Is Stranger Things 'edgelord emo dark'?

No, but Shadowhunters is, as is The Immortals and The Vampire Diaries.

I consider Strangers Things to be "80s horror." I hope that The Witcher is similarly a horror series. Netflix is good at putting out darker series that appeal to a certain audiences.

I think "edgelord emo dark" is going away, or being relegated to The CW.

I will give you that, but I'll also point to how I was excited about the new show (Sabrina) being on Netflix and specifically that Netflix was at the helm. Who have proven that, as you say, they can do dark without it becoming 'teenage emo for the same of rebelling' style. Which is the feel the CW shows I don't like have.

And, well, I mean, those shows do fit a niche. Teenagers need an outlet somewhere.

But I like dark and hard-hitting and we need that somewhere. BSG did good for sci-fi for that. The Expanse? I love dark sci-fi. Space is hard. Space is brutal. It's not all happy whee fun time. And so can the occult and supernatural. Netflix has done stellar keeping properly on the dark side without being 'teenager who just doesn't like mommy and daddy right now' ๐Ÿ˜‰

@deadculture I don't remember the details of the character trying it. Some noble. But it was right in the main, public area of the Temple. She was sitting in the pews praying, he sat next to her, and a pose or two later had a hand under her dress trying to... well, I'll leave it there, before I went scrambling.

      sigh

I'm pretty sure the noble privilege shit started during the Taleo era. Of course, trust Gold Dragon nobles to take it to fucking eleven.

As a person who PLAYED a gold dragon noble, I don't like being painted with broad strokes of a brush like that. Not every Gold Dragon noble was a skeezy fucker. In fact, it was kind of weird when I took the character how fast people /wanted/ me to take noble privilege with them and I was like... no. Am kinda glad my character ended up dying in war, never went back.

Heck it was Firan, maybe my denying people their rape RP was what got me killed.

      lol is this really #notallgolddragonnobles

It was also 'let me adjust my fedora and get all euphoric'

      @collective

You're avoiding the very clear, basic question.

Then make it a bit more clear for me, please, because I don't see where I've avoided answering anything.

Go back to @faraday's post and replace BSG cultures with your RL equivalent race of choice.

      Voila.

He'd try to force whores to TS him despite their OOC refusal, and at one point he had his character, I forget which it was, but it was a Sadin bastard, I think Andreas, hold a girl at swordpoint and abduct her, shoved her into a wardrobe, wherein he kept her inside and raped her repeatedly.

A lot of their religious pressure fell off the last time I let them take me to their church a handful of years ago.

As luck would have it, their Southern Baptist preacher decided his sermon that week was on SEXUAL SIN and of course his concept of SEXUAL SIN was homosexuality. And my parents went from pre-service and "oh we can't wait for you to meet him! We've told him how proud we are of you and and and..." (really? your daughter who works a full time job rather than 'raises a family' and is openly bisexual and lived in sin before marriage and...?) ....

I spent the whole service taking notes on every single passage in the bible that contradicted his entire sermon. My mother noticed.

We scurried right on out of there.

They have not pressured me on religion nor tried to get me to go to any church services with them since.

They know how I am. My father still opens his damn mouth sometimes.

I understand. Neither of my parents are narcissistic, but both are super conservative Christian and I spend a lot of time trying not to roll my eyes around them and showing them the acceptable parts of my life so we don't just fight for days. It's a problem. I hope it's not as bad as you fear it might be, and that you get to enjoy the visit through the anxiety.

It's difficult. Esp. in the current political climate. You don't want a fight, buuuuut.

When we don't clash, things are A-OK. Outside of religion/politics, I can get along with them alright, but as soon as either enter the stage... oof. So here's hoping.

@auspice Its not really a problem for me. It's just a trend that I've noticed and it confuses me as to why this is a trend.

It's kind of a shitty way to phrase it. 'edgelord emo dark'? Really?

Is Stranger Things 'edgelord emo dark'?

The Magicians, the SYFY show, was based on a book series. And no, it wasn't just 'edgelord emodark' (thanks for that, way to put down something just because it's not your cup of tea).

It's darker, yes. It's not 'happy fun magic tiems yaaaaaay!'

I like horror. I love horror. I'm thrilled that we may get a take on Sabrina that focuses more on the horror done by the network that did Stranger Things which made my horror-loving self very, very happy.

The article even says it's unknown whether it'll be in the same universe as the CW's Riverdale (which I haven't watched yet). Now I watch some CW shows. I enjoy the ones I watch, but I have a lot of issues with some of the tropes the CW loves to use (their whole 'NO MOAR LIES!!!!!1111' needs to die).

But it is definitely not an 'emo edgelord' trend unless it's just a thing you don't like and you want to poopoo on everyone else's fun by throwing everything you don't like into a single bucket. The Magicians show had its issues, I'll give it that, but it was based on a book series that was very intense, very brutal in places and the show did have some of that in ways that was very much not just 'emo.' The same goes for many other shows. And something horror/occult/etc. does not automagically make it so.

Is this even necessary? And what is it with all the new tv shows coming out having to be edgelord emo dark? I mean isn't this what the very premise of that SYFY show The Magicians was? Except it had more people?

The most recent version of the Sabrina comics released in 2014 is 'darker:'
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chilling_Adventures_of_Sabrina

This is the version they plan to use.

      I'm sorry that's a problem for you.

Netflix options Sabrina the Teenage Witch

      y'all.

      y'all.

      I didn't even know I needed this.

      Quote:
"The general description of what the show will focus on is this:

The new project reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemaryโ€™s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature โ€” half-witch, half-mortal โ€” while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit."

(From the new comic "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina")

My parents are coming to town next week. They are staying in my little one-bedroom apartment with me for a few days. ๐Ÿ˜

I am super anxious about this.

Oh. Oh dear. Good luck, and I mean that so sincerely. ๐Ÿ˜ž I get super anxious about my parents coming to stay for a few days even now, and I have plenty of room.

Mine have never stayed with me and my father can be a raging dick. He's, a) Mr. Right-Wing Christian Fundie, b) acts like the rules don't apply to him about anything, anywhere, and he's charming and narcissistic enough to get away with it (though the people around him aren't).

My mother is very sweet and I know she's very much looking forward to seeing me. And sometimes visits with them go smoothly, but I'm just very wound up already, though I'm trying so hard not to be.
