip isn’t a bad one.
It could also be due to dehydration. Remember: if you are swimming in a pool, the chlorine environment is actively drying you out. And if you’re swimming laps, you are sweating like crazy, even if you don’t feel hot or sweaty because you’re in water. Gatorade used to be my go-to during a 100-length workout.
-
@wretched Yeah, I started getting leg cramps a lot when I was hyperglycemic before I got diagnosed. Apparently it's related to neuropathy, so if you're starting to get a /lot/ of cramps, I'd definitely talk to a doctor.
Otherwise, the toe stretch works.
-
@ganymede @Pyrephox yeah i dont get the major cramps at night anymore, only int he pool. I might try the gatorade thing, they have a 0 sugar one now.
Re: Sweating and not feeling it. Thats the whole reason i swim. i can push myself and not feel like I am dying. It's been amazing for my health and motivation to keep working out. having a gym nearby with a pool open at 2am is great too.

Sugar is a weird thing for me. I am not diabetic, but- I tend towards low blood sugar. I go through these periods of time now and again where I have to keep a close eye on myself because if I start dieting (and thus cutting out carbs, sugars, etc...) ... my blood sugar will drop even more and I'll just get lethargic and weak and so on. This lovely thing was discovered when my father discovered his type 2 and my mom decided 'We could all serve to be healthier! No sugar or carbs for anyone in the family from now on!' and I ended up passed out one day from a really bad sugar crash. From then on I got to keep snacks and such in my room to help balance my shit out as needed.
But, that might be something to start adding to my mental checklist: if I start getting worse cramps around when I'm dealing with sugar imbalance issues (me and my doctors have never been able to pin down my overall leg issues; it'd be swell if I could narrow it down somehow!).

Ain't that the truth, friend.
When I was competitively swimming, I also experienced crippling foot pain after practices, which was due to me using my legs as my primary propulsion mechanism (as it should be). So, stretching your calves and feet before a swim also helps. Consider the calf-stretch along a wall too, or giving your foot the old grip-and-roll for a minute.
Good on you for the working out, though.
And that fathead dough recipe you gave me was the holy shitballs of the weekend.

Your cramps could be due to a selective amino acid deficiency, which is sometimes a side-effect of diabetes. Not having the right levels of amino acids like taurine can cause fatigue and cramping, and branched-chain amino acid supplements can lead to relief from cramping.
You might want to check with your doctor about taking some AA supplements.

The guy on my gym's Facebook group posting regularly about his newest lifting achievements. I don't mind people bragging about their PRs but goddamn he's tagging everything he does with #veganpowerlifting #vegangains #veganstrength, every damn time.
He's like a walking, breathing incarnation of that old joke: How do you tell if someone's a vegan? Wait five minutes, they'll tell you.

There's a difference between being a misanthrope and being a bigot.
A primitivist vegan is not a bigot, but is more-often-than-not a misanthrope under hipster clothes.
No, but the way your sentence was constructed seemed ambiguous enough for my brain to make the leap that you were describing racists and sexists as just misanthropes.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck you, 26-page RFI that I worked on until 2am.

@Ganymede reminded me of this so blame her.
I hate, hate, hate, hate the mindset that says "There is only good, or bad."
Sometimes, things are just 'fine' and that's perfectly okay! Great is the enemy of good, and all that.
