That's one of the places where mush writing and novel writing differ dramatically. One aims for instant gratification in the here and now and to hell with a typo or a repeated verb. The other aims for perfection and goes through five edits to get there. In the end, the novel will have the better prose (one should hope!).
I never edit my poses (unless I'm STing and then they get a pass for clarity).
My professional writing gets bogged down by the internal editor.
That's part of why I enjoy MUing, tbh. I can send the internal editor home for the day and just write.

Have him hmu if/when he's single. Also, only if that selective ability isn't gender dependent. Also, I get top bunk.
Look, you have a partner you're happy with.
LEAVE SOME FOR THE REST OF US, GAWD.

So, I didn't read the last four pages, and while I adore you all, I don't think it'd be a good use of my time.
ANYWAY, I wasn't trying to equate authors = RPing, though I get totally why it was read that way and feel it's a valid conversation (again?) for other to take on.
I was focusing on how it's fun to do terrible things to characters.
Excuse me as I go over here thanks.
Welcome to msb.
But to that point: I love to do the same.
Unfortunately a lot of people don't and/or treat you like you're an attention whore if you do so I'm often super hesitant to do terrible things to my PCs these days unless I'm very comfortable in an environment.
This is for those books you think might be under appreciated or not well-known.
I'll kick it off with this:
The Peacemakers (The Nemesis Engines, Book 1)
Fair warning: my friend wrote this. However, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It's somewhat marketed as 'steampunk,' but there's very little of that there. Honestly, to me, it's much stronger in the pulp category. If you like alt history and pulp ala Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, you'll probably enjoy it.
I hope he finishes book 2 soon, but he's a v. busy man.
EDIT: Link fixed. Apparently my clipboard still had the link to one of my short stories. cough Sorry!

I take no responsibility for this derail
The guy who tried to rape me years ago tries to contact me every so often (when I still lived in OH, he actively stalked me). It's passive usually, like following my social media accounts from new accounts. Sometimes he'll email me.
But goddamnit it still makes me ill whenever I see his name pop up.
(also why are we assuming every single person makes every single character for the purposes of TS. Says more about the person assuming that than anyone else tbh)

I like Shang's '+glance' for the 'more than a short desc, but just the facts'. It has skin, eye, and hair color, species(? I think?), height and weight/build, and displays under the short desc line.
I've been on a couple games that have had things like this and it is handy because, f'real, digging through someone's desc to remember if they're tall or short or slim or built or red-head or bald or... is a PITA because not everyone constructs descs in the same order. So add in purple prose and ugh.
Like, my descs go from height to build to general physicalities to hair to facial features. But other people go in the opposite order. And others mix things up. And there's nothing wrong with that, mind you! But it makes 'at a glance' tricky.

Well, I don't think it's too fucking hard to figure out why given their comments....
Yeeeeeah, that's generally the case. The incel sub on reddit is just full of guys who prove over and over why.

Whenever someone describes themselves as attractive and then uses Tom Hiddleston as their PB I first double check to make sure they aren't playing some kind of were-ferret and then I immediately complain to staff. It's just the right thing to do.
this, but Blueberry Cummerbund and an alien.

@thenomain When the phone updated to the new one, I felt exactly the same way. More clutter, less useful info. At least there's a dark screen version, but it is so not worth the trade-off.
Mac Skype is still the same. Thank god.
But yeah, the phone one is worse than the new Windows version. I had to log into Skype on my phone one day and just... so much rage.

I won't play with someone with an anime pb. Full stop.
So against my better judgement, I accepted my instructor's offer to go over my week 1 script (act one of a TV episode) via phone conference rather than just receive his written notes.
I figured: sure, I've got receiving harsh criticism in text down, but I should learn to handle it in person.
I wish I had listened to my gut.
This man is an ass.
This wasn't just harsh criticism.
He never said a single positive thing. He cut me off constantly. He was practically yelling at me at times.
At one point, he misheard me. I tried to correct him. He snapped: "I know." and continued on with the misunderstood stuff.
The changes he wants me to make make no sense in places. Like it turns New Girl (the show the script is a spec for) into more of a drama than a comedy.
I had a 'part 1' to this class where we did our outlines. In a class taught by someone else, but that he designed. I got a 100 on my final outline. My instructor and classmates loved it. This guy? Wants me to throw out 2/3rds and rewrite based on what he wants (which is, again, more drama than comedy).
And the final lovely thing:
I emailed him last week after I watched the lecture recording. In the recording, for all the other show options we had to write for, he had script format tweaks. 'I know in Modern Family they do this, but I want you to do that instead.' etc. But he had none for New Girl. So I emailed to ask: 'Hey, is there anything in their script formatting that I shouldn't do?'
He said no, use their format as is.
Well, part of the call was chewing me out for not tweaking my format.
I admit it, I was crying at one point. Just being cut off constantly and chewed out... That is not getting critical feedback on your work. And I wasn't even trying to forcefully stand my ground on things. I was trying to explain why I wrote things a certain way to help him better understand (since he made it clear he never read the outlines we turned in the first day of class).
I'm going to be lucky to pass this class and I'm already done caring.

In fairness to people picking tiny, fragile-looking characters for their hardcore warriors that has been something of a trend in Hollywood and other visual media. I think the only athletic looking action star that comes to mind is Michelle Rodriguez.
Silje Torp! Gwendoline Christie! Kaley Cuoco! VJ Bani! Sydelle Noelle! Angela Basset! Olivia Munn! Brie Larson!
Ok maybe I have a type.
Frankie Adams!

This wasn't just harsh criticism. He never said a single positive thing. He cut me off constantly. He was practically yelling at me at times.
It took Phil Lord and Chris Miller almost 15 years to get a project of their own up off the ground again, and for crowds to appreciate their humor.
That said, when you're ready you should ask your instructor to put all of his criticism down into writing. And then, you should forward that onto his supervisor, along with the accounts of everyone else in your class who probably went through the exact same thing.
Abuse comes in many forms, and always breeds in darkness.
I hate that I began crying, but being cut off and snapped at every time I tried to explain myself... Especially when he'd ask me to explain and then 'NO. Stop talking and listen!' ...it just got to me and I found myself (silently) crying for a bit. I was just so frustrated.
At one point, I did manage to explain: 'I did this this way because in part 1 of the class, we were told...'
'You just misunderstood him.'
I got a good grade in that other class. I don't think would have if I had misunderstood things.
I am definitely going to be talking to my advisor about it. I accepted the phone conference because I know it's important to transition from just written criticism (which allows you time to process/react) to live (where you have to stay composed and react on the spot)... But he wasn't professional. Asking me a question and then cutting me off isn't. Ranting on at length when I've already said I understand isn't. Not being able to say even one positive thing about my work isn't.
I mean, shit, we students can lose professionalism points in our grade if we don't say at least one positive thing to our classmates in feedback/review.

@Derp is referencing the horrible thing certain people do to mac and cheese which is put it in the oven and let it bake until it is crunchy pasta.
It's always the most disappointing thing to be served at a dinner.

Someone joined the online conversation who said she now works at a television network and owes her success getting into the industry to <instructor>.
...did they verify this was an actual student or a real person? Because it's not like the world hasn't seen sock puppet accounts popping up to do damage control for someone before.
I have no idea, but I wouldn't be surprised.
I'll revisit the idea of a formal complaint in a couple days when I'm not fighting strep.
