RE: Regarding administration on MSB
@ganymede said in Regarding administration on MSB:
I can verify that there are people who believe as Faraday does, and who don't come by this place with their ideas for the reasons she's stated. I can't speak for why Faraday remains to voice her position, but I think it is because it's not just her position. As a person who is employed to speak for others, I can empathize with holding on and repeating what has been said because it needs to be said. Take that for what it's worth.
I would like to note, in following up both Faraday and Ganymede... That I have had people come to me, since I've been a moderator, expressing their desire for a more constructive community to discuss things like game design, code, and so on.
I won't out these people because I assume they had their reasons for reaching out privately versus opening up in a thread like this. But they do exist, they do want more. What I've done to help them 'be the change they want to see' (as the saying goes) is to encourage them to try posting. Some have done so and of those, a few have seen success and some have just felt further frustrated.
There is this tendency (Arkandel has phrased it well above), I think, to go for extremes around here. A lot of us, if we dislike the idea, will be so adamant that it treads into not only tearing down the idea, but the person involved. Not everyone does this, nor does it happen on every thread, but it happens often enough that it has cowed some members into not wanting to speak up at all.
I think my thread on weighing three separate game ideas went well. It gave me a lot to think about and I'm still investigating some things. But it could have, just as easily, gone in a wildly different direction. Imagine if some of the people who dislike me had used it as a platform to express that dislike and to undercut all of my ideas? I have (we all have) witnessed that happen to various extremes.
I won't campaign for being rid of the Hog Pit, but I understand why some people dislike it. I also understand why some people value it.
But my personal goal here (not a forum goal or vision; my own) is to encourage those constructive, creative, and exploratory discussions and to hopefully keep them in that realm.

Get out and vote for something, it's not that hard.
I do feel that people who refuse to vote sort of give up all right to bitch.
(And before 'but voter suppression!!!!' note my wording: 'refuse to vote.')

Disney buying Fox.
Fox owns the Alien franchise.
Xenomorphs are born of a Queen.
Thus, Xenomorphs are Disney Princesses.

RE: How should IC discrimination be handled?
@faraday said in How should IC discrimination be handled?:
It's just a little disconcerting sometimes when there's a disconnect between theme and RP.
This is something I've just come to accept, sad to say. Every game I've ever played, there's some level of disconnect between theme and RP.
We've discussed it here ('why are there beach parties in a constantly dangerous post-apocalyptic scenario?' 'where are these military members finding time to constantly hang out an drink during a war?' and so on)without any real solution beyond: encourage your players to play to theme and trust that the good players will help.
There will always be people who treat your setting as set dressing that only applies when they feel like it. That goes beyond matters like PC/NPC discrimination.

RE: An Apology to BSO and BSU.
I will note that the suicide of Marcus was not a single incident. He's done it on other games, too.
He did it on Unification twice and on 5th Kingdom.
So it's not like it was an accident, a mistake, or a 'one off' situation.

RE: Good or New Movies Review
The Last Jedi hate isn't even "fanboy" hate. It is entirely the same hate we saw for the new Mad Max. It's coming from the MRA camp. It's hate for Kelly Marie Tran because she's an asian (and cute, but not 'hawt') actress taking a major role in a movie. It's hate for Vice Admiral Holdo (Laura Dern), another female character in a role of leadership which 'hurr durr is forcing children to think men are evil!!!111'
And same as we saw with Mad Max, they'll flood all the channels they can with bullshit to make it appear legit. These aren't actual fans. They never were fans. These are just tiny-dicked assholes who feel their manhood is threatened because 'oh no they put more ladies and minorities in a movie cuz they's wipin' out menfolk'
The Bright issue is probably Netflix-related. Netflix has hurt network television in that it's shown it's a contender re: television shows and it's done a number on the decade-old model. If it comes in and shakes up the movie model too? Oh man, there's gonna be issues, y'all. (Though I'm mad at Netflix 'cause how y'all gonna cancel Marco Polo?!)

@apu
Even in this thread, he lies about others, attempts to misdirect to others, tries to misrepresent other people... At no point does he well and truly take responsibility.
I appreciate this thread for one thing. I have been wanting the community to see his behavior for what it is for some time now, but it has not been my place because to do so (myself) would have required telling other peoples' stories, which I could not (would not) have done.

