What makes a table-top system not good to use for a MUSH?

What Rook said. Also, personally, I think that too much complexity is a bad fit for a MU. I adore Shadowrun tabletop. Even if it were fully coded, I would absolutely dread playing that system on a MU. And usually it isn't, requiring entirely too much effort on the part of players and GMs. I know people use it, but I think it doesn't work so great.

Honestly, for as popular as nWoD is, sometimes it drives me insane as a MU*. I get so sick of having to reference websites/PDFs to remember all the different dice pools.

"Ok, for this power I have to roll This+That+Other+... and then I have this OTHER merit that adds..."

I will worship as a god the person that ever finds a way to streamline that shit.

I just want to thank Giordano, Kellan, Gerrit, and Sebastien on The 8th Sea for making last night one of the most enjoyable scenes I've ST'd in a long time.

I try really hard to craft a narrative and engage people in the sights, sounds, smells (rotting flesh, ha ha!), and the landscape around them. Horror is my favorite. These guys engaged not only with the story, but with each other. The bickering between the Englishman and the Italian was a highlight of the evening.

It was a joy to run for you guys. And for anyone on T8S who missed it? Don't worry. Tooth and Claw is far from over as a plot and there will be more after the holidays. I promise.

    • RE: RL things I love

I love notebooks. So much. I have an entire shelf full and it's not even all of them. Months ago, I backed some on Kickstarter. Nomad's Sea+Air+Space pack.

      Description from their site:
Our first premium 3-pack of Nomad Notebooks! The Sea+Air+Space pack is made up of three different all mixed up notebooks, with historical photos on the inside covers relating to the theme, as well as a map for each theme. The inside pages for each notebook are completely different!

It was inexpensive (even retail it's just $12 for all three; roughly the same as Moleskines). I got them today and oh man they're lovely.

      alt text

Photographed with my Kaweco Sport for size comparison and because, well, who doesn't love a Kaweco?

      alt text
This is the theme map for the Space one, obvs.

      alt text
Each one has a themed kraft paper, plain white, grid paper, and colored sheet. This is from the sea book. (BTW: the theme map for the sea one is the depth chart for the Chesapeake Bay)

      alt text
End cover photo for the Air one is the Tuskegee Airmen. Hella cool.

Okay. Done gushing. I just srsly love notebooks and I've been pretty excited to receive these for a while now.

    • RE: System dealbreakers

Something with 10 million different "moves." I don't mean options. I mean like:

"Okay so you have 3 actions per turn and those actions are divided into sub-actions and you can choose from these charts. You can either MOVE (select from Chart A, B, or C), ATTACK (Chart D, E, F), USE MAGIC (Chart G, H, I), USE ITEM..."

Some systems take this to worse extremes than others, but it becomes this system of micromanaging that just sucks all the fun out of a game for me. Thankfully, they rarely if ever translate to MU*, but that never seems to stop people from trying.

    • PBs You Haven't Had a Chance to Use

Has there been a PB you desperately want to use, but you've never had the opportunity?

I choose PBs based on the character. I have general parameters in mind (race, hair color, maybe eye color, etc etc.), but they have to fit a right look. I suppose similar to the "period face" thread. I always just know the PB is right when I see them.

Which means sometimes, an actor or actress languishes for a while before I get to use them. And others... others I never seem to get to use.

Like Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who is just so dang cute:

A more advanced weather system might be fun for the coder, but I doubt it would enhance gameplay.

I mean, it may be a pretty even split? I know on modern day games, a lot of people end up going to the regional Weather.com or Wunderground.com page to locate current weather, moon phase, etc. before starting RP. I do and I know a lot of other people who do as well.

Being able to just hit +weather/+time and have it on game, gleaned from the API from one of those sites? Would be amazing. Again, unfun to code (for older codebases, I imagine), but amazing.

      Hold on...

      ...

      ...

      https://github.com/thenomain/Mu--Support-Systems/tree/master/Weather

Much older than 2016, but that’s when I cleaned it up and added installation instructions. I want to say it was first designed for @Cobaltasaurus’s Dark Water, so around then. Should work on any Mushlike.

      Go for it!

What I was referencing was a complete fantasy weather system, creating its own biome. The above is one million times easier. Exactly one million.

See, the last few games I've been on (I haven't been in Staff roles and I don't like MUSH/MUX code, so maybe smoke was just being blown up my ass), I was told there was nothing but Keran's 'out there.'

@auspice Yeah. I love weather code. If I'm setting a scene, I like to use weather code to add atmosphere and flavor to it - I /like/ a scene that's randomly raining, or snowing, or beautifully sunny and swelteringly hot. It really does add to gameplay, at least for me.

I know it's in my list of asks when I join a scene already in progress. 'What's the setting? What are people dong? Time of day? What's the weather?'

Y'all, this is what is called a highland cat. Apparently a newer breed. This is my friend's kitten, Gigi. They recently adopted her after recovering from the loss of their older kitty. And not only is she, from what I hear, a precious cuddle monster, but she is just an adorable, masterful blepper:

if it's not demanding the spotlight because of the attention the addict needs and the trouble they tend to cause in the lives of the people around them

This isn't true of all addicts, either. It can often depend on the person and the stage of addiction. And the type of addiction. But I totally get where you're coming from.

For many it's set dressing. And that desire, too, for viewing it as a cheap flaw for extra XP.

      @lithium

I played a heroin addict on a game once. I made sure to be careful of who I played it around (since I know it can be triggering), but what surprised me more than people who it bothered (which I get)...

... was how lightly other people took it? Like to some it was this cutesy 'oh your character has the addict flaw? Mine does, too! To caffeine!'

      ....wat.

Yo, she's right. There's a politics board for a reason. Some of us do want a break from otherwise endless political rants. This is not mod-ask, but ask as someone else who does otherwise get no end to it. I just wanna bang on the proverbial drum somewhere for funsies.

Can we do that? Playtime here and y'all can go and scream about how we're terrible horrible people for wanting a slice of the web that isn't Politics Hour over in the politics board.
