      @2mspris
      I force my children to bring headphones for their electronics. Not because I give any fucks about the people around me, but because -I- don't want to have to listen to the same goddamn 3 stanzas of a shitty game song or whatever fucking youtube video my youngest has decided he absolutely MUST WATCH RIGHT NAO OMG. So... to all those people who have sat near me and my kids? You're inadvertently welcome!

      The only time my kids are allowed to play the sound on a video game is if it's in their own bedroom (which they each have their own stuff to play on in their respective rooms), if they have headphones (but if we are in public they are only allowed to have one plugged in their ear, because I can't stand it if something is said to them and they seem to ignore it, or if they are so tuned out of what's going on around them that they fail to pick up on the things that might require their attention), or if I'm at work and not around to tell them to turn the volume off. I'm not a noise pollution from multiple sources-sort of person - it tends to give me a headache really fast.

      On the other hand though, they can play rock music as loud as they want in my house. 😄

      @Luna I literally handed a few bills to the lady I was waiting to pay to get out of that place, knowing it was probably over what my total was, told her to keep the change but I had to get out of that business and wouldn't be coming back. I got back to my car and my youngest son starts shaking his head and saying how much trouble he & his brother would be if they acted like that. 😒

      Parents who clearly should not be that.

      Who are incapable or simply don't care to teach their children how to behave in public, nor care about the fact that they are being obnoxious little shits. 1 woman with 4 children, and every child is playing a different video game on a different tablet computer, with the volume as loud as it goes so you can't hear anything except the sound of game.

      And if you ask if it's possible for the volume to be turned down slightly, you get cussed at by the middle child and mom starts to giggle.

      That's a thing that gets really bad in my library as well. It's an especially fun day when you have that plus an Amish family who are one day before their weekly bath, all standing together and circulation desk. I've started keeping Vick's in my box at work. 😬

      At the risk of having things thrown at me (though I would never push it on people), I liked LOST.

      From the stand point of it being a supernatural disaster flix. And I like shows/movies where almost everyone dies.

      @somasatori Well, as it happens I largely didn't have it because it just wasn't a cost my parents thought necessary/we had 6 kids in my family and we were poor. 😉 And then I just didn't know that it was a thing until I was in my twenties. That said, I was 22 yrs old before I ever had a home computer (with dial-up internet) and started mushing. I can effectively be called a late bloomer where it comes to online gaming.

      I'm all for training, but "online ninja training" kind of makes me go "wut"?

      I should say when I trained with that stuff, it was a good while before "online training" was a thing. We got in a car and drove an hour there to hang out for 2-4 hours. (And man I feel old thinking about how long ago that was.)

      @2mspris What is this I don't even....

      It's a martial arts school, originated from Japan and the first "US School" was opened in Dayton Ohio by Stephen Hayes. I live fairly close to Dayton and grew up with a step father who was a Navy Seal, who started training with this group for something to do to maintain physical activity, etc. It's something I started doing with him, essentially.

      @Darinelle I spent 6 years of my life training in this: http://ninjaselfdefense.com/

      It's really not a very good pick up line. 😞

      I've made a secret of who I was playing exactly twice in my many mu*ing years.

      One occasion I partially did it because @HelloRaptor told me that I have one of the most recognizable "mushing styles" and he would know me anywhere. As it happens, he didn't realize it was me until a year after the mu* closed and he posted looking for that person on WORA and I outed myself.

      The other occasion I had made a character many years ago, on Ashes 2 Ashes, where I found out that a few of my RL friends were also playing. Turns out that one of those friends was playing the character mine was involved with and this player was someone who was very easily embarrassed/extremely shy so I never let it be known that was me.

      @2mspris, @HelloRaptor, and @EmmahSue among others are people I know pretty much log everything, and it's not necessarily out of paranoia for having proof of anything; often it's so as to have a reliable source of information for things that happened and memory fails to recall.

      I can confirm, I do. I'll readily admit it started out as covering my ass because of less than ethical staffers and conflicts with other players that after repeated attempts to resolve on my own kept coming back and I wanted to keep a track record of it. But it has, since then, turned into just the easiest way to keep track of things and have a record of information that either other people expect me to know or that I want to know either for personal history/fun or my own organizational need.

      Anyone know what became of the player? The character was awesome and the player seemed a good sort from my interactions with him at the time. On my list of people I occasionally wonder what happened to them.

    • RE: Crafts & Things

      I do a lot of crafty-stuff, I grew up with a parent who sewed all of our Halloween costumes and a lot of clothes, etc. So I learned to do that stuff very early. (Quilting, cross stitch, embroidery, basic clothing.) The same with ceramics, my grandmother owned a ceramics shop for her entire life, so I learned to do that stuff early and would attend craft shows with her. For a while I used to make jewelry, dolls, beaded crafts and little scrap book stuff that I would sell at her shows. And I had phases of drawing, photography, graphic art, and woodworking. And I can cook and bake to about the level one would expect from a "farm girl". (And I do know how to kill & butcher a chicken.)

      These days the bulk of my craft-time is spent on crafts "for boys", because of my sons and their interests. I still sneak in time for drawing and colored pencils, very infrequently I still cross stitch, and I bake goodies like a crazy person at Christmas.

    • RE: Steps in deciding to run and setting up a MUSH

      I was going to say some things to this, but @Thenomain said pretty nearly every point that I was going to mention. So I'll just ad a couple of thoughts:

      Presumably then this is a "Steps in deciding to run and set up a WoD MuSH"? Because there are other kinds of mu*es, other game systems and settings. But your points do sort of lean in that direction.

      I've now been involved in the day-one to opening of 3 different games on the end of staff (and early-early on in 2 other games). I think a lot of these things depend upon the core staff group you have, be it a headstaff group or a single headstaffer with a core group of founding staff, as well as what specifically you want this game to be. If those core people know the systems/spheres you are going to use - I recommend that those people do the news files/game setting information writing. Those are the people with the vision and plan, more staff can be added later and there is such a thing as having too many people with too many opinions/perspectives that can make the game not what you initially mean for it to be. And if you are in the middle of trying to set things up, that is not the time you want to derail yourself by having to manage drama associated with removing someone from staff.

      I have sons who build models (planes, boats, cars, tanks, spaceships, etc.). I have had to make the OOC comment before pertaining to an unexpectedly long time between poses:

      <OOC> Sorry for that, my hand was superglued to a viking ship.

      It's fair to say the humor of it seemed to make the other person more understanding.