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
@miss-demeanor said in Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.:
I will admit, my job forces me to multitask constantly.
More and more jobs are expecting this, despite the studies to the contrary. Companies don't give a shit. They just know they can get more 'work' done with fewer employees and what are you going to do? You need the job.
And they make unreasonable promises to their clients, shareholders, etc., then pass the buck off to you.
I spent a chunk of time yesterday reassuring my team: 'I know we're being pressured to hit 12 tickets an hour, guys, but I'm not pulling it off, either.' (As team lead, the person with near-perfect QA, etc., I'm looked at as the person to emulate.) They were all really stressing out over this and one guy piped up how he didn't know if he'd be able to do it.
One by one, they all admitted none of them were at that number. So I reassured them hey, yeah, I've pulled it off maybe twice. Between ADD and the sheer number of tools and things we have to check, the sheer amount of multi-tasking (keep track of the client chat and the internal chat and...)... a ticket every 5 minutes? C'mon. Let's be real.
(And yeah, they want me at that number and I'm not even at my desk the full day because on top of working tickets, I'm also a team/office lead, so I have to: help people with their tickets, liaise with the manager, run down two flights of stairs anytime someone rings the door bell, etc etc...)
Multitasking is garbage, but it's become a required evil in corporate and I don't see it going away because upper management has found it as a way to get 'numbers.'

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff
So for the last couple years, my tax returns have been... disappointing, to say the least.
2015 tax year: Had to pay (went up in income / moved states).
2016 tax year: Began school too late in the year for the tax credit (so got a rather pathetic return; less than $100).Which meant I just... really wasn't expecting much. At all.
I just finished my taxes. I'm getting enough that I can get a car. I can get the cheap sort with low monthly payments I've been planning... and still have money left over.
I'm not entirely convinced this isn't a dream or something and I won't wake up.

RE: Make it fun for Me!
@thatguythere said in Make it fun for Me!:
I will be honest my fun is the main goal of RPing for me, or any other leisure time activity I take part in. I will do my best to also make fun for others, on a much we are both the suppliers and consumers for the fun. If we fail to supply then we will have no fun that is true, but unless I am getting some other compensation I won't be in a scene long unless it is also fun for me.
This right here.
Not knowing what's going to happen is the whole point of this for me.
As an author, I always know what's coming next when I write. I know what lurks around the corner. I know what everyone's deep dark secrets are. I know what the big plot twist is. I know everything. It gets boring after a while.
So I roleplay because I don't know what's coming next! I don't know what your character's secrets are! I don't know what the ST has planned! It's in the not knowing that I find enjoyment!
But at the same time, when I'm just a warm body in a scene; when I'm just there for Suzy Q to do all the things, I stop having fun. I want to engage! I want to feel involved! When I go three, four, rounds of just posing to myself... I feel deflated. When I pose a reaction to you, you over there, and that person over there and none of them respond back to me because I'm not the ST or I'm not the person they think is holding all the tricks or I'm not Mr. HotShot... I feel frustrated.
That's right guys: it happens to me, too.
(I've had conversations with plenty of folks, even some people here on the boards, along the lines of 'How do you always get RP so easily?!' Guess what. I've totally been in the scene where I spend five rounds posing to myself. Happens to the best of us.)But the most fun for me is in not knowing what happens next. It's also the best way to stretch my legs as it were. It's like improv for the writer. I don't know what the other person is going to throw at me! I have to think on my feet!
So I can totally have fun, definitely! In just about any scene!
Just, y'know... engage with me, include me, give me something to do. Don't hog the spotlight.

RE: MU Things I Love
Finally getting to the part of a plot you've been working the better part of a month on. Esp. a large plot that has a lot of moving parts and other PCs could have (and nearly did!) interfere with.
I've had so, so, so many times over the years where I poured a lot of time and effort into plots and the climactic scenes (for me!) never happened. Either the ST lost steam, the other people needed lost interest, or other things just never came to fruition. So actually getting to see things through for the part in it all that I was waiting for (this is the point that I've been trying to get to since the very first scene I was personally involved in in the plot) is very exciting.
