      We get pockets.

      You get cookies.

I'll be honest I think pockets are better but cookies really push that issue.

But cookies are a non-issue you can put cookies in pockets they just get a little sqiushed which is alright. Unless you are eating non-soft cookies than you are just a Philistine.

Squished soft cookies are not alright. The average man pants pocket is not suitable as a cookie repository.

Cargo pants are where it’s at.

Soft cookies that aren't fresh baked always taste kinda like they're a little... rotten or something to me.

I finally moved my yarn and embroidery/x-stitch from a moving box into a rubbermaid bin. Amongst it, I found a bunch of sculpey (clay).

      I need some project ideas!

those of us who help with hosting begin setting up Ares installs for others.

Random side note. The standard server setup script installs a single redis database instance as a global system service. If you're going to be running multiple ares installs on a single server with different usernames, each user will need their own redis instance. This article may help.

This particular server is on Debian, which was part of the tinkering involved, but noted! πŸ™‚

By and far it wasn't too bad of an install/setup. Web portal actually went smoother than my last trial earlier this year when I briefly had a droplet to mess around with. πŸ˜„

      @faraday said in AresMUSH Updates:

@auspice Maybe I'm just being dense and not understanding where the hangup is...

      The script does stuff like:

echo -e "${ARES_INSTALL_TEXT} Create an ares user"
      adduser --disabled-password --gecos "" ares

I assumed that as you walked through the script to see what needed to be installed for a custom environment, you'd just remove/change those bits, just as you would for any other custom server environment quirk.

Is it just because the /home/ares path shows up in a couple of places? If that's the issue then I could probably make that a variable in the shell script so you only have to change it in a single place, at least.

What I really don't want to do, though, is add all kinds of "Do you want to do this? What username do you want?" type of if/else questions to the super-simple automatic installer, because that kinda goes away from the goal of making it super-simple πŸ™‚ A system admin is going to know the answers to those questions easily enough, but Ares is intended to be installable by folks without admin experience. Extra questions make the installation more intimidating.

Oh, for sure. The username was really the kicker. I think if it was a single variable, that'd make a big difference. Like I said, that was the big one. πŸ™‚

      @faraday

We were able to modify most of it without trouble, but that was the big piece of feedback he passed along to me: the username. Everything else, totally understandable (altering scripts, making adjustments). Most of it makes sense, such as ports, et al.

But the default username was one of the bigger ones we realized might be a trip because of how early it comes up in the setup.

    • RE: AresMUSH Updates

One piece of feedback I have (working with someone on installing Ares on a non-Ubuntu server; he has root, so tagteaming it)...

I know updating scripts to make it a more clean/easy process on other servers may be much further down the road, but something more short-term, possibly:

The script assumes your username will be ares. Which is fine if you're setting it up on a Droplet/your own server. But if you manage a server for people (some of us do!), that's not always going to be the case. It definitely won't if those of us who help with hosting begin setting up Ares installs for others.

Can the script be altered, perhaps, to input the username of the account that will be used for the day-to-day operations?

(We can, just won't happen for a few hours prob. Unless @Ganymede or @Arkandel have a chunk of free time before I do. Picking out posts is tedious and I am kind of buried under work for the next 3 hours+)

I sent Arkandel a message but if it's a humongous pain in your ass, don't bother. Since this game is in active development, my intention is to use this thread for the following purposes:

      • changelog updates, and
      • discussion on how the game ought to be run (I realize I turned a lot of people off by having speech codes which are too lax)

So what you may want to consider is:

      • Identifying a single split point (this is easiest for us, rather than trying to pick and choose separate posts).
      • Making a separate Game Dev board thread for the development discussion aspect.

These could perhaps be combined into one aspect. The split point could dovetail into the Game Dev discussion post as a creation point.

No, I'm not "too young to be tired all the time." I work long hours, raise three children, and go fuck yourself I'm tired.

I honestly hate any variation of the "too young for..." claim. I view it as selfish "but I wanna be the only one with something to fuss about" behavior.

No I'm not too young for knee/hip issues. In fact anyone who played a sport intensely as a teenager isn't too young for their body to break down by the time they're 30. In my case, sooner, because I had to have major knee surgery when I was 14 due to an injury.

But I'll make sure to tell the doctor next time we're discussing treatment for the severe arthritis in my hip that some rando said I'm too young to have it. That'll totally help.

@thenomain said in Video player extension?:

I am happy with no embedded videos, linked or otherwise, especially since a lot of browsers will auto-play if asked.

Links to the source material are good enough. Animated GIFs are bad enough.

A requirement IF this ever happened would be no auto-play. I've already got the chrome extension to disable auto-play because I hate that shit.
