I heard they are some Tolkien haters over there.
-
@ThatOneDude Well, it is a game about monsters.
-
It's not anyone's fault they can't handle dry writing. Tolkein was /very/ dry, and the worst part was it was dry and then not descriptive in ways that helped...
So it was descriptive about things that didn't matter, but not descriptive when it needed to be.
I read the books, but they are not, in my opinion, literary masterpieces.
-
I took a class in college on Tolkien, specifically on the Lord of the Rings cycle and the Silmarillion. I had read Tolkien when I was a kid and, upon reading it as an adult, realized how dry and boring a lot of it is. He's great at world-building, for sure. I agree with @Arkandel there, but as a writer~
-
I love Tolkien's world. I hate his writing. If you would like a lovely take on said world - 'The Last Ring-Bearer' is recommended. The disgusting tribals vs. The unstoppable industrials.
Also, personally, as great a writer as he is...I see what you're doin' with them eagles, guy, and I hate it.
-
Guy Gavriel Kay is great at both world-building and characterization. Comparing a GGK novel to a GRRM one is like comparing gold to bull crap.
I realize this has nothing to do with the topic at hand. Game on.
-
Also, another great world builder is Robert Heinlein. He's able to make a believable world in a singular work, which seems to function and act on its own accord and how the reader supposes it should without having to stretch it out into multiple books. You can see this in The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress, and even in Starship Troopers.
But yeah, about Bump In The Night...
(It's raining in California, by the way. Thought everyone should know.)

That reminds me: Weather is fixed.
I have to implement the final piece, the "Can You See The Moon Right Now" calculator, but it's otherwise done.

One of these days, @Thenomain, I'll try out BITN (because it looks fucking cool as shit), and I will greatly appreciate your +weather code, similar to how I appreciated all of your other code in the past, because it's usually fucking great.

I love GGK. The ending of The Lions of Al-Rassan, argghh. It still aches a bit.
But comparing authors doesn't work. They have different styles, tell different stories, they cannot be objectively judged. Some people think Twilight is the best, to each their own.

And these people need to be chemically-sterilized or have their genitals removed by cauterization.
So, if my PC on BITN ever gets a lightsaber, you'll know what happened.
-
I was pretty skeptical about BITN but I have to admit it is pretty darn fun. There have been new players all last month. I hope more players give it a shot.
-
Is it a good game for people who haven't played much or any WoD?
-
@rebekahse I'm the wiki staffer, so I can't pretend I'm unbiased here -- but I would say yes, it is.
The reason why, though, is pretty objective: it's easier to learn just the mortal stuff than it is to learn the mortals stuff and the various splat stuff of all the other creatures you might encounter on a multi-sphere game. It makes it much easier to start out, and there is a lot less you need to know. (Smaller cost, too, since it's only one book to acquire.)
-
Coo. That actually kind of sounds like what I'm looking for, because at this point I still have no idea what one actually does on WoD games. You'd think I would, hanging out here, but the impression I've gotten is that it's mostly, "I'm a vampire, and also I work at the bait shop."

Vampire who runs a vape shop is my next concept.
