Thing 1) this just cause a longer account of what's happening in the room/AI/whatever (kids plotting to kill parents) would be interesting.

My concept for it is to delve further into the psychiatrist (McClean) and use him as the protagonist. Expand on the whole world since it's very obviously a cyberpunk (though the term didn't exist back when the story was written) world. You have an automated home that caters to everyone's needs. A 'nursery' that gives children a fully immersive (holodeck-like) experience to play out stories.

I see it being a man investigating similar cases and trying to uncover what's going on behind the scenes of the 'Happy Home' megacorp.

Whenever anyone mentions Harpers Tale, I'm reminded that I've likely been playing with some of you FOREVER, but that game is so far back in the reaches of my mind I remember nothing other than a) I was there and b) I was kinda twinky in that new-to-mushing way.

If it makes you feel any better, the v. first time I logged in to Harper's Tale (in '98), I saw people in The Flying Mug, thought 'oh god that is not proper at all this game is ridiculous' and logged off to go back to Dragonsfire until someone (so politely, oh god, they were probably laughing so hard) told my very young, naive self that it was the name of a tavern and I had an 'oh, oh god' moment and went back to properly create a character.

@Auspice and I have a long history of her going "Dude, I warned you. You gotta stick to people you know" with me replying "I KNOW BUT... I should just be able to RP with whoever comes along but but but..."

      It's true.
      Oh lawwwwwwwd it's true.

So many times of @Ghost being like 'hey Auspice check out this red flag'

Me: 'Dang, that's a big red flag, maybe you should call the play.'
Ghost: 'But it could be an interesting story.'

      Couple weeks later....
Ghost: 'Hoooooooooooooooly shit have I got a story for you.'
      Me: .oO(HERE WE GO AGAIN.)

I love Ghost, but his desire to keep OOC/IC separate makes him ignore some big ol' red flags.

This is why I do stick to certain people I know and can trust for stuff like relationship RP. Because it's a big ol' field of landmines. Sometimes I step out of the comfort zone and take a chance (and the last time I did that did lead to one of my best damn friends so hey sometimes it does work!), but for the most part, I'd rather leave some of the riskiest fucking RP to where I know it'll be safe.

(And I am using men/women here tho I have flirted with, interacted with, etc. those who are trans- or flexible or... but this is a 'for sake of argument' conversation so.)

Generally speaking, those of us who are trans and still operating within the binary actively prefer to be included in the group "men/women." 😛

This is how I believe and operate but I've had people get very mad at me for this and so I try to uh
      Offer disclaimers just in case?

I know you are trans but imo you are a woman.

      @Auspice

I TOTALLY agree with that, personally.

I just also see people here going, "No, I don't enjoy talking OOC about stuff," and I feel like even that request is going to fly in the face of what they want. It feels like then it just... hangs there. Forever. Because you're not comfortable continuing to RP and they're not comfortable working things out OOCly to come to an agreement, then nothing ever gets resolved because neither person is comfortable bending. So I still don't think there's going to be a solid resolution.

I think there's also a middle ground to be had.

I don't always need or want to discuss everything in advance OOC, but I'm fine with a pause to do so in the midst of things if need calls for it.

To me that's the middle ground. The 'Hey can we discuss this one thing' before moving on.

Don't ask if your character can kiss mine. Don't wait for her to make the first move. Just do it. If she doesn't want it she'll make it clear. 😛

      @Ghost said in Favorite Youtubers?:

Lost In Vegas two black guys who aren't metalheads (primarily rap/r&b) listening to metal songs for the first time and critiquing. They also share their own favorite music with metalheads.

If I wrote a thesis about my theory that heavy metal and rap are both sides of the same coin (only with 2 different audiences), this would be part of my chief argument.

In a similar vein is this guy. He's only ever known hiphop and has been expanding his music knowledge.

All his videos are p good, but holy shit his reaction to Bohemian Rhapsody is PURE WHOLESOME.

    • RE: Separating Art From Artist

@Tinuviel said in Separating Art From Artist:

All that said, cancel culture is extremely dangerous. Especially on Twitter, where a few hundred characters can easily be misinterpreted - and drama propagates faster than explanation or apology. I'm not saying that any of the mentioned authors/artists are right, or not bigots, just that the idea of summarily eradicating a person's work based on speculation is a dangerous undertaking.

It also gets unfairly applied based on how well-liked the person is at the moment it occurs.

We've seen people have their career ruined because a stupid tweet made in HS is found (and none of their current behavior showcases them as being that person anymore). But then, for example, we saw James Gunn get initially 'cancelled' due to tweets he'd made years ago... and everyone campaigned for him to be reinstated and commented how unfair it was.

Which, it was, re: Gunn. But it left a bad taste in my mouth to see some of the same people supporting him being the ones who will rail on someone else who isn't someone they're a big fan of.

    • RE: Privacy in gaming

Also, another point: in part, your privacy is on you.

Not in the scenario of 'is an admin reading my scenes?' If they are that's on them.

But in regards to, say,'Can someone Google my name and find me?''Does my social media give away too much?'
These are the considerations that often lead to privacy concerns.

I've known people who think just because they don't have a Facebook, they can't be found. But they didn't pay close enough attention when, say, registering to vote and allowed their district to make their data public record so now all someone needs to do is throw their name in Google and: oh hey I have your name, address, phone number, political party..........

To me it's a scale of importance. You can't find me on Google (without presumably already knowing a good deal about me), but if someone thinks my RP is good enough to snoop? Whatev.

      Joss Whedon.

I have personally met plenty of people who have decided they now hate Buffy and Firefly and Dollhouse because of what he turned out to be. Shows that had strong female characters (one of which was a p important show for many geek girls growing up to see 'omg female character who kicks ass and is independent and...'), have actors who were and continue to be great... it is not hard to find people who sneer and scowl and get angry at you for still liking them.

'But Joss Whedon...' yes, he turned out to be a piece of shit for how he treated his ex-wife. But those shows weren't a solo act. And even a broken clock is right twice a day. So he turned out to be a piece of shit. But he (along with others! that's the important part!) made some good things.
