Thankfully, the service at the In-n-Out I go to has been fantastic every time.

...tho I'd prob still go regardless. Cuz In-n-Out.

    • RE: What's your nerd origin story?

I'm another 'grew up around it' sort. My father was a nerd (he's a developer), but he's also hyper religious, so what I was allowed to read / be exposed to was sort of weird. Fantasy-wise, it was only Tolkien and CS Lewis (Tolkien being Catholic and CS Lewis being ultra-religious in his own ways), but sci-fi was 'anything goes' sort of deal (book-wise: TV/movies it had to be kid-appropriate). So I saw Star Wars, Star Trek, Dr. Who, etc. all growing up. I had this gorgeous illustrated edition of The Hobbit and my dad's first edition copies of Narnia........ until my brother destroyed them in a fit of jealous rage (and I got the 'shrug, sibling rivalry, ha ha!' talk and never got any replacements: things I'm still really bummed out over being a book lover). I devoured books. Even a lot of fantasy because my parents....... kind of gave zero shits about me. It was this mix of their old school 'give kids freedom' and a sort of focus on my brother(s) in this 'we wish we'd had a son first' mentality. Even at the age of 7, they let me go wherever I wanted in the neighborhood and the only time there was ever a panic was the day that a neighbor found me just hanging out after dark and got concerned and brought me in and my mom actually had a 'wait, oh god, uh-' and started going door to door and found me just having dinner.

...then I got the 'be home by dark' curfew.

I didn't find out my mom was also kind of a nerd until I was a teenager. She's hugely into horror films and even loves sci-fi horror. She is not as wildly religious (tho she was homophobic until I was going through my own self-discovery and had a rather big upset at her as a teenager) as my father and I think he probably forced her to keep that under her hat for a long time. But she and I definitely share that and once I was old enough, it was something we began experiencing together. It is one of my favorite things about my mom, I admit. She is not the sort of woman you'd expect to love horror films, but she does!

I did still, until I was like, 17, have to continue the 'hide away any interest in fantasy' tho. There was a really fun 'sit down and be lectured' experience when my parents discovered my MUing wherein I was told (super cereal y'all) that if I ever saw the word 'chaos' online, I needed to come find them right away so they could have an exorcism done because the word 'chaos' summoned demons into our home.

      ULTRA RELIGIOUS CHILDHOODS ARE FUN.

I was able to pay my rent for another month.

I really really love this right now.

I may not be able to pay it in May unless I find a better job. But right now I have a place to live and that's fucking awesome.

      Ohhhh the potlucks.

When I worked at Verizon, my Indian teammate brought his whole family in for our potluck and his mother didn't get or just didn't care that we only had to bring a dish apiece.

She'd bring a whole spread and I loved it.

Indians just aren't the same nowadays. You gotta get a pre-1953 model. Everything since is really just a knock-off marketing off the name. So it wouldn't be worth it to buy one anyway!

I'm thankful I've never had friends who pull April Fools jokes.

Most of my friends, we just share around our favorite websites/videos (like the one I shared in the Random Links thread).

Probably the best April Fool's joke. It's.... not really SFW? I mean, visually it is, but the uh... I mean... if someone was only hearing the audio they'd be concerned. >.>

I haven't been in an ST'd action-y scene in a while. Been in some that are more sort of casual, 'get into the plot' or info dump-y, but not one that's got ze action. So tonight's scene on Notion was awesome. ❤ (As someone put it: all it was missing was a wizard to be D&D-esque)

Especially considering my Caitian was the one that opened the crate of catnip the away team discovered. I'm almost sad that we had to wrap the scene for time on that pose because I'm still giggly imagining the cadets dealing with a stoned El-Tee who just got a face full of DRUGS.

Actually that sounds like a pyramid scheme.

It's not a pyramid scheme, but it's honestly the 'new way' that people are being trained. My old boss was trying to foist it off on us. We had a training session where we were being told our users were 'our customers' and a coworker and I gagged at it all. Our boss got all huffy and went 'Well, YOU'RE ALL my customers, you know.' My coworker had outright laughed at him for that.

I don't want a boss who views me as a 'customer.'

Eventually, I'm just going to hang all my desktop parts on the wall next to my desk, with all my cords strung out very cleanly. It'll look great. Make it look artistic as fuck.

Spending a good hour at Bath and Body Works smelling candles and then taking home my two choices.

It's a dumb little thing. But I love candles. I'm annoyed that wallflowers don't really make an impact in my apartment, whereas the three-wick candles do. Maybe it's the fact I have ten foot ceilings? Not sure on that, but I suppose for 800 square feet for my apartment, two isn't enough. But yet, one candle can do that job just fine?

Still, while I'm not really a fan of overly flora scents and prefer more woodsy type fragrances and Bath and Body Works selection isn't all that great(for me, at least)until fall/winter I've found some I really like.

....now I just have to clean.

I still have carefully packaged candles from a trip to the Yankee Candle Co flagship store many many years ago. I have an entire bin full of various candles and candle-making supplies. Candles are ❤ (and handy, too! I mean, power outages, romantic evenings, demon summoning rituals...)

@Auspice Most people with large salaries are always one bad year away from being an hourly wage slave. I wish more people at that level acknowledged that.

The number of people I know with college degrees who got sick or had some other life event that got them let go and can't find their way back into their old field is pretty high.

I mean, I've been out of work almost a month. Had a bunch of interviews. But the only job offer I've gotten is nearly $5/hr pay cut. And not even remotely related to my field. I'mma have to break my lease, move most of my stuff into storage / get rid of it.

So yeah, shit is real yo.

      @dev

I honestly feel like everyone in the US should be required to spend a certain amount of time in some customer service job, be it retail, food service, or a call center (since not everyone can physically handle retail/food service as those are more physically demanding). Just some job that makes them serve the public and interact with the public. I think it'd reeeeeeally change peoples' perceptions and interactions with the world at large quite a bit.

The autobot ones are all right, but I mostly shared that photo for the GIANT GROOT one at the top over what I assume is the escape key. I use escape often enough that having to try to navigate that thing would be aggravating to all hell!

And I've seen photos before where people have these things like, dead center in their keyboards. JUST WHY.

      Reviving this thread because...

can anyone explain 'artisan keycaps' to me and why?

      Seriously:
      alt text

      What's the point?

      alt text

Doesn't it makes those keys effectively useless?

      alt text

I don't care how 'cool' it looks, how do you comfortably use those things?

      alt text

Someone please help me understand the phenomenon.
