Depending on where you played that never really stopped. That's been common place on MUs I've played on all along. It's up to staff to make players feel empowered to do that and trusting players to do it without wanting to micromanage everything.

See, my experience the last few years has been different. 80% or more of players just sit around engaging in BarRP or even just moaning about 'nothing to do' unless Staff (and only Staff) run +events.

I've had games where I'll run plots/events once a week and get maybe 4 people at best, while others sit on Pubchan and cry about nothing to do.

@auspice Yes I agree it has advantages in character building. That's its whole point. I thought we were talking about storytelling though.

People who are more comfortable with a system from the word 'go' (CG) are more likely to ST in said system. They want to have a grasp of what they're doing.

So if they feel confident in character building and how the sheets work and function, they'll have an easier time stepping into that roll of ST. They'll be able to confidently ask for certain rolls, for example, rather than floundering for 'What would be best in this situation...'

It all feeds into each other.

Something sci-fi with room for space merchants (ala Andre Norton's Solar Queen novels or other vintage 'space trader' SF of that era) would be amazing. So, you know, like Firefly but with 1000% less Confederate fetishism.

Well, Expanse would allow for space merchants too. But for my personal setting they are def. a part of things.

There's a whole society on one station nicknamed 'Junkers' so. 😛

I'll add a vote for Magician, and for system I'd suggest Word Mill's Mythic.

I've also not heard of this system. Got a link / PDF?

I'm happy to vet other systems. I'd prefer to. Because I honestly don't want to use WoD, even a streamlined version.

If you set aside the superpower stuff, I really don't see the appreciable difference between FS3 and nWoD.

      I have to wholeheartedly disagree.

FS3, to notice something: +roll Alertness
nWoD: Wits + Composure + any additional stuff from merits, which may include an 8- or 9-again... and so on.

When I 'run' in nWoD, I have to keep this on hand: http://files.meetup.com/3797562/Cheat Sheet - nWoD Master.pdf

      Another example from there:
nWoD: Foot Chase- Stamina + Athletics + eq bonus vs. Stamina + Athletics + eq bonus, extended and contested
      FS3: roll name/Athletics vs name/Athletics

When I ST on FS3, I just keep a character sheet in view as a quick-ref for skills. I'll often reference PC sheets before the scene so I know any useful BG skills they have. That's it. That is all I need.

I don't need multiple books (some of which contradict one another) or cheatsheets.

There could be a few reasons.

      • People who primarily phoneMU*. Some of those clients don't log, or if they do, do so sloppily.
      • Logging not working. There was a year or so, on my Macbook (before Sierra killed it entirely), where Potato wouldn't log. The logs would come up empty. I forget how I finally fixed it, but it wasn't in the help files, no one else could figure it out, and the bug I opened on it went ignored. If I wanted to log, I had to manually copy/paste.
      • Similar to the first point... People who use web portals. Arx and Faradays' AresMUSH both have these and some people have begun using them more and more. They don't, AFAIK, export to logs at all.

I'm sure there's more situations where someone wouldn't / can't have auto-logging, but I don't have them off the top of my head.

Game of Kings guy is who I think he's being mistaken for.

I'm grateful to whoever drove Eternal Crusade in the ground because I have seethed at that game for a long time for stealing a lot of its 'theme' from another game.

    • RE: Meanest (But Funniest) Thing You've Done in a Game

I have another one. Again, from player perspective, because I apparently am great at ruining the best laid plans.

My first ever RL TT was Everway (which I still have a fondness for and wish the tarot deck in my own copy was complete). When I made my character, I'd been in the middle of the Riftwar (Raymond E Feist) books. I decided I wanted a 'bag of holding'-ish like Nakor had. The ST allowed it because wtfever, right?

Well, I collected everything. And I kept a running list of it. One of the things I collected was vials of sakura petals left behind by a goddess who would show up from time to time (usually to send us on quests).

The first time I did this, I got a 'wtf why' face from the ST. He had no idea why I would even care to do so, but he allowed it. On the list it went.

Fast forward months. We met every week and about eight months down the line, we're finishing up a quest line through Hell. We reach the exit portal when a massive demon gets in our way.

      I'm up first in initiative.

I look over my list of "stuff in the sack" and there it is. This stack of vials of pure deific essence.

I throw them all at the demon.

The ST's eyes go wide as the implications sink in.
The demon was not killed, but it was hurt/stalled long enough for us all to get through the portal without having to fight.

He was a bit more... careful about what he let me collect after that.

      The guy likes to lie.
He likes to convince games to let him become a coder, then creates 'back doors' for himself while stealing code, DBs, etc.
He'll start new games and then abandon them.
He'll read players +mails, become possessive over female players and use what he finds in +mail against them.

      etc etc.
Lotherio is so very much not this guy.
